Argentina were in 3 of the last 4 finals.
The quality is very poor in copa América and that’s not much of a debate.
Wales probably makes the semi finals in the copa.
Croatia possibly final etc.
Even Brazil isn’t really that good compared to European teams.
In reality Messi should have multiple copa América trophies there is not enough competition to only have 1 win.
In the end of the day Messi was able to tie Ronaldo in international trophies so well done to him.
Granted a win for Portugal was much more historic granted it was the first EVER and Portugal were a non factor for years before Ronaldo came into the fold.

the quality in euro 2016 was just as bad from Portugal’d side. And Ronaldo has been getting knocked out by South American sides

They also pushed France very hard in the 2000 semis while running through the group of death that year, they've had strong foundations of talent since the turn of the millennium, maybe except a few years.... in which oddly, they actually won a tournament

Ultimately, I feel like both of them blew their opportunities to win the World Cup.
2006 could have been Portugal's year. 2014 Argentina's year. But they didn't show up in the games that mattered most. And in 2022 they will be too old for that...

in fairness they were both underdogs (Argentina lost di maria and Germany were favoured) and Portugal weren’t expected to go all the way in 2006
Portugal were a bit tame in 2006, and Argentina were oddly a much much better team with massive talent... but some muddling decisions cost them. As genuine starters, I don't think either player has had a 'true' chance of, there's no way I've seen Portugal or Argentina are outright favourites since 2008... which is why they've both won and/or made finals by playing the way they did, and not in the way they'd like too.
Maybe they would have gone further if there was a better plan to stop Zidane... but well, it is what it is.
Messi's best World Cup was actually 2010, unfortunately in the Germany game the tactics were wrong.
Ronaldo was the best player on the pitch against France in the 2006 World Cup semi-finals. He created what was probably Portugal’s best chance of the game where he fired a FK at Barthez that came to Figo for a simple nod into the net. However, Figo somehow inexplicably headed over. It was a tight game that was decided by an Henry dive for a penalty that of course Zidane converted.
Messi had a good tournament and deserved to win it. But you seem to be completely ignoring the fact that Ronaldo is 90-120 minutes away from the golden boot in this Euros, scoring against the likes of France and Germany, and competing with Benzema, Kane, Lewandowski, Lukaku. At 36 years old.
Ronaldo scored or assisted 6 of his teams 9 goals at Euro 16. The Euros also ofcourse had one more round than the Copa. Not to mention, Croatia, Poland, Wales & France were all better than Bolivia, Colombia and Brazil.

over half his goals were penalties though which isn’t to say he wasn’t good in this years euros but it was mostly from the penalty spot
Because he took the penalties. Bruno would have scored all 3 if he took them which would mean Ronaldo would have scored or assisted 3 of 9. Granted he did score the penalties so he obviously has them goals on his tally but don't act like other players in his team wouldn't have converted them.

Argentina have literally NEVER BEATEN Brazil in Brazil in a competitive fixture, and they had a day's less rest, after slogging past Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador and Colombia in extremely physical games. There is no comparison at all to anyone who watched the matches. But then, that's the entire basis of this debate, isn't it? Ronaldo fans keep trying to change the scope of the argument, trying to find one specific stat that favours their guy. This was the one actual thing they had over Messi, and now it's gone.

Nope, he doesn't. He doesn't hold any Copa records. (Maybe assists but those weren't historically recorded)
No player in the history of the Copa has had more goals and assists in a single tournament than Messi who has done it twice now.

Winning La Copa América is immense. People think it's a crap summer tournament because Brazil dominated it for most of the 90's and 00's, but this is the third title for Argentina in 100 whooping years. The last one was in 1993. Many young football fans weren't even born in 1993.
Other than Germany and Italy, the rest of the European countries would struggle to even reach the semis.

That stat is right, but you need to see how was the Cup in their first 30 years or so. Uruguay has 15 Cups as well, but they played tournaments with 4 or 6 teams at the beginning, it's a little ridiculous. And many were played in consecutive years haha.
In 1975 the Cup started to be played with all 10 countrys that played in this year's Cup. This would be the 3rd CA for Argentina since then.
