Miguel Veloso

I don't mind buying him along with a striker, but a striker should be our top priority if we are going to buy anytime soon.

Silvestre - possible

O'Shea - nah

Fletcher - slightly possible but I don't want him to leave. Descent backup.

O'Shea is close to signing a new contract so doubt' he's leaving.

I hope this is bollocks. No matter how good a player Veloso is the central midfield is our strongest area and 10 million for a back up for Evra is very, very expensive.

I think Silvestre will be booted out in the sommer, which means we surely are in need of a new left back. But I prefer a more natural left back than Veloso. And a cheaper one.

I don't think Veloso would be coming in just as back up for Evra though. It says in the article that he is predominantly a holding midfielder. The future doesn't look too rosy for Fletcher if this is true.

Indeed.

It will be propably another homework for Queiroz, while Sir Alex should decide who reinforce attacking formation.

I think we will sign him as a midfielder as well, but I really can't see any sense in bringing in another midfielder. We can't keep all of them happy if Scholes plays to 2010.

From the top of my head:

Scholes - getting on a bit. Still class, but won't be around forever.
Carrick - bought for £18 million and is at a good age. He'll be sticking around.
Hargreaves - see Carrick. Although SAF has indicated he is more a Champions League player and fitness issues mean that he could be used sparingly.
Fletcher - has struggled to make an impact this season and could be on his way.
Anderson - bought for the future.
Park - a fringe player who, when he returns from injury, will be happy with his role.
Ronaldo - first name on teamsheet.
Giggs - see Scholes.
Nani - see Anderson.
Eagles - no future at the club.
Martin - ditto.

On this basis, we have a core of 6 midfielders who will conceivably be at the top of their game next season. What sort of form Scholes and Giggs produce will have to be gauged at the time. I suppose it makes sense to get a player like Veloso in the squad instead of Fletcher because he is so adaptable and can cover three positions in the squad.

We should also be wary of saying, "another midfielder" because we all said the same sort of thing when SAF bought Evra and Vidic but they have all of a sudden become stalwarts in the backline. The composition of the squad can change in a flash - players get older, get sold etc and all of a sudden a Veloso (or anyone for that matter) shoot to prominence.

Struggled? How many games did he get? There is no point in buying veloso when we have fletcher. We spent too much recently and any more signings will put extra burden on the fans next season. We need to give our youth a chance.

If they (Carlos and Fergie) think Veloso can make the same impact as Vidic or Evra, then we should sign him straigt away of course. However it would surely mean bye bye to Carrick. I can't imagine him being happy with a sub role in the long term.

I prefer we keep the midfield as it is. When Scholes quits we'll have Hargreaves, Carrick and Anderson to fill the two spaces and unless Hargreaves goes off injured every other week that should be enough with maybe Fletcher filling in as fourth choice if he's still happy with a part time role in two years time.

Not in terms of performance, but actually getting in the team.

If this rumour its true the only one i can see leaving is Fletcher

Its better if we keep the midfield as it is and just add what we need that is a striker

I suspect that we'll not be going for Veloso. With O'Shea's new contract I'd think that we'll leave Veloso alone for a while. We don't even need him, as he's primarily a central midfielder

As Danish Voice said if we were looking for backup for Evra we'd go for someone that's an established left back

Majority of our players are still British unlike at those clubs.

True but if you count Brazilians we're starting to look a bit portugese:

Ronaldo
Nani
Quieroz
(Any more of the staff ? can't be arsed to check)
Rafael
Fabio
Veloso?

And thats not mentioning Kaka, Ronaldinho, and Eusebio

looks like it could possibly happen alright. He has impressed when i was watching Portugal under-21's etc, looked the part. Can't believe Ferguson is buying another centre mid, but he has been scouted i'd say etc, sounds more plausable than most rumours, how-and-ever.

