Ridiculous. Carrick has pretty much mastered the #6 role. 100% defensive discipline. Always in the right place, always cutting off the angles for the opposition to play through us. There's a reason why we look so bloody solid when he's in the side. Add to this superb composure and an excellent range of passing and you have a wonderfully effective player playing in the absolute perfect role for him.

FWIW I like Schneiderlinn and have been hoping we'd sign him for a couple of seasons now. He'd be a very good signing. But it would be a blatant lie to say he is more effective or influential than Carrick.

So has Schneiderlin.

Yeah because Carrick didn't train under LvG till October, and he showed why LvG missed him as soon as he returned

About your second point, how about you think from another angle, that the presence Carrick actually allows both two to be aggressively pushing and pressing with no fear of allowing space behind. That's actually a principle of defending, to condense space between the midfield and the defense. There needs to be someone behind the pressing midfielders to cover the lanes, win the loose ball and immediately transition to a new attack with precise passing. Otherwise there are two cases here: the central defenders have to push ridiculously high to defend, or there will be a large gap between the pressing guys and the defenders. This is not about who needs whom to perform, it's about a playing method, simple and clear. If you want to talk about a player who needs to rely on others to do the defending job, Andrea Pirlo should be the example, not Michael Carrick.

He doesnt win the loose balls though like you are suggesting. He barely recovers the ball at all, less than 2 interceptions a game and less tackles. Ander and Fellaini are doing the legwork effectively in front of him and we dont suffer too much because they are the ones winning the ball regularly.

And Pirlo is the perfect example because thats what Carrick has become, a lesser Pirlo who does need others to facilitate him but doesnt pass as well. And thats no shame, he's old now and like most old players he isnt doing what he used to do.

Tackles and interceptions are indicators of pressing for the first ball, there is currently no stats for collecting the loose ball. It will be an endless debate going on like that, which I already know from your past views over Carrick. I don't think I can say any clearer about Carrick's tactical role, so leave it there

Interceptions count recovering the loose ball

Not to derail the thread, but Carrick is a weird one in general. By which I mean that he's been here nearly ten years, which would qualify him for a testimonial match, yet how many people would actually turn up to it? Harsh question to ask, because there are few United players I've ever respected more, but I just feel that Carrick flies consistently under the radar. The sort of player who deserves to be remembered for a long time, yet due to his style of play, I have a feeling he'll be forgotten far quicker than he should be.

I guess he's off to Arsenal then. Think he'd be a great choice but we aren't even linked with him.

Many fans may not respect him highly enough (every time a new thread pops up about a potential hot midfielder, he shall always be the one to make way), but the fact is he's the third great guy of United PL-era midfield, no chance will he be forgotten easily by the clubs if not the fans. This is something which should not be discussed for now but this time next year, let's just temporarily ignore it.

BBC say he would be willing to leave .But only to a club in the CL and playing in the PL.

Can someone explain why Schneiderlin is not on the clubs radar?

He would honestly be my dream summer signing.

maybe I'm just being a fan but he would add so many things we've missed this year, and if he goes to Arsenal they would be right up there with Chelsea imo

He's Carrick in my opinion before he came to us. Would have some question marks but I'd be happy with it. If there's another world class one out there I cant think who, he seems prefect to replace Carrick in terms of doing what he does currently. Blind offers different skills. And potentially a world class CM i.e the best around at the moment could play alongside and offer something different again, but getting your hands on one is the difficult thing. Therefore signing someone who shows all the attributes and could grow into a top player in a top side ... why not?! UNLESS we are in for one of the bigger signings and best CMs about.

Arsenal would be quite formidable with Schneiderlin and a proper ST.

And a keeper and a centreback and maybee a left back
The good thing is we know Wenger will buy no more than one or two of the four or five they need... If he changes that habit then yeah they are serious contenders

Wenger has a habit of making strange decisions in the transfer market, passing up first option on Fabregas being an obvious example. Also, Song was available last summer and would of improved them immeasurably.

But Scheiderlin would be a major step in the right direction for them, would take their team up a level

you never know if he's on our radar, mate.. I imagine our "silent assassin" Edie is working behind the scenes pretty well, there were absolutely no suggestions that we should by Shaw, I mean there were some but it was purely speculation as we only had Evra who was leaving and no one else, so with common sense anybody would link us with him, Herrera deal was done pretty quick last summer too..

