Michael Oliver

Oliver's record against us includes some beauties. Here's some stats and figures:

Michael Oliver in charge of United:

He's reffed us 47 times:

He's given us 5 red cards, with just 1 for the opposition, an 87th minute second bookable offence for Danny Drinkwater in 2016.

He's given us 98 yellows, and on just 3 occasions has not booked any of our players. By contrast, he's given opponents 69 yellows, and on 14 occasions didn't give a single booking to opposition. That's almost 30% of the times he's refereed us an opponent has never had to even consider a player on a yellow.

Our win percentage with Oliver is 38%. Leicester are at 49%. Even allowing for Oliver getting more big games, that's poor. Spurs for example is 54%, Arsenal (who only recently got good) are at 50%. More in line with us are Everton at 33%.

Some of you may disagree with some of these, and in some cases Var should have stepped in, but from memory:

1) Nunez should have been sent off yesterday. If in doubt, watch the replay, though I blame Kavanagh more than Oliver
2) Oliver inexplicably intervened as VAR for possibly the worst penalty Ive seen given against us vs West Ham, in stoppage time
3) He somehow, impossibly, didnt give a penalty for a Romero handball as Garnacho's goalbound effort was blocked with a hand from yards away.
4) He gave Dalot a red card that pretty much no football person can understand to this day. This was the THIRD incredibly precious red card he'd given a United player
5) He sent of Herrera in a cup quarter final, for the very unusual case of team fouling. I dont believe hes ever done that before or since.
6) He sent off Di Maria for touching his shirt after a booking, the same season he allowed Joe Hart to go head to head.

These are before you get into the awful decisions weve forgotten with time, like fresh in the memory ones of Maguires perfect tackle will be forgotten. There have been countless times he's reffed games where the entire flow of the match has been decided by his whistle. From memory, I can remember one big call given in our favour from him - a late foul in a home win against fulham that could have been a pen. Its even intersting to look at the penalties hes given us, of which there have been 8. 2 were in close games - all others were in comfortable runaway wins, or when we were getting battered like 6-1 down at city. Against us, he's given 7- 6 of which were in close games where the penalty could be said to be of real consequence.

All in all, whatever way you slice it or feel about referees, is a very poor record, especially in the last 3 years or so.
Glad you have put this all down. Pitty nobody in the PGMOL can be bothered to.

Stellar work.

This is a great post, nice research!

Great post.

He's a match going Geordie. He attended the League Cup final two years ago probably singing anti United songs in Trafalgar Square and we're supposed to believe he's impartial? Give me a break.

This is a hell of a takedown:

PGMOL know no one cares enough to do anything, that's why they have got worse over the last seasons.

The only way to get something done is to make it not just about ABU, despite the clear fact Oliver referees us poorly. The bigger issue for the league is that he has an undeniable conflict of interest + there is now multiple instances of his effecting the title race (not even against United) to the benefit of people he is directly paid by. Webb is at the centre of it all, literally everyone you speak to in football says the same about him, that he thinks he's like a movie star, craves attention and has an ego bigger than football agents - until the current group are turfed out and something new takes it place, we will continue to see a deliberate misuse of VAR to keep the refs in 'power' on the field, bad calls, no logic and a bunch of guys on a power trip.

Given that was the first United game he’s officiated in 11 months, the Club have probably presented the data to PGMOL. The hope is that it’ll be another 11 months until we see him officiate us again.

Theres no point trying to discuss this because peoples views range from "you're making it up" to "payback for all those years under Fergie".

At this point it's the club's fault for not lodging an official complaint about him. The evidence is there and we're doing nothing about it.
Nottingham Forest did that and were sanctioned for it.

It’s a racket.

Kicked the ball into the net (bit unclear where exactly) again I think
There’s a video doing rounds on twitter (not of a great quality though), I’m pretty sure that he kicked it towards the stands. But it’s probably better to rewatch it before saying that conclusively.

Newcastle fans by the way properly properly hate Utd.

I know to us they're nothing really but to them we are the big enemy, on a par with Sunderland. There was a fascinating article in the Athletic last year about a journalist watching the FA Cup final in a Newcastle pub, they needed City to win to qualify for Europe, and there were loads of quotes in there from various Newcastle fans about how much they loathe Man Utd.

Oliver will have been about 11 or 12 when he saw his beloved Newcastle blow a 12 point lead and we snatched the title away from them. He'll hate us and you can tell from how he officiates our matches.

This is a hell of a takedown:

Nothing to see here, we shouldn't complain about Oliver.

Incredible stats, he didn't ref any of our games for 11 months (Why?) but he was on VAR a few times that I can remember. The club really should make a private complaint to PGMOL. We won't get anywhere while this cnut is fecking us over every chance he gets.

We ruined their best shot at the league in probably every, and not in a nice way - Fergie mentally disassembled their hero in public. It's entirely understandable the way they feel & incredibly naive from the PGMOL that they can't recognise it.

It is possible we (the club) have had words, but if he is allowed on VAR with us I'm not sure - that's potentially an even more damaging position as we saw with the haranging of the ref to give the penalty in the West Ham game. He needs properly removing from the league I'd suggest at this point, let him work overseas of whatever but his credibility is completely shot with the open Toon support, City paid work and dubious calls against us.

11 months off our games, and still managed to give 2 penalties against us

Only a couple of months since he fecked us as VAR against West Ham though.

The club needs to toughen up and start complaining about this or cnuts like Oliver will keep getting away with it. He's an ABU geordie twat.

How do we subscribe to this "11 months off Oliver" package ? We need those german journalists to find some leaks about him. No way he's completely clean.

It still doesn't protect you from him though. He still managed to cost us a game and get a manager sacked during that 11 month period via him being on VAR duties.
