I totally agree with Kidders, can't see Keane returning as a backup player. He left United to get game time, and now he is a star player for a PL team. He will probably get offers from the likes of Southampton, Everton or West Ham where he is promised a place in the starting 11, so why would he return to Manchester as a bench warmer? For me, it would look like a step backwards in his career. If we sign Keane it would probably be our only centre back signing, and I am not sure that I am comfortable with that. He certainly looks like a good player that would suit as a partner to Bailly, but I really think that we should be aiming higher than this with our signings. Keane thrives in the defensive Burnley line where he has a lot of work to be done, but playing as a centre defender for a top team is another story. You have to keep your concentration up for the entire 90 minutes, even if you are not involved in the game for long periods. Put Smalling and Jones in the Burnley defense, and they would look like better players than Keane. Just look at Evans who went from being absolute shit in his last season in Manchester to suddenly becoming a fantastic player for West Brom.

That seems like two of us have the same thoughts about Keane !

You are crying over spilt milk and it serves no purpose in the decisions that need to be made now. Mourinho clearly sees aomething he can work with in Keane and his record with CBs is close to spotless so lets trust him on that. I also agree with thise that are saying that we are a long way from competing for the CL so small but incremental improvements will have to do for now and when we are at that stage we can always sign the big names that people are crying for.
£25m looks like a lot but I am sure that when factored in with what we have probably been quoted for other defenders and in the context of what we need in other areas of the pitch the management has settled on him as the cheap but adequate option for the team's immediate needs.

We dont know there is any element of truth in the reports at all yet to say what Mourinho has any interest in him.

I've chipped in with my comments on our other 'targets' so here's mine on Keane, would he be a certain starter ? NO, is he £25m better than what we have ? NO, would he be happy as a squad player having made the England squad ? NO. It does'nt make sense to me, our big money arrivals need to go straight into the first team and IMPROVE on what we already have, if he is happy with limited game time and replaces Smalling for a small difference in transfer fees then fine, but it would still leave me thinking we need another top quality CB and I don't see us buying 2 CB's in one window when we have 5, maybe 6 that can already play there.

Spot on

Lets just close the Transfer Forum then.

You are stating press rumours as facts, which you shouldnt really do as a way of expressing your argument until they actually become so. We are linked with different players virtually every single day towards the opening of transfer windows. Not to mention you saying we are making small incremental improvements and are unable to sign the big names people are after so Keane would make a good signing? Have you been in a coma for the last few summers? We have spent ridiculous amounts of money, signed some huge names and also broken the world record transfer fee. Ibrahimovic, Pogba, Di Maria, Falcao, Schweinsteiger are all bigger names than we have probably ever signed, bar Veron the only really big names we have signed have generally been from within our own league, your argument makes no sense whatsoever.

I haven't taken anything as fact because what I meant over spilt milk was the poster who was moaning that we are now buying him back at 25m having sold him at 2m, a lot of errors were made then which shouldn't affect the decisions veing made now. I think there is a real possibility of this happening and him being a good enough signing for our purposes next season and beyond. That we have managed to attract and sign big names isn't an absolute positive because all bar Pogba have left or about to leave without much change in our fortunes on the pitch so maybe a back to basics signing like him would do well, I don't know! But I would trust Mourinho on defensive signings.
On the other hand given our defensive records over the past two years I would say spending upwards of 30m on a CB is unnecesary moreso considering our needs all over the pitch.

You're right about spilt milk. What we sold him for has no bearing on what he might be worth now, he's either a good choice at good value or he isn't, the past is irrelevant.

Burnley chairman Mike Garlick says United aren't re-signing Keane. Make of that what you will.

...at the price quoted.

They'll sell him for over £25m. They're a crap team, going nowhere but back to the Championship,Keane knows it!

Good, a team with our supposed ambitions should be aiming much higher than a 'good' CB we only sold to Burnley a year or so ago for £25-30million.

Seriously, if we re-sign Keane we are going to seriously regret it coz he will not improve our defence at all, IMO.

Agreed. We have plenty of good CBs already. If we sign someone he needs to be an improvement. Keane had one good season at Burnley. Smalling or Jones would walk into that team and be their best defender. Pointless transfer which I don't think will happen

Spot on.
Underwhelming, not an upgrade, and a little bit of embarrassment at again having to buy back a player who slipped away for buttons.

We really need a dominant central defender and this kid fits the bill. Would be a great addition.

We're one of the biggest football clubs in the world; i'm sure we can get over the supposed embarrassment.

Why would I be furious about Danny Drinkwater? Are United about to sign him for £25m?

