Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

Has joined the Mourinho school of thinking by correcting a reporter asking about the fact he's only won one trophy.
He wouldn’t even have qualified for one of those two matches if City didn’t sweep up.

Scraping the barrel. To be fair though to have won the shield means he’d have to of won the league or FA cup. Hasn’t he only won the FA cup? But wasn’t that the season he took over.

Very dislikeable guy, there's passion and then there's being a self entitled, dramatic tit on the touchline. Really hope he continues to fail at Arsenal.

Urge the cringe was strong with that response.

The smug grin after he delivered it was something else...dear ow dear the double runners up and double charity friendly winners! get the tour bus out ffs.

Were they linked to any strikers in the Summer? They had such an odd transfer window. Only signings they made were in their two strongest areas.

He won it after his FA Cup win and then again after we were runners up in the league.

Charity Shield
When managers opt for such comments , it never ends well. We have seen with Jose and even ETH. Arteta may not show it but the pressure is on him to win something. With the amount of backing he has received he should be doing better.

Think in other countries the Super Cups are taken more serious,.so its sort of understandable a foreign manager sees it so. Watched some of the Milan 125 years celebrations the other day and they were being ex players on to the pitch with trophies and a light show and went through their honours list and their 7 Supercoopa Italiana's were mentioned in among the European Cups and Scudettos etc.

Yeah but I think the year city won the treble, they were runners up in the league, allowing them to compete in the CS again.

Arteta just tried to get the focus away from his team s recent performances and took it on him by said CS as a trophy. Well done arteta.

The man has been in the English game for about 20 years, he's fully aware that it's considered a tiny step up from a pre season friendly.

Emery wasnt given Torriera & Pepe ,Leno. He chose to sign them. Ir was Arteta who chose to sign Odegaard, Rice and Raya.

You cant gaslight Arsenal fans on Emery. He was an unmitigated disaster for us. Player power at Arsenal was something else. Players used to turn up late to training ect and nothing would happen. Emery was a door mat
[/QUOTE]

I will give credit to Arteta on Odegaard and Raya . But Rice was an obvious signing every team in the league wanted him. Sorry I am mistaken on David Luiz and Pepe thought they were signed in Wengers last few years. You watch the team more than me. But I think Emery is a top manager. Arteta to me is a little overrated. Give more money than previous Arsenal managers. Think he should of won more by now. You’re the 3rd biggest club in England

Trouble in paradise. Lee's transformation into Claude is nearly complete.

Why are there always lot of Arsenal fans looking at the camera behind the one who talks? Seen this every time. Is this some "oh look, I'm on tv now" moments.

He is correct. However, I'm surprised he didn't mention all those pre-season tournaments trophies.

To be fair, if a club puts it on their official honours list on their website, can't blame any manager of said club that's won it for claiming it.
You're reaaaaally going out of your way to try to justify a pathetic point. As someone pointed out, he's been in England for about 2 decades now, he knows exactly how the Charity Shield is viewed.

Don't blame me mate, blame the club's for putting them in honour rolls and celebrating the victories, and blame the managers like Pep who see it as a trophy as well.

As Klopp said, if it doesn't mean anything, why play it?!

Official rules dont even apply for the game.

6 subs. red card doesnt matter. Its a friendly game.

What an odd hill to die on.

I mean, don't worry mate, it's not keeping me up at night. I just think it's a fairly normal question, if a club views it as a honour, should a manager see it as an honour? How do you disengage one from the other?

Those mental gymnastics will definitely keep you in shape, I'll give you that.

Nobody gives a feck about the charity shield. To imply it's the same as the fa cup or another real trophy is pathetic.

We all cringed when Mourinho did it. You should too.

Who cares what a club tries to claim, it’s a friendly match.

Oh, it was definitely cringe when Arteta said it too, thought I'd throw in some alternate views to stoke some discussion.

In all seriousness though, why is it viewed differently in England than say Spain, Germany, Italy etc? Is it to do with the historic name of Charity Shield? If it was rebranded as the English Super Cup would it have a bit more prestige?

Last time I checked, the charity shield was not a trophy recognised by UEFA or even as a competitive game by the FA.

It's literally a friendly game played for charity. Might as well point out that they also won the Emirates Cup in pre-season for the past three years.

Can't even call it the charity shield because charities need to disclose the percentage given and the FA won't release those details.

I’ve always wondered this. Not only do clubs count Super Cups, but players do too. All ‘most decorated player’ lists include Super Cups in the totals.

I’m with Klopp, if it doesn’t matter, why play it? Time with the squad ahead of the league campaign is precious.

A team could win absolutely nothing and end up in the charity shield by virtue of finishing 2nd to the team that won the double. The actual rules in the games are different from the rules in games that actually matter.

I doubt even Arteta believes it to be anything more than a friendly. From the clip above, it sounded more like he was joking with the journalist.

You’re right, there. Although, last I checked, you don’t have to have won anything in the previous season to win the League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League or Champions League.

I also agree that Arteta was probably joking.

No issues with anything you’ve said, but it didn’t really have much relevance to the my post that you replied to.
