He was the backbone of Koeman's Southampton. But, I have noticed that his defensive play is very reliant on a particular system. He needs others around him. Also, his attacking, in terms of his passing range, isn't the greatest.

He may become a great player with United. But, as of now, I think he's just above average.
You are absolutely right. However, you can say that about pretty much 99% of footballers who are supposed to world class. In fact only the Messi and Suarez of this world are relatively independent of the system around them. That is why we see regularly world class players failing after big transfers and people being all shocked about it.

People keep describing him as a defensive midfielder, I see more of a box-to-box player, no?

He can drive forward with the ball but I usually think of box to box CM's as having creative quality and a goal threat, he doesn't seem to have much of either. He's a solid passer, good athlete and strong defensively, great at winning the ball in particular.

Possibly. But, in no way is Schneiderlin a bit signing for United. So if he doesn't come good, there won't be a lot of frustration.

Di Maria on the other hand has to come good this season. And I think he will if he gets his due chances.

Mirror's David MacDonnell's also reporting it.

Ordinarily id say they are the two most unreliable papers for our transfer news, but with 2 years on his contract he is obviously going somewhere. Out of the apparent options we are by far the most attractive and likely to be interested.

Its on!

Have to say, it would be nice to bring in a Frenchman that Arsenal is also very interested in.

He is a box to box midfielder who is strong defensively. He has not really been the type to just sit in front of the defense but, maybe he can develop into that role.
LvG definitely looking for him to develop into a defensive midfielder if we buy him. I think Herrera is more of a box-to-box/attacking midfielder than him.

Will be an excellent signing if Woody can make it happen.

A passer from the midfield should be the next targert Hopefully, we are still interested in Gundogan.

Not only after transfers. Explains why players like Rooney and Valencia flourished under certain systems but are struggling now. Or vice versa with Ashley Young.

Plenty of sources are reporting this, there must be something to it. I'll be extremely excited if he's our second signing of the Summer, now we'd need to tie up Ramos or Otamendi and Fabinho and maybe, just maybe a good forward, and we'd be brilliant

That can be misleading - these days, once one hack reports something (in this case the Daily Star journo) others will parrot the information as their own.

Could it be the case that Rooney and Valencia suffered because CM and RB is not really their role? Also Valencia tend to come across as a one trick pony and that is kind of a problem considering that he's been in the EPL for quite some time. Regarding Young Id rather wait and see if he can emulate his form next season. As they say, form is temporary but class is permanent.

But I don't think Times or Telegraph will follow those journos and report as their own. Someone must have leaked the news.

Didn't Schneiderlin say his future will be resloved in a couple of days...

The whole Ramos saga is a smokescreen behind which we are gonna get actual realistic targets signed.

You've been here since 2001 and you still don't know United don't do 'smokescreens'?

They are learning, slowly. Usually they take their trousers down, turn around and invite.

He did say that only a day or two ago (I think he said within a week, before Southampton are due to get back together for pre-season training).

Thanks, I would expect this to be sorted by the end of the week whether he comes to us or elsewhere

He wouldn't be the best player out of those we're likely to sign this summer but may turn out to be the best transfer.

We've needed cover for Carricks position for years now and with Fletcher departing and the new systems deployed under LvG it's become even more vital.

Bookies have Arsenal down as favourites to land him....that was yesterday, hopefully I've missed some early morning developments.

What bookies? All the usual suspects have us favourites.

United favourites now.

We're 1/6, Arsenal 7/2. Last night we were 4/9 and Arsenal were 13/8. Lot of money has been thrown on us in the last few hours.

Bookies aren't some kind of special inside track, they're going off how many people are betting on it.

Paddy Power ran a segment saying that MS is close to Arsenal and Spurs according to the odds yesterday, mentioning United as an afterthought. That translates to 'bet on Arsenal and Spurs because he is going to United' to me.
