Feeling more and more convinced that we'll sell both Jones and Smalling and sign Keane and another CB.

Think we'll just sell Jones and buy back Keane. Smalling will probably stay to be a squad player.

Smalling and Jones aren't a part of the current back four. I'd be shocked if Smalling isn't sold, Jones is a wildcard, Jose seems to like him but he's mistake prone and injury prone.

Furthermore, with futures of Young, Shaw and Carrick also being unclear, we also need to have some English players in registered squad to fulfil our quota. Keane being homegrown and a good players ticks all the boxes.

Also on a side note, don't start your post with????. Makes you look like a kid.

Smalling has always played when fit this season and so has Jones, so Jose quite obviously sees them as candidates for the back four.

Both of them seem very loyal to the club and there's absolutely no reason to replace two homegrown english CBs who are both entering their prime years for a decent kid like Keane other than if one or both of them wanted to leave.

If we were to go after another CB it would have to be someone who's obviously on a different level to the current four options that we have or it's just changes for the sake of changes.
With the players coming through, In trying to resign Keane and correcting the 'wrong' we did with him we'd just be repeating the same 'mistake' by blocking kids like Tuanzebe.

I'd take Keane for sure.

Jose Mourinho must really want to punch LvG. If he hadn't sold Keane, di Maria or Chicharito, I dare say all 3 would have been key players for us this season (Imo Di Maria would have thrived here under Mourinho, like he did at Madrid)

Given the emergence of Rojo & Bailly, I don't see a reason to bring back Keane. As pointed out, we already have 2 homegrown CB's and Keane isn't a big improvement over any of our CB's, unless you have Blind as a CB.

Missing the obvious makes you look more like a kid in my book than question marks. The original comment was quite clear in its intention.

By back 4, I meant the 4 CBs (my bad that). We all agree we need 4 CBs for the season. The guy was suggesting that given a choice between:
1) Replacing 2 CBs with new ones.
2) Going into the next season with the same 4 CBs as now.

...he would clearly prefer option 2. Like I said, it was quite clear.

As a side note, if you'd be shocked by Smalling staying then be ready to be shocked.

I haven't seen enough of Keane to know how good he is to be honest, but if he's good enough to play for England, he's a bit above average. So similar to Smalling. I don't rate Smalling that highly so would be open to bringing in Keane. Jones did well enough this season, but he's always injured. Rojo has done better - let's see if he develops further. Blind isn't a CB for me at all, so another vote for Keane as it were.

Keane would be a solid player. But at the £30m he'd cost and that he's not exactly much better than Smalling or Jones (if at all), I think we should move for other targets and take the 20% sell on fee we have when Burnley sells elsewhere.

He wouldn't have to be better he would just have to stay fecking FIT and not thieve his wages.

If we're looking for a CB who doesn't have a history of being injury prone, then surely there are better ones available for that price?

I hope you are right, because I think it would be the right move. Neither Jones nor Smalling is the right move going forward and I've always thought highly of Keane as a defender.

We should seriously have loftier ambitions than Michael Keane. He's no better than Jones nor Smalling and half this forum wants rid of them.
More reliable than the pair, they're always injured.

Personally wouldn't mind seeing Keane replace Smalling in our squad. Bailly, Rojo, Jones and Keane are good CB options imho. Tuanzebe also being an option.

Keane was in the same academy year as Lingard and Pogba wasn't he?

Would be great to have 3 of them in our first team, even if Pogba and Keanes development was helped majorly by leaving the club.

Yes.

We've got four CB options for our starting eleven, Jones being as injury-prone as he is, is what keeps the balance. If everyone were fit all the time they would've left because there's only so many games and someone always has to be left on the sidelines, which is exactly what Keane would be most of the time should he join. He's a good premier league CB, why would he take this opportunity to play second fiddle to Bailly and Rojo?
When is Tuanzebe going to get a game with four senior CBs vying for game-time ahead of him?

If we can sell Jones for a respectable price and get Keane for one of the same then it'd be acceptable. I do like him, but I don't see him as an upgrade on anything we have. Our back line is good enough I feel, and should only be tinkered with if it's going to be improved with proven quality and/or somebody with real leadership capacity.

Keane is younger and playing for England already - I'd say he's probably a better medium term bet than either Smalling or Jones at this point.

Smalling and Jones should both be sold in the summer as hey are simply average & way to injury-prone.

Whether Keane is the solution or not may debatable. I can't see him being good enough to be an upgrade on Rojo-Bailly. However, as an alternative I would much rather have him then Smalling and Jones.

He's under a year younger than Jones, so not much in it there. I think Jones is the better player, but is injury prone. Which is why I'd rather buy higher ceiling players. If we're looking to bring our youth team back together, we might as well bring back Ravel Morrison.

Personally i'd like to see Keane back, its not like their is a list of world class centre backs out their right now, so signing some one who has proven they are excellent in this league who also knows the club and is about as good a centre back as on the market this summer seems like a no brainer.

In fact I do Jones a disservice as he made his England debut at a far younger age than Keane did.

Still, I think given constant injuries, Keane makes for a more interesting option than Jones.

The idea of getting another academy payer back is nice and all and he's had a good season in a style of play that suits him but still has the same problems of being too flat footed and easily beaten on the ground by quick players. I think if he's put into a team who want to play further up the pitch and aren't quite happy to get large numbers back and defend their box he could get exposed quite regularly. I don't think he's any better than Jones or Smalling and for the money it would take to get him back I think we could get better.

I think he could step up to a bigger club like Cahill did.

We'll need to have some English players in our ranks in order to fill quotas.

Makes sense.

How fast is he?

Mourinho has likely had enough of Jones and/or Smalling. Could definitely see Keane replacing one of them as the defensive deputy in the squad. Not sure if he thinks we need a new starting CB. Bailly and Rojo have been a good partnership. If he views them as the partnership for next season, then likely only one of Jones/Smalling is shifted out and Keane brought in.

If he thinks we should be in for a new starting CB I can see them both being sold.

How about if we sign him and convert him into a DM?

From what I've seen he has the ability to do it. Could save us spending £50m+ on Dier for a United youth product who can potentially do a similar job.

I think Fosu-Mensah is better at DM then Keane could potentially be

I would say pace is his "worst" attribute. Certainly not quick, but not slow either. Very similar to Gary Cahill really, but better on the ball and not quite as good in the air.

Would be a good signing. Jones is constantly injured and there was a clause regarding Keane so that would mean he'll be rather cheap (already on a contract that isn't that long). So Jones would have a fee (if sold) that's probably similar to Keane's so even if Keane wouldn't make a bigger improvement at first, the biggest win would be to have a CB that isn't injuryprone and the club wouldn't 'lose' any money.

Interesting. In attendance at our game on Sunday, confirms he's leaving on Thursday

How far is Burnley from Manchester? It's possible that he came to watch us. Even the likes of sylvestre and Phil Neville were in attendance

One of the obvious things about him is he has played all 33 games for Burnley this season. Given he is on par with Smelling I'd rather see him in the squad. Better, more reliable option that doesn't make retarded decisions that cost us points.

I hate seeing Smelling in the team.

Couldn't be arsed changing the auto-correct, it fits Mike.

Yeah i agree.

Throw in Rashford and the spine of our team would all be youth products. Keane-Pogba-Lingard-Rashford
