Maciej Jagieła: How often does a promising young goalkeeper from Poland receive an invitation for a trial at a foreign club?
Kacper Chorążka: A lot depends on whether you play for the national youth team. In this case it is much easier to receive offers from foreign clubs, because their scouts often attend international matches. After my debuts in U-15 and later in U-16 teams, we’ve got invitations for trials from a handful of clubs. With my parents and my agent, we rejected most of them, so I don’t have to catch up with school, but also trainings and games at Wisła Kraków. I went for a trial only in a few cases.
When and how did you get the information that Manchester United would like to test you?
Manchester United expressed their interest at the beginning of March and next month we received the official paper invitation for a trial.
How did Manchester United organise the trial for you? What did they do and what were you supposed to do before coming to Manchester?
The organization of the trial by Manchester United was impeccable and I cannot have any objections. I had everything secured and the only thing I was supposed to take care of was my form.
When exactly did you arrive in Manchester, when did you start training and when did you come back to Poland?
Together with Michał Kołakowski from Kołakowski Football Management, I arrived in Manchester on 11th of May. I trained for five days, ending the trial with a game for the Reserves (U-21) and I kept a clean sheet.
What is your impression after the trial at Manchester United?
Very positive. I was surprised at the extraordinary family atmosphere there and very pleasant relations. I could feel it from everyone – the club drivers, cooks and also first team coaches. Everyone showed a very friendly attitude towards me and, since the beginning, they treated me as one of their own, and that was very helpful for the quick assimilation.
Could you describe the trail from your own perspective?
I trained with the Reserves (U-21) and I have to admit that the quality and pace of the game shown by some of the boys proved why they are in this club and not somewhere else. What I noticed, also in my previous trials, is that all the players are very confident and convinced of their own quality, and that they all work hard every day. They do it, because one day a manager may enter the dressing room, point at one of them and say „today, you train with the first team”. That’s how it was with Marcus Rashford who is the latest star of English football.
Did you have any contact with the First Team players or with any other famous people from the club?
On my first day at United, I sat in the dressing room with Rashford and I trained with Sam Johnstone and Dean Henderson. However, the biggest experience for me was playing together in a training session with Marouane Fellaini and Morgan Schneiderlin who were coming back after injuries. Actually, I had a chance to meet all the senior players, with Mata, Rooney, Memphis and the rest, and the game I played in was watched by Louis van Gaal, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, who is the head of coaching at the Academy.
Should we expect that you’ll be a player of the Manchester United Academy?
In the opinion of the coaches I did really well and the coaching staff was happy with my trial. I also know the club is still interested in the transfer. Obviously, both clubs would have to make an agreement. I came back to Kraków and now I focus on Wisła Kraków and nothing else.
What did the coaches tell you?
As I have already said, they were satisfied. I was particularly happy with the fact that the coaches appreciated my technical abilities and decision-making effectiveness. I still have to work on a few things, though. At the end, I received many gifts and the shirt I wore while playing the game for the Reserves.
Do you think it’s better to stay in Wisła Kraków or, like Wojciech Szczęsny or Grzegorz Krychowiak, learn a different approach to football as soon as possible?
I think that there is no one answer for this question that would guarantee a young footballer success. You can achieve it in your own country, but also abroad. Wojciech Szczęsny is Arsenal’s home-grown player, but most players left as finished products like, for example, Robert Lewandowski. The development in football depends on various things and when it comes to goalkeepers, the goalkeeping coaches are very important. At Wisła, I work with an amazing coach, Artur Łaciak. Thanks to him I am where I am right now. If there is a transfer to a foreign club there is no doubt that it will be a new challenge for me, but the goal will be the same – education and stable development.
Under the picture of you and Michał Kołakowski before your trial there were a lot of comments saying that you’re psychically ready to leave Poland. What would you say?
I also think I’m psychically ready. I was in a few English clubs and I know what it is all about. I’m not afraid of any transfer to a foreign club and I’m sure that I would do well. Obviously, I realise that there would be difficulties to overcome while living abroad and that I would have to show strong character, but no worries. I’m a Wisła Kraków player (smile).
Fast forward three years, where do you see yourself?
I see myself as a well-behaved boy playing on a high level who is not referred to only as a player who was once a talent. I have pictured a certain way of my own development which I try to realise. My dream is obviously to make a debut in Wisła Kraków’s First Team and then help the club to get to the dream group stage of Champions League. This plan, given where I am right now, seems crazy, but nobody will forbid me from dreaming (smile).
Thanks for the talk. What can I wish you for the future?
Good health and a lot of happiness, because they are important not only in football, but also in life. The rest is in my hands, because only by working hard I can be successful. Thanks for the talk and greetings to all Manchester United fans.
