He was at the match today with his brother, not suggesting that's a sign he'll re-join us or anything. I'm just baffled as to how van Gaal let him go for practically peanuts and chose to keep Blackett and McNair.

The commentator during the game said we had a buy back clause. I thought we didn't?

Because LVG was a complete fecknugget?

Lukaku bullied him for that third goal. It's not the first time that's happened to him.

I wouldn't get rid of Smalling or Jones for him.

Torres destroyed Vidic in almost every game they played against each other... We should have sold him! ;)

This is something else that highlights how bad our transfer activities have been in recent years. Paying hefty fees for players we sold for peanuts and offloading players for peanuts we paid hefty fees for.

And is Michael Keane the level that Vidic is?

It's not the first time a quick strong player burst past him like he's not there. If Smalling or Jones defended like that then they would be crucified. What we need to do is find a world class defender, if we can't find anything better then what we got then there's very little point signing one.

Probably the same reason he sold Rafael, Nani & Hernandez for a combined £10m and paid around £40m to replace two of them with Darmian and Depay.

Because he is a fecking loon.

It's 2017 dude, stop living in the past....

In my opinion, Evans should never have been sold at all, but that's for another thread.

I like Keane. Felt it was a mistake to let him go, and I'd be delighted if he returns. The thing is, there are better, but more expensive options in the market, so what should we do? Buy a player who's already top class and slot them straight in beside Bailly, or trust the defenders we already have (who to be fair, have largely been rather good this season), and bring in a young lad who knows what the club is about and trust CB whisperer Mourinho to turn him into either a top player or a respectable squad option (I actually don't know the answer, I'm just posing the question).

You have posed a good question actually.

Jose seems to be pretty good at developing solid defenders. He did it with Terry, Cahill, Carvalho, Varene and we can see how Rojo is improving. I think he will relish the prospect of turning Kaene into a great defender. The lad has the basic tools to develop. Potential wise, I think he is better than Stones and Jose actually wanted Stones at Chelsea.

With Rojo and Bailly improving, Kaene won't be a bad addition at all. At the very least, he will be an improvement on a player that constantly gets injured.

I agree, if we're buying a centre back it should be to partner Rojo. Smalling and Bailly can provide good cover with Jones being sold although I think Jose would rather keep Jones around.

Bailly has immense potential. He can be incredibly good. He just needs to stop being over confident and cut out those errors.

Rojo is slightly ahead of him IMO. Something clicked in his head at some point in time. He has been playing like a man possessed. First choice center back for United at the moment.

Nice seeing him at the game yesterday, doesn't have to mean anything OFC but still nice he came to support UTD.

He can't handle the big ones Rondon did him what Lukaku did and got himself a goal too. Smalling and Jones would get crucified for it

To be honest I think he did the right thing selling those three. Rafael had only played just over 100 games in six years, Nani is the most frustrating player I have ever seen in a United shirt and Hernandez had gone stale here.

I'd have him over Jones but only because Phil can't keep himself fit.

Needs to take the experience on board and learn from the Lukaku bullying for the goal. It was very good from Lukaku, and Keane needs to show next time he learnt from it.

I posted that just before their partnership took off, unless someone like Bonucci is available I wouldn't buy a centre back to go straight into the starting XI.

Selling them perhaps, but he didn't replace them with better players. In both cases we ended up paying a shit load of money to downgrade on both Nani and Rafael.

Hernandez hadn't gone stale for me, everyone was shit under Moyes season after he was on loan. The last two years we could have done with a striker that averages 20 goals a season, Mourinho has said as much.

I have to admit that I was one of those pushing seriously for a more experienced ball playing center back. Now I think both Bailly and Rojo handle the ball pretty well unlike Smalling and Jones. I still believe we need another center back but only to replace one of our injured two, preferably Jones. Unless such a center back is far better in terms of quality, I am fine with Bailly and Rojo being our first choice center backs.

Thanks LvG

I think he sold him during his drunken speech.

But what an idiot LvG was, I'm not saying this because Michael Keane is a world-class defender but even i could've told he is miles ahead of Blackett and McNair as most here stated.

Feeling more and more convinced that we'll sell both Jones and Smalling and sign Keane and another CB.

Jones is a goner, Smalling will become a squad player at best.

Assuming the plan is to sign 2-4 players this summer as Jose said, that would be a terribly inefficient way towards squad improvement. I'd sooner sign no CB's than sign two of them. We have more pressing needs.

I also think Jones and Smalling will be gone, along with Blind. I dont think it will be Keane but probably Varane as part of the De Gea deal, or someone like Lindelof or Gimenez coming in. Hopefully by getting rid of the deadwood will give Tuanzebe and maybe Williams a chance.

So you'd go into the season with Rojo/Bailly/Tuanzebe as our CB for the next season?

????

He clearly means he would sooner keep the current back 4 than replace 2 of them. That means keeping Smalling and Jones.

Smalling and Jones aren't a part of the current back four. I'd be shocked if Smalling isn't sold, Jones is a wildcard, Jose seems to like him but he's mistake prone and injury prone.

Furthermore, with futures of Young, Shaw and Carrick also being unclear, we also need to have some English players in registered squad to fulfil our quota. Keane being homegrown and a good players ticks all the boxes.

Also on a side note, don't start your post with????. Makes you look like a kid.

Yeah this obv.

My point was that if we sell Smalling and Jones, then its obvious Jose will buy more players. I'm not sure also how doing this type of business will hurt our chances of buying other players. Financially it'll even itself out.

Sure, if we sell two CB's we'll look to replace them, either by signing one and relying on Tuanzebe/TFM to cover the 4th spot or by signing two CB's. I also didn't say it hurt our chances of buying other players, I specifically said if we're only signing 2-4 players this season, I'd rather we didn't use two of those transfers on CB's. I'd prefer to keep player turnover to a minimum this summer. Add 3-4 players to improve the XI, get rid of obvious deadwood like Rooney, Darmian, Januzaj. Selling two back-up CB's to sign presumably one starter and one back-up CB, like you suggest, would either mean a lot more player turnover or more pressing needs being ignored.

I think knowing Mourinho, he's unlikely to go for a young option as 4th choice CB. TFM could fill that role perfectly though.

Today's report state Keane to Spurs and Dier to us.....i would prefer Keane!
