Schweinsteiger is at an age where he's not a long term threat to certain young midfielders coming though the youth set up. I would like us to buy both but we have Pereira to consider and other young midfielders. I think LVG and the club are tempted by Schweinsteigers experience and personality. His winning mentality could rub off on these players. It's very difficult because we sign Schneiderlin and suddenly we've an awful lot of central midfielders even when playing 3 in midfield. Off the top of my head: Carrick, Schweinsteiger (perhaps), Schneiderlin (perhaps), Herrera, Mata, Fellaini, Blind, Di Maria. So I think we'll go on the tour and give some of these kids a chance and depending on how they handle it - we may then go for Schneiderlin. It's a risk but if you sign too many too soon, it can dishearten the kids who LVG will want to give chances too.

Di Maria and Mata are not CM's, they will both play in the front 3 due to their deficiencies in a midfield that needs to compete in the PL, they are the reason Rooney spent so much time in midfield last year. Then you factor in that Carrick is 34 and could well be in his last season and Blind looks better as a LB. Pereira is the only CM we have coming through that is even within touching distance of the first team, so I don't think Schneiderlin coming in would dishearten him with the age and injury situation regarding Schweinsteiger to also factor in.

Hopefully we'll still be in for him.

He's not going to play as a #6 for us anyways, he'd always of been playing as the #8. It'll be Bastian, Carrick or Blind as the #6, with Bastian also playing as a #8.

Schweinsteiger probably affects Blinds game time more than he would the hypothetical signing for Schneiderlein.

That's wishful thinking. Just can't help feeling that we could have him at any time here but we're stalling for a reason....hmmmm.

1 + 1 = 2.

Can't see us going for him if the Schweinstieger story is true, in all honesty. Hope I'm wrong.

Although we quite conceivable actually could we surely can't not sign him now Southampton have so candidly made our interest official?

Yeah I've lost a lot of confidence in us getting him. It's such a shame, I can see Arsenal coming in and snapping him up quite easily.

It really depends on if LVG is going to use Schweinsteiger as that much needed defensive midfielder he said he wanted a while ago.

Signing Bastian first could very well strengthen our negotiating position. Schneiderlin seems like he will push for Champions League football this summer irrespective of what we do, yet no club is going to give Southampton the significant outlay we could well end up paying.

We know that, Southampton know that, and the optimist in me thinks that Southampton would quite like to do business with us.

As a fan I absolutely want him, as a poster i'm terrified of having to spell Schweinsteiger AND Schneiderlin in my predicted line up...

Quite like this opinion. :)

All the delays and veiled media denials kind of resemble Shaw's transfer from last season where Southampton dragged their heals to extract the maximum out of his transfer value.

Koeman thinks the negotiations aren't over and we'll be back with more serious offer. There's really no more official outlets of news than him in Southampton. We should take his words more seriously than English journalists but they're also sure the negotiations aren't broken.

We're actually in the past opening bid phase. Another offer and he's ours.

He was always the more unlikely one, or better say Schweinsteiger was always our number 1 target midfielder this summer. If Schneiderlin is still on our list is another thing, obviously i hope like everyone that he is.

I think he must have been 2nd choice after Bastian. If we wanted him we would have signed him by now, because Monday we're off to the US.

If we sign them both I'm gonna go through the whole thread and ban everyone who moaned about one meaning we don't want the other.

With us not returning for him, and Schweinsteiger signing looking likely for a big fee for his age it seems we made a choice between the 2.

Carrick will probably retire (go for a big final contract in US/Qatar) in a year or two, Blind might be perma-shifted as Shaw's backup. I think that we can do with both Schweini and Schneidi (:nervous:). Pereira in a year or two can get Carrick/Blind's position.

LVG will want both. Not sure Schneiderlein will want to come now.
He will. He has made no effort to hide the fact he wants to play for a bigger club and in the CL. He would not refuse us, I'm sure.

He'll definitely come. The problem is, he could easily go to the other top 4 clubs. I'm surprised City aren't in for him at all, especially considering he's homegrown.

£13 million For Bastian is going to send a clear message to southampton, stop trying to haggle us and sell the player for what they are worth.

Schneiderlin knows Schweiny would only have a few years and I'm sure he'd love to play with him. Schweiny is for us what Xabi Alonso was for Bayern (though hopefully more successful). Schneiderlin would also likely play in the 8 role rather than the 6 role too.

LVG can certainly rotate 4 players like Carrick, Schweinsteiger, Herrera, and Schneiderlin in 2-3 positions. He's not played Fellaini much in CM and certainly looks like Rooney won't be going back there anymore. We certainly have room for Schneiderlin and I think that would give us a midfield that is great in quality and depth.

Well if reports are to be believed and we are close to bringing in Bastian, then we best pay close attention to the Schneiderlin links and hope they don't go cold.

It will be a big mistake to miss out on Schneiderlin even if we get Schweinsteiger.

We have to get him too, we need depth to go on all fronts. Imagine how great our midfield options would be plus he could learn a huge amount from Carrick and Bastien during the season.

Schweinsteiger is different profile to Schneiderlin. Hope we make a bid now and we might have a better position now because we will not be desperate for a midfielder anymore.

If we get both Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger we will have probably the best midfield in the league.
