Absolutely. The likes of Giggs , Henry and Kaka will be remembered big time so of course Ronaldo will.

Pete was just wumming.

I think that's exactly what pete meant. Henry, Kaka, Ronaldo will be remembered much the way great players are.. but Messi will be remembered as the standout of this generation.

Ronaldo will fade from memory - these will just be the Messi years.

In order to be truly great, you have to have a great rival. The last decade will be remembered in terms of the rivalry, when one is spoken of the other will be mentioned -- a bit like Senna/Prost and Nedal/Federer.

I know. But there are others who might genuinely believe that. I mean in a world where people find dumb ways to downplay the genius of messi, i am sure there are many who thinks the same about Ronaldo.
I think they're mentally children if they think that way. Ronaldo will be remembered as a great footballer.

I think Ronaldo will have a much higher standing than that. Not as high as Messi but higher than those you mention.

Kaka is someone who could genuinely be forgotten and slip between the cracks.

I won't remember Ronaldo in years to come unless someone brings him up in conversation.

I always think of him as a self obsessed footballer who stands for everything that football shouldn't stand for.

He tries to make himself bigger than the team and wants the team to play for him every single time.

Doesn't help his team like he should and people judge him purely on goals and nothing else and when there are people claiming he is one of the best of all time I just have to laugh.

He is one of the best goalscorers of all time but as a player he isn't close to the greats.

Shit that means Don Bradman wasn't a great.

So what, you'll remember like 5 footballers you've seen and the rest will just fade into the background?

Don't agree with that. Seems a bit weird to bring up Ronaldo every time Messi is discussed.

That's like having to bring up Liverpool/United every time you talk about United/Liverpool.

Great players have their own standing too. They aren't defined and constrained by some silly rivalry the media has been obsessed with and bigged up to no end.

And yet, take a look at every Messi or Ronaldo thread on this forum. The other is always mentioned.
That's now, in the age of the one upmanship and media fuelled madness, while points are still there to be scored. That'll fade away eventually.

I'm not saying one can't exist without the other, just that in years to come it will be difficult to discuss either individual without mentioning the other -- it's the greatest individual rivalry in modern footballing history.

It's not even a real individual rivalry, like Federer Nadal who were genuinely competing with each other for honours all the time. That's for me a proper sporting rivalry. The football rivalry is barca Madrid, United Liverpool etc.

This "rivalry" is a little timid in comparison really. They aren't even similar players, they don't actually compete one on one, and play a team sport.

You obviously dislike him so you will never forget him...sorry

Phil the power Taylor. But anyway I'm not sure you can apply this logic to team sports.

I don't consider darts to be a sport, but I won't get in to all of that again.

I'm not so sure. I think that Ronaldo is probably obsessed with Messi and it must motivate him to be so dedicated. Similarly, Messi's form was dipping, he loses two Ballon d'Ors in a row and all of a sudden you hear about how he's changed his fitness regime, how he's taking everything a lot more seriously. I think it's only natural that there's a rivalry between them because the statistics tell us that they are only comparable to each other.

For a player that you wont remember, don't think highly of or seem to particularly like, you sure do post in his thread a lot.

Just like to see what people are saying about him. He has quite a high following so this thread is always being bumped on the home page.

I wasn't referring to this thread, I meant his own one. Why would you want to see what people are saying about him if you do not think he is worth remembering or find him particularly likeable? If you actually meant what you said, then you would not keep posting in his thread or keep mentioning him.

Always amazed me how rare a sight it was that Cristiano Ronaldo pushed himself to be the best he possibly could. Every footballer should have that sort of drive.

It's hard not to talk about him when he's brought up all the time around here. Was just giving my opinion on why i wont remember him as others were saying why he will/wont be remembered.

It is not hard to avoid posting about him. Just don't enter his thread (or threads involving him), type words or press post. Messi and Ronaldo are the only players I ever see you post about if I am being honest and I have never really noticed you in any other threads. Constantly posting about someone is the behaviour of a person who is obsessed with an individual or at least of someone who considers that individual to be very important. It is certainly not the behaviour of someone who will be quickly forgetting about that individual.

Well he's still playing football for a pretty big club right now so no i haven't forgot about him. I mostly talk about Messi and only bring up Ronaldo if there is a debate on him. I dont go out of my way to post about him if people are talking about him i am free to talk about him as well.

I dont know what your trying to accomplish here.

You're gonna struggle to forget him.

I just find it funny and silly that you say that you will not remember him and then post about him a lot. The Ronaldo thread has nothing to do with Messi, yet you post in there a lot and you used to do the same in his old one. Lots of players other than Messi play for big clubs, yet I do not see you posting about them as much as you do Ronaldo. If you think Ronaldo is not worth remembering then I take it that you will be forgetting a lot of players then as you post about them much, much less than you do about Ronaldo (apart from Messi of course).

This just simply isn't true. I hardly ever post in there.

You have around the same number as me and I support the team he plays for. If you did not think he was so important or worth remembering, then you would not make as much posts as I do in there. I admit that I talk about him a lot, he plays for the team that I support. You posted a lot in his old thread also.

I have no more than 10 posts in there since lets say the new year. I hardly ever posted in it even before that. It was always a thread i tried to avoid when i seen it so there is no way i have posted in there "a lot"

I think both Ronaldo and Messi will be forever linked, though Messi will be remembered as the greatest ever and Ronaldo will be remembered as one of the all-time greats.

To be honest Messi and Ronaldo rivary is one of the greatest in sports history, even Messi is clearly better. And to suggest that Ronaldo memory will fade is just kidding to yourself, no one will ever forget a football player who won 3 Ballon d'Or (beat Messi 3 times) and 4 Golden Shoe (more than any player in history) who is also probably the best goalscorer ever. Let's just be at least a little honest to yourself.

He won 2?

Second best goalscorer.;)

Funnily enough people seem to forget all the great goalscorers in the past when talking about these two. For some reason they're the greatest goalscorers by default.

It will be impossible to forget Ronaldo. These two have created and broken history.

They've literally changed our perceptions of a players ability... They've created a ranking for themselves that no one else can attain.
