I don't mind buying him along with a striker, but a striker should be our top priority if we are going to buy anytime soon.
Silvestre - possible
O'Shea - nah
Fletcher - slightly possible but I don't want him to leave. Descent backup.
O'Shea is close to signing a new contract so doubt' he's leaving.
I hope this is bollocks. No matter how good a player Veloso is the central midfield is our strongest area and 10 million for a back up for Evra is very, very expensive.
I think Silvestre will be booted out in the sommer, which means we surely are in need of a new left back. But I prefer a more natural left back than Veloso. And a cheaper one.

I don't think Veloso would be coming in just as back up for Evra though. It says in the article that he is predominantly a holding midfielder. The future doesn't look too rosy for Fletcher if this is true.
I think we will sign him as a midfielder as well, but I really can't see any sense in bringing in another midfielder. We can't keep all of them happy if Scholes plays to 2010.
From the top of my head:
Scholes - getting on a bit. Still class, but won't be around forever.
Carrick - bought for £18 million and is at a good age. He'll be sticking around.
Hargreaves - see Carrick. Although SAF has indicated he is more a Champions League player and fitness issues mean that he could be used sparingly.
Fletcher - has struggled to make an impact this season and could be on his way.
Anderson - bought for the future.
Park - a fringe player who, when he returns from injury, will be happy with his role.
Ronaldo - first name on teamsheet.
Giggs - see Scholes.
Nani - see Anderson.
Eagles - no future at the club.
Martin - ditto.
On this basis, we have a core of 6 midfielders who will conceivably be at the top of their game next season. What sort of form Scholes and Giggs produce will have to be gauged at the time. I suppose it makes sense to get a player like Veloso in the squad instead of Fletcher because he is so adaptable and can cover three positions in the squad.
We should also be wary of saying, "another midfielder" because we all said the same sort of thing when SAF bought Evra and Vidic but they have all of a sudden become stalwarts in the backline. The composition of the squad can change in a flash - players get older, get sold etc and all of a sudden a Veloso (or anyone for that matter) shoot to prominence.

Struggled? How many games did he get? There is no point in buying veloso when we have fletcher. We spent too much recently and any more signings will put extra burden on the fans next season. We need to give our youth a chance.
If they (Carlos and Fergie) think Veloso can make the same impact as Vidic or Evra, then we should sign him straigt away of course. However it would surely mean bye bye to Carrick. I can't imagine him being happy with a sub role in the long term.
I prefer we keep the midfield as it is. When Scholes quits we'll have Hargreaves, Carrick and Anderson to fill the two spaces and unless Hargreaves goes off injured every other week that should be enough with maybe Fletcher filling in as fourth choice if he's still happy with a part time role in two years time.
Arse = France
Liverpool = Spain
Us = Portugal?
Majority of our players are still British unlike at those clubs.
Done deal.fletcher to rangers for hutton
True but if you count Brazilians we're starting to look a bit portugese:
Ronaldo
Nani
Quieroz
(Any more of the staff ? can't be arsed to check)
Rafael
Fabio
Veloso?
And thats not mentioning Kaka, Ronaldinho, and Eusebio

Done deal.
Veloso can join United in summer, I think... striker is priority for January.
As choiboyx012 said, Portugal is the team for the future. Can't disagree with that.
Veloso & Moutinho are very wanted players in Europe. If United could sign Veloso it would be a great move, IMO... The guy can defend and shoot from distance with power. He got the right physique to play in Premiership.

Might be worth a look at as i can't see Fletcher getting a looking
As a Scot, I assure you Fletcher is a better player than Hutton.
Veloso can play left back, center back and DM. Looks like an O'shea replacement/upgrade if there ever was one needed.
Is he like Hargreaves at DM? I mean is he as limited as Hargreaves?
Arsenal aim to beat Man Utd for £20M Veloso
Arsenal are planning a major bid for Sporting Lisbon midfield ace Miguel Veloso.
While Manchester United are following the Portugal international, O Jogo says Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is prepared to offer £20 million in January for the youngster.
United have a close relationship with Sporting, but if they want to land Veloso, they will have to match Arsenal's bid when the market reopens.
£20m ? Madness.
veloso will be one of the stars of Euro 2008, you heard it here first
From what i've seen of him he looks like a very technical player. Great passing, i'm actually sprised to hear he plays as a defender because i've only seen him in midfield and he seems to be the creative type of player and not so much defensive.
