Ronaldo can win WC as well and he still wont be even close to Messi. Not sure which i enjoy more this days, Ronaldo performances or his fanboys....

We'll see if Ronaldo's still playing in 2018 and can win a world cup. One thing is for sure though we'll never see the great one Lionel Messi lift a World Cup :D

While I think that Messi is and will be remembered as the better player, I laugh with people who act like this isn't even debate worthy.

Both of them have been by far the best players in football in the last 25 years. By the end of this year, each of them will have more Ballon D'Ors than any player in the history, and Messi will have only one Ballon D'Or more than Ronaldo. In the last 8 years, only once, both of them didn't finish in top 2. Messi has had the better club career, but Ronaldo has won his share of trophies (3 UCL) and actually won an international trophy. Both have scored a fantastic number of goals, with Ronaldo leading there, and both have scored a shitload of goals in the big matches.

Two of the best players in the history of game, and we won't see their equals in a very long time, if ever. Messi was the better one, but Ronaldo has been very near him for their entire careers.

I'm so happy for Ronaldo. I know he wasn't necessarily the star of the Euros but you can't say that he doesn't deserve this. Seeing how passionate he was when he got injured and at the end when he was on the touch line, how can you not love him? We'll never see anyone like him again.

And as for the debate between Ronaldo and Messi, they're just two unbelievable players and I think they're both so good that it's really just down to personal preference as to which one is better. For me, it will always be Ronaldo, but I feel sorry for people who can't appreciate the both of them because you probably won't see anyone at their level again in your life.

Anyway, I'm just buzzing for Ronaldo tonight, he deserves it.

And idiots like SAF would rather have Ronaldo on their team right?

It's entirely possible that SAF could be biased... Much like if you were to ask Pep who he'd rather have the answer would be different or if you were to ask Mourinho and so on.

Although let's not act like SAF never got things wrong. How much did he pay for Bebe? He played Rafael in midfield before Pogba... which resulted in Pogba leaving and now you have to pay 100m just to get him back

Does anyone find it difficult to rate Cristiano Ronaldo as a player in recent times? I can't help but feel more threatened if the opposing team has Suarez / Robben / Neymar in its ranks over CR9.

Right but if Sir Alex Ferguson can have that opinion, it doesn't make all of us that would prefer Ronaldo over Messi "idiots of modern football"
Whoever said that is one of the extreme fanbois of Messi. And some other people on this thread are the same for Cristiano.

These people always have to provoke the normal fans like us who support only one of these players but respect both.

Fair enough. Personally I think Ronaldo and Messi are very, very close and I would have a tough time choosing just one for my team but I'd go with Ronaldo because of his aura/style of play.

He's not a dribbler anymore he's a poacher but a very good one.

I think he'll play the next 3 years in the role Ibra does now, but Ronaldo will be better at it, and still bag 40 goals.

Seriously Ronaldos aura won the Final?

I said it influenced it. Ronaldo's presence was an influence.

Read my other post. I didn't say it's right if SAF says it. I just said it to show that if someone like SAF can have that opinion then us "idiots" can also have it.

Wasn't aimed at anyone in particular but I do think you have to be a moron to not accept that 'Ronaldo vs Messi' is at least a valid point of discussion.

Well, i also think you have to be a moron to think they are really close but im not saying that here so people dont get offended, no need for insults. We laugh at your account and you laugh at ours, no harm done.

Ronaldo not being close to messi is nonsense, surely you know that?

To you its nonsense, to me its not. We all see the game differently. You rate MVila as one of the best midfielders in the world IIRC, 90% of the football world will say you are crazy and you talk nonsense that doesnt mean they are right though.

This is where I stand on this as well.

Messi may yet reverse his decision, wouldn't say it's garunteed that he'll never win it.
Indeed, when it comes to non-Barca stuff, Messi is the master of the bottling job, he might yet bottle his retirement

Good for you.

So take out the statistics, who's the better player? For me - Messi. Ronaldo is a fantastic goal scorer, and he may go down as the greatest goal scorer of all time for me. But the better player? It's painfully easy to make that call for Messi. He does things no other player can do.

