He's gradually lost acceleration every year since he bulked up. He's still very fast, at least faster than anyone in Man Utd's squad at the moment.

Is he really though? Valencia is extremely quick when he actually runs, wouldn't be surprised if he was faster than Ronnie.

Yeah, I'm 80% sure he's still quicker than Tony Vroom.

Valencia is probably still rapid. We'd see it if he didn't slow down to process what the hell is happening around him.

Phil Neville & Savage: " Ronaldo is far better at set-pieces".

Lineker: "He scored just one goal from set-pieces this year."

Two bellends response: " I can't believe you think he is not better at set-pieces" - even though their main case for Ronaldo in general is that he has scored more goals this season.

The whole "he scored more goals this season" is stupid. He scored 3 more goals (61 vs 58) and he took like 7 penalties more, so when you take the penalties out Messi actually scored more goals this season, which makes this whole argument even more ridiculous.

I generally don't like the non-inclusion of penalties in these arguments, because they do still have to be scored, but it doesn't matter for this argument: Messi also contributes a lot more to Barca's overall play and is a much better footballer overall, while still matching Ronaldo's goals tally.

Really doesn't, b/c taking penalties out is in itself a lot more ridiculous thing to do, so it doesn't in any way make the "more goals" argument any more stupid than it already is. Not that I argue that the more goals Ronaldo scored makes him the better player, because it simply doesn't.

Well, if they took roughly the same number of penalties and one of them missed more than the other then it's fair, but not when one of the players has taken 7-8 more penalties than the other (most of which weren't even won by him).

It's ok if he has scored 10-15 more goals in the season, then you say even if you take the penalties out he's still scored more, but not when he only score 3 more goals, and took 7-8 penalties more, you just can't say he was a better goal scorer this season. At best it's a tie.

That's Phil Neville. Manchester United first team coach in 2013/14.

2 former England strikers who are doing a great impression of the Messi fans in this thread, refusing to listen and downplaying "in the air" as Ronaldo being taller, but not "dribbling" as Messi being shorter.

I think most sane people just realise that being an exquisite dribbler is one of the hardest and most aesthetically pleasing things in football. Heading the ball isn't and never will be, thankfully.

Next we'll be debating why people prefer Messi's passing to Ronaldo's stepovers.

Maybe Ronaldo being a much better dribbler before despite his height "handicap" has something to do with it.

Phil Neville: "Does he use both feet like Ronaldo??!!"

Goals with weak foot this season (in CL and La Liga): Messi 17 - 7 Ronaldo.

:wenger:

yes, i was wondering if Neville watche messi at all, and you dont need to see him play, you can take that info from any webb page about footie

Phil Neville is a terrible pundit and he comes across as naive in every interview he give.

It's one of those where all the facts, figures say one thing, but then people just say something blindly and you present the facts and they come up with some crazy counter argument with no basis of rationality.

I'll never understand it.

In all seriousness - no, probably not, except in the CL knockout stages. Same with Savage. Someone on caf got it spot on in saying punditry is nothing more than a charity for ex players. I actually think Souness is one of the better ones and he's the same person who was proclaiming that Herrera does nothing except score the occasional goal, that's how awful the standard of punditry is.

Phil Neville was once in charge of coaching our first team, ensuring that they were fully prepared to take on the elite teams in the world.

That's because many players aren't capable of thinking, or analyzing a game, players like Gary Neville were great analysts and it's why he is probably the best pundit in my opinion.

Gary Neville is a rarity in punditry, he doesn't sit there and repeat facts like Martin Tyler. Nor does he sit there and live within the caged walls of English football and not know players outside of the league or the teams he supports.

I think even people like Lineker knows that football is also an art form in some ways, he sees a player who is head and shoulders above everyone else, as he put it "Messi makes world class players like Aguero look ordinary" and it's true.

With the exception of Gary Neville and him being able to analyse I think there's not really many I can think of who are like him, Gary can see beyond his bias too and actually state what he feels is best he said this year "Barcelona make me think differently about football" and he's right.

The best analysts in football are coaches like Ancelotti, Guardiola, Mourinho they aren't pundits.

Has Messi ever scored 5 goals in a single La Liga match?

Don't think so.

Has Ronaldo ever won man of the match without scoring?
Probably not.

Ronaldo always starts the season off in better form, goalscoring form anyway. it's the big matches that they will be ultimately br judged on and it's always Messi dominating them.

Has Ronaldo ever won man of the match without even playing well?

That's a better question. Both shit questions though mind you.

When Messi comes on in a moment and makes a decisive goal or assist in one of the toughest games of the season that Barca don't look like winning it will mean more than Ronaldo's 5 earlier and that my friends is the difference.
