Greatest of his generation.

Done it with two different clubs in two different leagues and now has a major international trophy to his name.

Euros > Copa America tbh. Most teams in Copa America can't defend for shit. Who did Argentina beat again, countries like Panama right?
Euro >>>>>> Copy America, which are played so much more often in random years that no one really knows why.

Some people are busy claiming Ronaldo had a bad Euro, despite the fact his 2 goals in the group stage helped them out of the group and he scored the winner in the SF
As I said in my post previously his goals helped Portugal on their way to the title a lot, but overall it wasn't a very good tournament for him.
He didn't score a winner as I remember vs Wales, he scored a first goal.

It's ridiculous mate.

His performance against Hungary (2 goals and an assist) got them through.
His involvement in the Croatia goal.
His SF performance.

Can't believe people say he's been poor, it's BS.

Lmao, they won 2-0. Which goal is the winner, the first or the second (not forgetting he got an assist for the second).

This summer has been a very heavy defeat for Lionel Messi.

Failure at international level resulting in widespread ridicule as he caved in and retired from Argentina, a criminal conviction for tax evasion and now he's had to watch his biggest rival secure a permanent victory over him.
He's a multi millionaire and one of the best footballers of all time
He will live!
Ronaldo didn't even have an input in the final so how's that a victory over him?

What?? So winning by 2-0 the first goal isn't the winner?

Why do you love Ronaldo so much? Like it's really scary. Are you even a United fan?
You have been on this Ronaldo vs Messi debate for like years....does the comparisons really hurt you that much?

It's a different Era now International trophies mean less than they used to, the CL is much more competitive than the Euros or the WC, the latter are just rarer.
How's the CL more competitive? You have 3 teams that are almost guaranteed a semi final every season.

It's far from bottling.

Look at the tournaments who was superior.

By the way Copa America 2016
Messi Goals: 5 Assists: 4 Matches: 5
Euro 2016 (Ronaldo most shots out of anyone)
Ronaldo Goals: 3 Assists: 3 Matches: 7

Far from bottled, Messi has been superior in all international tournaments, including finals but lacked a bit of luck which Ronaldo had tonight.

Of all games to bump this thread for, we go with the one where Ronaldo is injured after 20min and contributes next to nothing? Bit weird.

I think the majority of neutrals favour Messi. I know many United fans who are so stubborn to even consider the possibility that Messi is better.
Most rival fans think Ronaldo is way behind Messi. I disagree...I think they are closer than most admit but of non united fans/ players all say Messi is better.

Exactly  The posts in here are half amusing and half embarrassing.

Funny thing is Ronaldo did play for United and won a lot of trophies for us. Yet there are more Messi fans who obsess with him.

Scoring 1st in a 2-0 win isn't a winning goal and scoring the 2nd in a 2-0 is padding the stats. The lengths these people go to, it's really funny. :D

Nice stats. Messi would trade all those goals and assists for a winners medal in a heart beat.

I think its more alarming Eder can score a goal in a final but Aguero and Higuain can't.

Nah, Messi remains better for me, he has far more defining moments where his class just outshines all the other 21 players on the pitch. But it's close.

Also not as alarming but, that its taken Quaresma 32 years to realise how to be a team player. Cheeky bid? :p

You would think this was obvious but clearly not - the bumps are because Ronaldo now has an international trophy and Messi does not - not sure if you're aware but their international achievements are quite a point of discussion throughout this whole debate.

Did you watch the Copa last year?

I think the Copa > Euros. The Copa is one of the best normalizers in football, where exceptional talent is not respected. Even Messi looks human.

I think the Euro's just reaffirms for me that Ronaldo is one of the greatest players of his generation and of all time, but not the best. He didn't do anything incredible, or individually brilliant, but nonetheless was good when it mattered.

Ronaldo and Messi are up there with Pele and Maradonna at this point in time.

For me it is Messi, Pele, Maradonna, Ronaldo (CR7).

When I say Ronaldo though I mean the CR7 of 2008-2012/3 that was the best version this one right now isn't good he outputs big numbers but he's gone he can't dribble or influence a game like he should do.

Messi is far beyond Ronaldo because he can pull the strings, it helps Messi is nearly 3 years younger because he just has the legs on Ronaldo right now.

I don't think Ronaldo deserves the Ballon d'Or, Suarez does but he'll win it.

This settles it Ronnie is the winner.. He cries from the Joy of winning.. The other one just cries and steals money from the goverment..

Messi must be fuming at the fact Eder managed to score while the likes of fecking Aguero and Higuain couldn't do shit.

I feel Ronaldo's personality brings a lot of biased against him. Just because Messi is more likeable (God knows why, Ronaldo is more charitable, pays taxes etc. ) doesn't make this argument so clear cut.

For me. Ronaldo edges it.

For me, Messi's playmaking attributes outstrip the advantges that Ronaldo brings (freakish athleticism, unrelenting desire etc), though it is close.

Such an intriguing story, the rivalry between them will define this whole era to some extent in the history books - people really should just enjoy it more instead of exerting energy spouting the drivel like you see in the majority of threads like these.

True. But Messi is an excellent goalscorer. Higuain and Aguero have the tendency to turn to donkeys every now and then but why can't Messi score when his team needs a goal?

This by the way has no bearing on my opinion on whether Messi > Ronaldo.

I have huge respect for both, if I was as good as those two in my respected field I'd be changing the world literally.

They are great professionals but one is vastly more talented and all rounded than the other, both ahead of the pack.

When you look at performance matrixs and statistics Messi is as far ahead of Ronaldo as Ronaldo is ahead of other players so it's quite a gap, it does help Messi is 3 years younger though.

Both GOATs but Messi the Goat.

Why is it wrong to support or even love Ronnie? For me he was one of the best players i've seen at this club and he always played his heart out. Proper professional!

@Cal? does make good points, imo. I would let likes rain, but sadly i can't.

On a serious note, Ronnie is edging Messi in a lot of things now, imo. At the moment Messi is the better dribbler (but so is Hazard :D) and of course he's the better playmaker. But everything Ronaldo touches turns into gold and that's not because of his looks. :boring:

One thing that is undeniable is that Ronaldo definitely wants it more in terms of being the best of his generation / all time . You get the feeling that messi could just retire tomorrow and probably not give a feck . He really has no personality whatsoever and I imagine his mrs is victim of said personality elsewhere in their private life .

Messi is the only player that every time I watch , and every time he gets the ball , I get excited because something godly could happen at any second . I don't think there's even been more God given ability in any sportsman, he's just a joy to watch.

Hope that he gets a bit more visually and vocally competitive this coming season and gives us one last year the likes of which we might not see again .

He didnt even play in the final. Eder won it for Portugal. If anything it shows how good this Portugal team is to beat a great French team at home without their main man

I thought Pepe and Nani were Portugal's best players.

Good for both of them.
