Isn't our record with Dutch players pretty excellent? Stam, van Nistelrooy and van der Sar were all utterly brilliant bordering on legendary status, Blind has been good and well we've made a profit on Buttner. Partially offset by Cruyff.
Van Der Gouw and Muhren as well were okay signings all things considered.

Same Sky Sources that said we were signing Gundogan in April eh? :P

Amazing he cost less than 2m in 2008. I know we're all a bit sick of "potential" but it would be nice if one of our punts turned out so spectacularly well, just for once.

That was for a Championship club mind, and he did go on to play two years in League 1... so I imagine back then he probably wasn't considered to have such potential? I know what you mean though... I'd love another Ole or something.

They were a second division side back then though, it was significant amount for them.

This is why I dont believe the thinking along the lines of "and playing alongside Carrick or Vidic will bring them on no end"...it doesnt work like that. The good players come on better playing with dross than Cleverley and co did playing with gold. There's more examples of players coming from humble beginnings to shine than the Bojan's etc who grew up learning from the worlds best IMO.

Not sure what you mean but surely a player like Schneiderlin would have benefitted from playing in a better team than Southampton if that had been where he ended up?

The proviso being game time. I do agree that playing week in, week out, can bring players along massively. Which is a problem for youngsters at really big clubs. A problem that loans won't solve IMO, because they won't get the same treatment as a loanee that they would if they were an asset of the club they were playing for.

He was rated, but decided to join a 'small' club, because he wanted the insurance of playing time in a youth friendly environment.

He was. He had the choice of Premier League side Portsmouth but decided to go to Southampton instead as he'd have a better chance of development there. You could see his talent from a mile away although his career progression has been remarkable.

Would be a very good signing and go some way towards fixing our midfield.

If we can get this one done soon I think I'd feel pretty zen about the rest of the window.

probably he means good players will always turn out to be real good guys even he plays in far from a celeb team, while the mediocre guys no matter how they can give class teammates to learn from, they will be found out to be who they are

Not too excited, good PL player but not near world class. He's better than Blind tho and is still young so a decent signing.

To be fair, Carrick wasnt exactly world class either when initally signed, no ? Morgan has that athleticism and work rate that can prove vital for a title challenge. You need your hard workers, just ask Mourinho.

I will be gutted if we don't get him now, especially if he goes to Arsenal. I am more bothered about him than Schweinsteiger, although we could do with both.

This is definitely true. If you go back to the thread where Carrick signs for us back in 2006 about 70% of posts were bemoaning the signing, especially as it turned out to be our only key signing of the summer. Think that will be a big contrast to the Schneiderlin thread if he does join us
Ironically the better reception to Schneiderlin here is because we have been so successful with exactly the same type of signing (good age, good experience, ready to step up...) which is named Michael Carrick

I'm feeling very positive about the prospect of signing Schneiderlin. Reminds me of the deal to get Carrick in summer 2006: Understated, Premier league proven midfield who has the potential to grow in stature with the team. I'd be very pleased if we manage to buy him. Team building is about more than buying superstars, getting the right blend of players is also a big thing too.

Yeah I believe this. I dont believe playing alongside Scholes trumps a better talent. Simple as that.

You are absolutely right. However, you can say that about pretty much 99% of footballers who are supposed to world class. In fact only the Messi and Suarez of this world are relatively independent of the system around them. That is why we see regularly world class players failing after big transfers and people being all shocked about it.

Surely Mess I is extremely reliant upon a system being played around him. The whole Barca team has more or less been built around him. One of his criticisms is he doesn't turn up for Argentina.

The best thing about this post is that its over the last 3 seasons! Consistency of form in the prem. That alone should answer some of the few critics on here. A very good signing he would be. The painful years of having no decent midfield options seems a long time passed now!

Dont we have hard workers then? Valencia, Rooney, Young, Herrera work their ass of in offense and midfield frequently. Even though Blind has no athleticism, he's also a very hard working player. We need a player who can protect our defence, I think Schneiderlin can do that to a decent level, but dont forget he played alongside Wanyama in midfield, whereas here he would really be the only midfielder doing the job. But at the same time, we need a cdm who can raise the tempo, link up with the midfield, play long balls to skip certain stages in our attack, and Im not too impressed with Schneiderlin in these categories. Although he's still quite young and could certainly grow into that role.

He'd be a fantastic addition to our midfield, especially with Carrick nearing the end. You only need to look at the transformative impact Matic's signing made on the Chelsea midfield to see the potential value of a ball-winning all-rounder to a team.

Like LVG says its more about balance. A midfield 3 that together can do it all for me. Makelele would fall down if you judged him across a wide ranging skill set.

One of, if not the signing that I hope we make the most. Would absolute love Morgan here

He'll provide the defensive stability in midfield that we lack without Carrick.

A signing like him will enable the likes of Herrera, ADM and Rooney to concentrate on doing what they do best rather than covering unfamiliar positions due to a lack of options when Carrick is injured.

They are hard workers in their own respective position. LVG preferably wants every position covered and one can observe that whenever Carrick drops due to an injury we struggle to replace that specific position. Yes Valencia is a hard worker, but placing him on the dmv position would be asking for trouble, likewise for Rooney and Young, the players you mentioned. The team requires players in their natural positions to make the system blossom as effective as possible. Statistics showed that Schneiderlin contributed to the most interceptions plus tackles in the last three PL seasons. There is a reason why Koeman put his foot down when clubs came sniffing for him last season. He is not a Pogba or Busquets, im the first to admit that, but that is not necessary for a United team to challenge for the highest honour. He can prove healthy for the right balance when one is missing and clearly it is in regards to United.

The sooner this one is wrapped up, the better.

Along with many others on here, have always hoped he would be someone we'd be going for as he's been a class act since Southampton came up.

I hope it's actually on the cards.

Well we signed Pogba for less than 100k and now he is worth at least 60m...

you'll have to list the asset according to its Fair Value in the market after a while iirc.

No players are valued at depreciated cost in the accounts.

So after 5 years they are valued at nil.

If a new contract is signed during the initial contract they depreciated cost at that time is spread over the new contract term.