Basically this and I find this whole 'debate' very tedious for this exact reason.

Even though those who think Ronaldo is the better player are in the minority, it's a fairly sizeable minority nonetheless. I would really like those who genuinely think that Ronaldo is the better player to articulate properly why they think he is, because I do find it really puzzling.

On a serious not, I like many other regard Messi as the better player, I have always and will always prefer Ronaldo.

It's certainly a hell of a lot closer than some people will have you think.

Can I try to add some balance here although I think it useless cause this thread is basically Messi vs Ronaldo fan boys.

I do like Messi a bit more but.

Portugal would go out if it weren't for Ronaldo's 2 goals. Also after his shot was saved vs Croatia Quaresma scored a winning goal and Ronaldo started the counter which resulted in goal. He scored a goal and assisted for Nani's goal vs Wales. So he was very important for Portugal to reach the final although overall he didn't have a very good tournament tbh.

Saying his antics behind the line in the end were important or his aura helped the team is a bit. Funny.

He has one international trophy now and is better than Messi in that regard but I feel overall they're really close and it's a question what you prefer.

What I wanted to ask is, will the same arguments of being a GOAT be used for Ronaldo.
In the sense that for Messi to be even regarded as such he needs to win the world cup. Since Messi can't win Euros I guess the same thing should be used for Ronaldo? :)

But as I said he won something internationally with Portugal and we're still waiting for Messi to win something at international level.
Although I don't think world cup should be so important to regard some player as GOAT or no GOAT.

He has done what Ronaldo has done though, got his team to the final THREE TIMES.

Ronaldo didn't play in the final remember that.

This.

It's so painfully obvious who the better footballer is.

Ronaldo is a better goalscorer than Messi but not by anywhere near enough to warrant overlooking the fact that Messi is a better all around player, a better dribbler, a better passer, more creative, better touch etc.

It makes a change from the old Maradona v Pele debates though. (Maradona fwiw!)

It's a different Era now International trophies mean less than they used to, the CL is much more competitive than the Euros or the WC, the latter are just rarer.

Why do people spend so much time arguing about this?
People have their preference and will not change what's the point of arguing?

I think the majority of neutrals favour Messi. I know many United fans who are so stubborn to even consider the possibility that Messi is better.

This. Plus the amount of antagonising posts from both sides make it seem like a school yard argument. Better to just close this thread.

He got his team to the final? Let's look at the WC, goals in the group stage and nothing at all after as Argentina bored their way to the final. MASCHERANO did more to get them to the WC final.

Ronaldo scored the winning goal in the SF.

Also he got injured but he did play.

You could argue Messi's better in that aspect too. Pretty sure his goal scoring ratio is better. And I'm positive his conversion rate is higher as well.

Come on he couldn't help going off injured. Messi goes missing in finals for Argentina end of.

Both ridiculous honestly, Messi actually played well in all three finals he missed one penalty in this Copa.

Messi actually did more than Ronaldo did in this tournament in each of the Copas and World Cup.

It's a strange argument, yes Ronaldo has won silverwear which is great for him, but he hasn't had a superior tournament.

I think it's one thing to compare players based on what they've achieved and a completely different thing to compare them in terms of talent and impact on the game.

For example there's a decent number of spanish players that have won all there is to win, league titles, champions league, domistc cups, european cup and world cup, yet i still can't put them ahead of messi and ronaldo in terms of talent.

My honest opinion is that if you're going to look at their whole career, even though he's a criminal now, messi is ahead of ronaldo in terms of pure talent and impact on the game.

I guess his goals in the group stage counted for nothing. And Argentina boring their way to the final is a bit rich after the way Portugal got to their title.

Euros > Copa America tbh. Most teams in Copa America can't defend for shit. Who did Argentina beat again, countries like Panama right?

Some people are busy claiming Ronaldo had a bad Euro, despite the fact his 2 goals in the group stage helped them out of the group and he scored the winner in the SF