Maybe media doesn't rate Schneiderlin as high as others maybe the think van Gaal wants a different player, more ball playing, that's why they link us with Gundogan. I only know I'd love him too, he's exactly what we need, would be top of my list before any Bale, Ronaldo, new goalkeeper...

he would certainly be monster signing for Arsenal, if they sign him, defender and top striker they will certainly be title contenders next season, but knowing Wenger he will hesitate and Schneids will be snatched by some other team, hopefully us or Citeh

Just saw that he's only 25, big future still ahead of him. He's easily one if not the most consistent player in the league the past 3 years.

@m1y2

Hope your right, I have just become so used to the media circus around most of our signings. Would be brilliant if we blind side all the 'transfer experts' and sign him as the window opens

Clearly the current owners are getting every penny before they ditch the club. Massive problems for Southampton this coming season unless they get sorted out fast.
Havent you read about the huge cash bonus from tv rights in the Prem for clubs? Any club in the prem now is cash safe for at least 3 years now just from this year alone...

I would sign him just so Arsenal dont get him, he is exactly what they need and would also work wonderfully as a CDM/back up for Carrick for MUFC.

Would be a crying shame is Arsenal sign him, he's just what they need and obviously very much what we need. I honestly think if SAF was in charge he'd have signed him up by now.

If we want a CDM that will shield the back 4 and let ADM/Gundogan and Herrera do their thing then Schneiderlin would be perfect for us.

Yes because he had such a great record of signing central midfielders when we needed them.

I call it Makelele Syndrome. Florentino Perez produced this gem after Makelele had left Real Madrid:

"We will not miss Makélelé. His technique is average, he lacks the speed and skill to take the ball past opponents, and ninety percent of his distribution either goes backwards or sideways. He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makélelé to be forgotten."

I feel like Carrick is in the same mold in a lot of ways. He doesn't bring attention to himself on the pitch, because he's not flashy or doing anything outrageous with the ball. If you pay special attention to him his contribution is obvious, but it's much easier to look for the more eye-catching players like Di Maria, Herrera or Mata. Defensive midfield is a painfully under-appreciated position if you do it well. Running around like a maniac and making crazy tackles looks great, but if a player is smart, he'll do an even better job by intercepting play and cutting off passing lanes, but it will look as if he's just sort of... there, and not really exerting himself.

As crazy as it sounds, Arsenal didn't need Fabregas and Song wouldn't have been a massive improvement over any midfielder they had. Also, I don't think Wenger is obligated to take back any player who left the club willingly.

Exactly it's stuff like this which results in his under appreciation. A tackle or even interception are more obvious and so players who do both regularly will always receive more credit cause their contributions are evident upon first look. Positioning is incredibly difficult to appreciate fully whilst viewing live, which is why so much analysis is given to it after the match because of its importance.

Fabregas has been one of the best midfielders in the league this year, he definitely would of improved Arsenal. Song is more subjective, but combative box to box midfielders/holding mids are not exactly areas they are spoilt for choice in.

That post was from last summer when it looked like Southampton had sold everything but the kitchen sink

Why aren't we all over this signing? We are the team that needs him the most yet we look the least interested...

Schneiderlin or Gundogan? Because it looks like we have Schweinsteiger lined up and I can't see us getting 3. Is Schneiderlin that good to miss out on Gundogan.

"Yes, I think my decision is made," he revealed. "I learned a lot last season.

"The goal is to stay in England, it is a championship that I like and where I have a lot of fun.

"If I leave Southampton it is for a club that plays better than the Europa League. There are ongoing discussions, but nothing is done.

"But of course the Champions League is my goal. If I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League."

We may well be all over it. It does seem to be the way that there isn't a sniff in the press until 2-3 days before we complete the actual signing, so who knows

Agree with all that Stone, but i'd like to add - Carrick's a world-class passer, something Makelele could only dream of being. He didnt have to be though, he was best in the world in the role he did for Real & France.

It was unbelievable the way Makelele was treated at Real too. The hierarchy wouldnt acknowledge his importance to the success of the team, but i can guarantee you - the players most likely thought he was in their top 3 most important players at that time.

Many neutrals (i'm not really a neutral btw - f*ckin hate Real) would have him in their top 3 for sure, as i would too..

Derailing the thread again I think most people would now accept that Carrick is our most important outfield player. At least anybody who knows anything about football.
