Mikel Arteta | Lego Pep watch

The reason for me I always had a hard time rating him is beyond results. Wins and losses are important but one can look beyond that if you have your side set to play dominant football but with arteta he has his side play such a boring football that one has to wonder what is he good at. Today in first half Newcastle had 71% possession during the 42nd minute mark. That should be unacceptable in such a important game.

I always feel he is a privileged coach , to be managing one of the biggest clubs in England (yes Arsenal are big) but yet there is no accountability. It's like finishing 5th is fine, finishing 8th is fine, getting Ko'd by Nottingham is fine, losing to spurs 3-0 is fine. His biggest achievement at Arsenal is to convince everyone that they are a shit side and whatever he does is amazing. And to add that giving him a new contact is icing on cake (for rival fans).
In fairness I think English club fans in general lack standards and have a habit of accepting and defending a lot of shit.

It usually boils down to whether the owner is a parasite and exploits that.

Thing is - finishing 5th (if they finish 5th) and getting 69 points (if they beat Everton) which is 8 more than last season (with worse GD than last season though) is an improvement. But when you have it all in your hands with 2 games to go than it's a different story. Plus the fact they only played league games most of the time this season, Tottenham starting their season in November and United being terrible... Who knows if Arsenal will even(or Spurs and United either) have a chance of finishing in top 4 in years to come...

I won't agree. Chelsea fans always criticize their manager, United fans were split on Ole from day one to the fact even when he finished 2nd people wanted him gone. I am pretty sure City and Liverpool fans having tasted success in recent times won't tolerate finishing 8th. Heck even spurs fans had enough of Nuno at the start of the season. Arteta seems to have some sort of privilege both from fans and from board.

You should have seen the Shed End forum at the end of Frank's tenure. About four fans openly admitted to being Lampard out and were made pariahs. AVB had a lot of backing aswell. Torres also got his name chanted regularly.

Ole got some stick but similarly got it bloody easy compared to what he would have got at a similarly sized club to yours to which there's only one other. Legend or not Madrid fans would have chased him out of the city with a machine gun if Barca and Leti were sweeping it all up between them under his watch.

Liverpool fans were quite defensive over Kenny and Brendan even when things started snowballing.

It’s an improvement on his own shit on a stick season. It’s still yet to improve on the manager he replaced.
All that time and money and he can’t even muster up a points total to match Emery.
He’s utterly wank.

Ohh that I agree, managing Barca or Madrid is a different level beast. Hey at least Ole and Lampard and Kenny were actual club legends and former two at the very least got them to CL football. Arteta I just don't get it.

Because the likes of "tactico" analysis accounts whatever they call keep pushing propaganda like this.

I know this is primarily a thread to make fun of Mikel, but what in God's name is this. Pep does not "always" get to finals, he's only made it to semis with City twice!

As a Manchester United fan, I gotta say that in hindsight having a bad season was probably benefical as we sacked Ole and have got Erik Ten Hag next season as manager who is way better than Mikel Artera who is shite. Arsenal have blown their best chance to get back into the champions league places in the premier league as I can't see them breaking into the top four with Pep at Manchester City, Ten Hag at Manchester United, Conte at Tottenham, Tuchel at Chelsea and Klopp at Liverpool.

They gave him a new contract

Bang average manager who's taken Arsenal as far as he can.

Arteta has one thing he's world class at, PR in the media. No doubt Henry Winter will do a column by end of the week saying Arsenal were no course for relegation before he took over or something completely wrong.

I dunno if his ceiling is higher as manager, but he has done pretty well to assemble a young squad. They are 8 pts more than us. What can i say? Ralf is so poor!

@pocco waiting for you to appear to tell me how Arsenal and Arteta are on the right path and much further ahead than United and developing a style and culture and all that other rubbish you said a while ago…

As I said. It’s a carbon copy of United under Ole but not as good. One step forward two back.

Spending the amount of money he does, it's not too difficult to assemble a young squad. The question remains whether it's a good squad going forward when teams around them having normal season.

It looks to me is the same kind of hype job like Ole's squad building ability. Just need to upgrade this and that positions all the time. In reality, the system is unproven and unwarranted for the previous investment and any further investment.

Ole and Arteta have shown us that there is a limit to a coach's ability to raise the level of a club. Arteta looks about done. I hope Arsenal sticks by him. "Stand by your man."

I read some stat as Arteta lost 32% of matches compared to Ole 24%. And big sam has 36% ..

Imagine his hype with such statistics.

Arteta after the Newcastle match.

"I am allowed to give my interpretation of what I thought, but I do not like to lie. I cannot say what I think, I will be canned.
I am so proud of my players, ask the referee to come here and explain his decisions. That's his decision, such a beautiful game was destroyed here."

Unless he's a short-circuiting android and said the exact same shite twice (possible), that's what he said after getting bummed by Spurs.

Wonder how long they'll insist with him, not too many distinguished coaches out there either.

I'm not writing Arteta off yet. It has been a colossal turn of fortunes for Arsenal, but when on song, they do play decently.

Having said that, I'm confident we will finish above Arsenal next season if we get our transfers right.

This doesn't surprise me. There are managers who seem to get by and make enough incremental improvements to keep enough of the fan base on their side, but don't actually have the proper quality needed to achieve excellence. Arteta has always struck me as one of those. He's spent a lot at Arsenal yet is somehow shielded heavily by their lowered expectations to the point where his own improvement from rubbish to okay is seen as progress.

He also seems to have a real chip on his shoulder, and also manufactured hype as a proper tactician (due to the Pep connect) which can annoy people.

For me I saw nothing in his first two years that showed him to be a high quality manager. Football was poor and unattractive as were the results. They've been a little better due to the spending but for me, this is not a manager in line with Arsenal's stature of a club.

Finally hopefully they stop bleating on about CL after 6 years. He has managed them for 3 now.

Just to highlight what I'm saying, would you guys pick Arteta over Eddie Howe?

Arsenal fans shouldn't be asking has he improved us from 8th (his own achievement). They should be asking whether they have one of the best 6 managers in the PL.

They probably should have just stuck with emery for a little while more.

The media is pushing Viera, it’s madness. And probably a fair chunk of Arsenal fans agree, I’ve seen those sentiments online from them this season. Meanwhile, someone like Potter is there just needing that big break who could give them a real identity, but Lego Pep is what they persist with.

It'll take some time for results to start paying off, just like with any transition. IMHO, they are already in the right track and are far ahead of us in the scale of stability, plus they've shown signs they can work as a group and play pretty attractive football, even without dominating characters. The issue was expectations management for the current year, where everyone expected them to get into the champions league. Truth is, 5th is a major achievement for them.

Did he always speak like this or is he consciously trying to imitate pep's mannerisms?

No-one expected them to get into the CL though. It was an opportunity that arose because United fell off a cliff and Tottenham were utter dogshit until Conte arrived. It was an opportunity that they have utterly fecked up and I’d be amazed if they get another chance at the CL whilst Conte is at Spurs and due to United’s financial power.

When 6th place looks like to finish below 60 points, don’t try convincing anyone that 5th is any kind of achievement, let alone a “major achievement”.

Arteta took over a side that took 70 points in Emery’s only season, in 3 years he’s spent a shit tonne of cash and will at best end the season on 69 points. Right track my arse.

United also showed under Ole that they could work as a group and play pretty attractive football, but as with Arteta, every man and his dog can see it meant nothing, and was going absolutely nowhere, just like Arsenal under Arteta.
