Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

@khoazany @jb8521 Wide spread reports that Domingos Quina has walked out on Chelsea. Do you think we would risk upsetting Chelsea by taking him? I know we tried to bid for him in January. Any chance he comes here?

It's not like they never approached our youth transfer targets/own players before...They tried to sign Kenji Gorre (our former youth player) when he was 13/14.They hijacked the deal for Familia-Castillo and some others.

As usual these kind of stories are usually leaked by the camp of the player so I wouldn't put my money on it.It's different from Chong whom we shown our interest for a long time and he himself has been over to Carrington on couple of occasions.

But if he isn't training with them any longer, then surely he's not staying.

It might be telling that there are such widespread reports about it when we normally do our business quietly at youth level. It seems his agent is trying to build up the hype around him to get the best deal. I haven't heard anything apart from the press reports but I hope we are in for him because he's very talented

When it comes to Chelsea and younsters, I don't think we should worry too much about upsetting them. We can always argue that at least he will get a chance here

We should go all out for him, but we aren't usually good at these type of high profile youth transfers. Especially domestic.

Not sure I agree with that. We've nabbed a few from under rival noses over the years, and won some battles over hot prospects. The difference with the domestic kids is that the ones who get away from one club tend not to amount to much - if an English club really wants to keep an English kid, they generally can, so the high-profile poached ones tend not to be the best talents. See Veseli etc. Whereas recently we've done well at nabbing top foreign youngsters when the likes of Chelsea, City, PSG, Barca, Bayern etc have been interested: Fosu-Mensah, Januzaj and Pereira all fall into that category to some extent. They're more noticeable than the domestic kids because they actually tend to live up to the hype.

I was talking about higher profile kids domestically who have interest from all other top academies. To give examples of recent moves Dan Crowley's, Patrick roberts etc..

Anyway, it's also harsh to say they amount to nothing. We were Keen on Sterling in his QPR days and he was said to be a United fan as well, but Liverpool beat us to him. Actually they beat us reportedly for Ibe too and Arsenal did for a few as well.

Then there's likes of Delle Alli more recently though that was more of a first team transfer but still he amounted to something..

What's the last hostile or high profile acquisition we did at all at youth level domestically at scholarship or first contract stage? We tend to avoid those kinds while likes of Spuds, Chelsea, Liverpool and especially arsenal tend to do better.

Nick Powell, Regan Poole, Tyler Reid and Matty Willock both used to play for Arsenal. I'm sure other clubs were making offers for Goss before we got him. You've listed 2 players who have done anything, hardly missing out on much. We have kept hold of all our top domestic talent which is constantly trying to be poached as well and they are just as good as the so called higher profile kids.

Goes without saying that they topped the group yesterday with 3 wins.Today they beat Alcorcon 2-0.Will play Alboraya UD in the quarter final.

I didn't say that. I said that poached domestic youngsters tend to live up to the 'ooh, United stole a City player' hype less than poached/contested foreign kids, because the best domestic kids rarely get poached because PL academies tend to be able to keep hold of the ones they really rate.

As for examples of British kids United have won recently, limerickcitykid's given a few good examples there. Most of your examples of us losing out don't stand up to any scrutiny, either: we were interested in Sterling but never actually tried to get him. The Ibe thing was just a rumour. And as you say, Dele Alli was a senior signing - he went from the Dons first team straight into the Spurs first team.

These things don't actually happen that much, but we give at least as good as we get. Patrick Roberts is pretty much the only example of a genuinely special domestic youth player changing clubs who we might have liked to get but didn't. Then again, unlike City we tend to think about whether a player will actually get opportunities with us, and we already have gifted attacking midfielders and wingers of our own who are having to wait for chances because there are lots of senior players in those positions. Think Pereira, Januzaj, Harrop etc.

The under 14s are through to tomorrows final of the Copa Mallorca. Under 12s lost in the quarter finals of the MIC tournament. Barcelona beat Real Madrid in the final

Seriously, I coach an u6 side in East Sussex and a drive to East Bourne is a treck but the kids get excited.

When I played in Holland I got excited when we drove to other counties for matches.

I was 12 when I did that, imagine what's going through these kids' minds when they fly abroad to play in an international tournament.

So so jealous

Lost 0-1 against the host Mallorca in the final.Anthony Elanga won Player of the Tournament and coach Hasney Aljofree also won coach of the tournament 2nd time in a row.

George Dorrington and Oliver Rathbone have been released. Oliver Byrne has signed a 3 year pro deal at Cardiff

Never rated Dorrington too highly and I thought as much with Rathbone after he played against Blackpool a little while back and then disappeared again, could see him forging a good career for himself though. Happy for Byrne as I think he's a very good keeper and I'd expect to see him work his way into the Premiership years down the line.

With the number of attacking players in the U18s next season wouldn't be surprised if we promote one or two to the U21s so hard to see Rathbone plays regardless. He generally below the pecking order than both Gribbin and Dearnley.Surprise that Doughty hasn't been released considering he hasn't been played even when we have zero striker left in the U21s (he's not one but used to play there).

Does anyone else just not care about keepers? I just zero expectation that one of them will ever make it, it is incredibly hard for a keeper to breakthrough at a top club.

Are either of Rathbone or Doughty injured? They haven't appeared in anything all season. Doughty must have played out of his skin on trial or something because it odd to sign a kid all the way from America and then he never plays in anything. Being Canadian, I hoped he'd be decent but it doesn't look like he is good enough to ever even make the national team.

How has Gribbin been this season? Seemed to drift through the limited games I have watched but I could have just caught him on his bad days. Was hoping he'd have kicked on and got the odd u21 appearance though. Maybe we'll see him yet after we wrap up the title.

Agree about the keepers and I actually don't really care who play at U21s level as well.Seems everyone can do a good job at that level, even the less rated like O'Hara.

Gribbin's been injured and will be out for the rest of this season.

Wasn't Pereira a little highly rated among the Goalkeepers ? And what about that Savic fella we signed last year. What's he been upto ?

Joel? Yeah he is rated highly enough I suppose, he'll never play for us though just like Sam Johnstone. Milinkovic-Savic was fecked off after he couldn't get a work permit, with some Polish club now, Lechia Gdansk or something.

Yeah, that's true. United always buy top keepers. But we usually do identify young talent and sell them for a bit of profit I suppose. Foster, Zieler to name a few. I really liked Zieler though. Isn't he one of the top keepers in the Bundesliga now ?

He will go down with Hannover. Zieler is the only player which is good enough and playing a good season for Hannover but he's not up there with the best keepers nevertheless solid. The level on this position is really high in the Bundesliga.

Something is very wrong with the press these days.Every big academy has some whizkids who are monitored by other big clubs.Looks like City doesn't give a sh*t about child protection putting McAtee's name out there who's late 2002 born so only 13.

What makes it worse is the timing. 'United have just won the u21s again, time for a press release on how great our academy is'. Using a 13 year old kid to big themselves up as well!

It is almost as sad as them paying random Hollywood stars to come to a game and then inviting the press to come and photograph it all.

No idea why he needed a work permit, surely the fact that he was born in Spain meant he's free to work in Europe?

How many youngsters have Guardiola promoted at Bayern?

Why do they call Kelechi a youth product. He as 18 when he joined.
