Playing in the CL against and English team is not the same if he plays in that league, you see the refs would be English and he would be playing against Stokes and Co. Anyway we don't know and he could be a great player there as well.
Yep, it is more difficult playing against United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal than against relegation fodder.

And Messi has destroyed English clubs time afer time.

This is why I always find the, "Messi has only done it in one league", or "Messi would struggle in the Premier League" comments to be utterly bizarre. He's proven time and time again that he's more than capable of delivering against the top teams from leagues across all of Europe.

could be

What? He'll surely become a complete playmaker than a complete striker. He's already doing most of the playmaking in the team that won the league and CL last season. FWIW I don't think he will ever decline to a level where he has to give up his goalscoring massively.

I agree.

It was just a small dig at Ronaldo's style of play(see my post after that).

Same over the top of defence balls across to Neymar and Alba, cutting inside defenders and possibly another couple of nutmegs, a few more throughballs and usual dribbles. Then if lucky some amazing goal or an assist. It's a routine now, yet defences haven't been able to do much about it.
When you put it that way... Can't argue that it is getting repetitive now (same with Ronaldo)

So who is leading the race for Ballon d'Or this year? In all of their 8 wins the player that has made it the furthest in CL (or lost by the least margin if eliminated at the same point) has gone on to win it. Don't know how much of that the voters take into account but at the moment Ronaldo should be clear favourite to reduce the gap to 5-4. If he wins the CL or the Euros (need a miracle with that team) then he has won it already regardless of what Barca do in the league.

Are there stats about the average distance they cover per game? I suppose that Ronaldo runs at least 2 km more than Messi every single game.

Shows how football can change quickly. 4 weeks ago, the ballon d'or was heading to a no contest. Even talks that Ronaldo won't be on the three-man shortlist.
If Madrid wins it, he will win it.

Yes, because he's a much better athlete.

When you got two players scoring fifty or more a season regularly, it's a subtle difference that could shift the balance one way or another. Just three weeks ago @FCBarca was boasting how Messi is just coming into red hot form at the right time and he was scoring stunners and assisting people blindfolded (gifs galore in his thread and la liga game week threads just a few weeks ago... Now some on the caf is saying he's been average this season) and it looked like he had a point.

But then el clasico happened and lacklustre games vs atletico in the cl happened and just like that we are reading Ronaldo has been "miles better this season".

with both in major decline and for all
intents and purposes, finished, shouldn't there be a new rivalry?

It depends on what happens in the next month and the summer. Anyway, when it comes to Ballon D'Or, I think it should be Ronaldo vs Suarez, with a shot for Griezmann (especially if they win UCL, or who knows, UCL + La Liga + Euros).

Based on this season, Messi doesn't deserve to be in top 3, even if he is the best player of all time. You cannot flop when it matters most, gets outscored and out-assisted by a player of your team who also plays better in important matches and then hope to win the Ballon D'Or.

Knowing FIFA, it will be Messi again with also an another honorary award for Pele.

Based on this season, Messi doesn't deserve to be in top 3, even if he is the best player of all time. You cannot flop when it matters most, gets outscored and out-assisted by a player of your team who also plays better in important matches and then hope to win the Ballon D'Or.

Why do people come to these hasty conclusions all the time? up to about 3 weeks ago, Messi was actually averaging a higher goal output than his 2012 record breaking year. Barcelona were cruising to a league title and seemed impossible to stop in the CL. So in 3 weeks all the sudden all of that goes out the window and he isnt Balon D'or worthy? Never mind the fact that its a calendar year thing.

It's nice that you point at others for making such claims. Remember this beauty from a few weeks ago?

Messi and supporting cast are going to take care of this lot. Can't wait for Muller and co, top players in their own right, feel like 5th tier players again when Messi toys with them.

Time to get their memories refreshed.

You're losing your touch, football professor ;). I guess it wasn't the time to refresh memories after all, Messi missed his chance to make Müller feel like a 5th tier player again.

If Messi wins the league + Copa and Ronaldo wins the CL, who is more likely to win?

Probably Ronaldo, especially if he breaks his CL record. There is a reason why nobody else has scored 15 + goals in a CL campaign. It's extremely difficult.

Did you not read the "and it looked like he had a point" part? I was agreeing with the claim and I disn't foresee fatigue setting in so dramatically in the business end of the season. A fully fit messi indeed makes Müller an ok player at best.

I did. Still think it's funny how you specifically named someone else when you were on the forefront of it yourself.

I named fcbarca because he is the barca fan on here so probably has watched them (and followed his players) more than a United supporter...

Some people remember only last weeks game so if Ronaldo or Messi have a bad game then they are in decline.

It's not only that. They have dominated football for so long, nearly a decade now, that people expect them to make way to some younger super star, e.g. Neymar.

Ronaldo can win WC as well and he still wont be even close to Messi. Not sure which i enjoy more this days, Ronaldo performances or his fanboys....

The bitterness is real. It is understandable given Ronaldo just cemented his legacy by helping Portugal to their first ever major title but Messi bottled every final he was in and retired.