I'm not furious about Keane either, just pointing out how poorly the club dealt with the situation. Keane was a very talented young defender. He was excellent on loan at Leicester and Burnley and was impressive in his first team opportunities at United. He didn't improve out of nowhere. It was clear he had potential. He was allowed to leave because McNair was better on the ball and Blackett was left footed.

Allowing LVG to make wholesale changes to the squad when he was on a short term contract and had such an unorthodox style of play was ludicrous. When assessing centre backs, he's about the only manager in world football who doesn't hold "defensive ability" as a key requirement.

If this deal happens, that's a £23m loss on Keane after the losses on Di Maria, Schneiderlin, Schweinsteiger, Depay and most likely future losses on Darmian and Blind. Add to that players like Chicharito, Welbeck, Nani, Zaha sold for peanuts who all could have been very useful over the last couple of seasons.

All are signs of a poorly run club. If Keane is re-signed and fails to make the grade the club will be an utter laughing stock.

drama queen

I would buy him. Good and fit CB, made in Manchester and would be good to see him lining up with the rest of the academy lads. He will be here to fight for a place in the starting lineup, not as a first choice CB, unless he turns out to be really really good. He will get his game time, no doubt. Ideally i would sell both CB's and bring in another one alongside Keane.

It is pretty fecking embarrassing, we're buying him back from Burnley after one decent season in the league. Playing an integral role in winning titles and reaching a Champions League final with Juve is one thing but I don't see what sets Keane apart from other promising centre backs like Maguire or Gibson who would cost less and haven't been quietly shipped off to Burnley after spending years at United.

Hopefully that our supposed interest is just rumours and not true at all, which I would think woul dbe the case anyway, the transfer makes no sense to me

If Keane is not good enough - then who is?

After one decent season why are people rating him highly, all of our centre backs are better than Keane and in my opnion only Bailly is good enough to be a first eleven player for us. Tuanzabe and/or Mensah could well be to in the future but as it stands we have four other squad centre backs, why sign another one that is no better than what we have?

If Keane is not good enough - then who is?

Ungettable CB's unfortunately, Varane, Bonucci, Chiellini, Ramos etc etc

In truth I suspect there is another Bailly out there somewhere and that's where our scouts earn their money, hell no to your Keane's and Van Dijk's

Thats not true. Jones is too injured to be available, Smalling is a disaster waiting to happen and Blind has no business playing CB unless a last resort.

Given that Rojo is likely out for the first half of the season, and there is no telling in what condition he will return, we need at least one new CBs. I think Keane is ok for the slot, but if you think otherwise, please name someone else.

It is unproductive to say no to Keane when you cant offer a better alternative.

I really like Malang Sarr but, it might be too early for him to make a move.

Where did that little nugget come from ?

He is out for 6 months, has been since april, will likley be back august/september, early october at the latest. That means he misses the end of this season, pre-season and most likley the start of next season but he won't be out for the first half of the season at all. That estimate is for Zlatan's injurry, not rojo's

  • Manolas (better?)
  • Van Dijk (injury-prone, not better)
  • Gimenez (70m?)
  • Marquinhos (80m?)
  • Varane (not available)
  • Koulibaly (has had a mediocre season)
  • Romagnoli ( Ok give you this one)
  • Laporte (same here 70m)
  • Lindelöf (signed a new deal higher clause)
  • Rugani (not better)
  • De Vrij (poor)
  • Pepe (on a free !) OLD
All a country mile better than Keane

Does anyone know why Keane and kasper shmikes were at our home game recently as guests ?

  • Manolas
  • Van Dijk
  • Gimenez
  • Marquinhos
  • Varane
  • Koulibaly
  • Romagnoli
  • Laporte
  • Lindelöf
  • Rugani
  • De Vrij
  • Pepe (on a free !)
All a country mile better than Keane
None of those are better alternatives to Keane
  • Manolas - £45m+ and weak in the air
  • Van Dijk - major injury and not worth the reported £50m
  • Gimenez - Not for sale
  • Marquinhos - £55m+
  • Varane - Not for sale
  • Koulibaly - £60m+
  • Romagnoli - £40m and unlikely to be sold
  • Laporte - Not for sale
  • Lindelöf - 40m and not a country mile better, just higher potential
  • Rugani - Not for sale
  • De Vrij - £30m, Ok on the ball, very slow and terrible in the air. Worse than keane,
  • Pepe (on a free !) - 34yrs and well past it, behind Nacho at madrid and not better than keane

You think Blind would be sold for less than 13.8 million GBP?

The estimates I have seen after his surgery puts his return to the pitch around Jan 2018