Should be a decent right back, maybe he's gonna get games there in the short run. Monitor the situ i guess, still seems a bit strange, we blatantly don't need any more midfielders, in terms of either quality and quantity.

i would welcome veloso.. he's a good player and i assure you he'll fit right in. i know we don't really need him as we're stacked in midfield, and yes he's another portuguese, but we still have a british backbone.. every great club team has had at some point a team full of foreigners of a particular country anyway so it's not that big of a deal..

and portugal, imo, is THE team of the future.. they have so many awesome young players that will dominate world football within the next decade.. just be happy that we've got the good young ones in cristiano, nani, veloso.

also, we are a very injury-prone team.. just look at last season's mess towards the end.. veloso is an upgrade of o'shea in that he's versatile and can cover multiple positions, but im pretty sure he'll be much better... and he will play throughout the season filling in for the injured or suspended.

he wants to come here so sign him up SAF!

Veloso can join United in summer, I think... striker is priority for January.

As choiboyx012 said, Portugal is the team for the future. Can't disagree with that.

Veloso & Moutinho are very wanted players in Europe. If United could sign Veloso it would be a great move, IMO... The guy can defend and shoot from distance with power. He got the right physique to play in Premiership.

Chasing after Veloso seems strange on the surface, but it reminds me of when we signed Evra when we already had Heinze. Clearly, Fergie knew of goings on which we did not and did not pass up the oppurtunity to sign a class player.

Veloso's agent was talking to SSN earlier and said that United have shown interest and a move in the summer is a strong possibilty

Is he like Hargreaves at DM? I mean is he as limited as Hargreaves?

From what i've seen of him he looks like a very technical player. Great passing, i'm actually sprised to hear he plays as a defender because i've only seen him in midfield and he seems to be the creative type of player and not so much defensive.

Arsenal aim to beat Man Utd for £20M Veloso

Arsenal are planning a major bid for Sporting Lisbon midfield ace Miguel Veloso.

While Manchester United are following the Portugal international, O Jogo says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is prepared to offer £20 million in January for the youngster.

United have a close relationship with Sporting, but if they want to land Veloso, they will have to match Arsenal's bid when the market reopens.

£20m ? Madness.

City will splash £40 mill and use him as backup.

veloso will be one of the stars of Euro 2008, you heard it here first

If he's that good and if he is a technically gifted DM as DanNistelrooy says then it would be good to buy him. However, this saddens me as our British core will shrink even more... Fletcher will have no place in the team. Scholes will have a starting place in the team for quite some time and Anderson is a great player. Carrick is an excellent midfielder but will he have a place in this very portuguese-speaking United? Come on England, produce an excellent midfielder for us to have in our future starting 11!!!

With only 4 outfield players on the bench, players that provide options are very useful, and Velosa could cover LB as has been said. He could probably play LM if needed.

To be playing CM at his age for a very technical Portugal team is a good indication of his ability.

He looks a good all-round midfielder to me.

Apparently Carlos admitted 'interest' .... on SSN a while ago :shrugs:

Queiroz - Veloso not a priority
But United assistant confirms midfielder is on the list

Carlos Queiroz has confirmed Manchester United's interest in Miguel Veloso, but says signing the Sporting Lisbon midfielder is not a 'priority'.

Veloso has been tipped to follow former Sporting players Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani to Old Trafford after impressing in the UEFA Champions League this season.

The youngster's agent Paulo Barbosa told Sky Sports News last week that 'informal contact' had been made between the two clubs.

United's assistant manager Queiroz - a former coach of Sporting - acknowledged Veloso was among a string of Portuguese players the Premier League champions have been watching.

But Queiroz downplayed suggestions of an imminent deal for Veloso, saying the club are well stocked in the midfield department.

Ridiculous

"The scouting department is everywhere and it would be ridiculous to say that good players are not referenced," said Queiroz in Record.

"Miguel Veloso, Joao Moutinho, Quaresma, Bruno Alves, Bosingwa - all have been watched by us.

"Do we want to get these players? Of course, everyone does, however we can not work with 200 players!

"We have six players in Veloso's position, we signed Hargreaves this season and, at this point, he is not part of our options to buy as a priority."
