Because he took the penalties. Bruno would have scored all 3 if he took them which would mean Ronaldo would have scored or assisted 3 of 9. Granted he did score the penalties so he obviously has them goals on his tally but don't act like other players in his team wouldn't have converted them.
Ronaldo didn’t score a single penalty at Euro 16 and Bruno wasn’t in the squad. What are you even talking about?

I was comparing them at the respective stages they met in the tournament so Brazil would be comparable to France as that’s who portugal met in the final and are stronger.

Columbia and Uruguay aren’t better than those versions of Croatia and Poland. The former dismantled Spain in the group stages and made the WC final just 2 years later. The latter finished on the same points with a strong Germany in the groups. No way Columbia and current Uruguay are better than those teams were.

If we are going by two year rules we can Uruguay beat Portugal 2 years after Portugal won their cup. And that Spain wide was COMFORTABLY the worst Spain side of the last 15 years. Crostia and Poland were painfully mediocre in 2016. Portugal had an insanely easy bracket, won just one or two matches in 90 minutes and the one tough team they faced they had the jammiest win in a title match in 20 years. And Brazil on their own soil were more dominant than 2016 France on theirs. Portugal had the easier bracket for sure compared to this year’s Argentina and Argentina looked far more deserving than Portugal did at any point in 2016.

Ok so good job to Messi to tie with CR7 regarding continentals (1 level below the World Cup).

The ball is on CR7’s court to tie Messi in the next world cup, to at least get to the final of the World Cup or even win it with some luck. The current Portugal squad is amongst the top 5/10 in the world , he might be able to do it, if he plays in it.

They have underachieved in the last 3 world cup after finishing 4th in the 2006 one.

No matter how average you claim those teams to be, no way were they worse than Columbia and Uruguay (who are also painfully average). Croatia at least had some great players in their ranks like Modric, Rakitic and Mandzukic. And Poland were a good team that tournament. No idea what made them painfully average or worse than Columbia. And are you saying this current Brazil team is stronger than 2016 France? Because I strongly disagree. Not in the attack or midfield. This Brazilian team just has Neymar as a weapon in comparison to that french side.

Except that they are. You can disagree as much as you want. If isn't going to make you any less nonsensical.

Comparing Poland to Columbia is a joke and comparing any of the teams that Ronaldo faced in the 2016 euros (excluding France because his teammates won it without him contributing) to Brazil is equally laughable.

Glad Messi ended this debate.

748 goals

315 assists

35 trophies

57 freekicks

54 hattricks

50 league goals in a season

73 goals all competitions in a season

91 goals in a year

30 or more club goals in last 13 seasons

8 Pichichi

6 European Golden Shoe

6 Ballon d'Or

6 FIFA Best Player

1 World Cup Golden Ball

2 UEFA Best Player

35 titles (some of the highlights are his 10 La Liga titles (vs Ronaldo’s mere 2 La Liga titles, 4 CL titles, one Copa America).

And as far as Ballon D’Or in 2021 is concerned: Messi is at 47 G+A in the calendar year 2021 for club and country. Trophies: Copa del Rey and Copa America.

Ronaldo not on that level in his statistical output. Both won their country’s respective Cup, but Messi also edge Ronaldo with his Copa America (in which very importantly Messi was the top scorers; top assistmaker AND deservedly awarded best player for the whole tournament).

Messi in 2021 has better stats and more trophies compared to Ronaldo so far.

Messi has the statistical output and trophies to win his 7th Ballon D’Or. Ronaldo won’t come close. He can’t beat the first trophy with Argentina-narrative.
Not a chance. Only Lewa will have a chance with his historical goal scoring in the Bundesliga, but I don’t think even he can’t top Messi in 2021 because of the stats of Messi AND Copa America triumph.

Lewandowski is going to be a thorn, but Messi has clearly been the best player on the planet this year. I don't think he should get robbed just because Lewandowski was robbed last year.

A 7th balón d'or would be fitting for the man who just made history.

And you have absolutely nothing to back up or prove that they are. I gave reasons why they weren’t as weak or weaker than the teams you’re comparing them to. Also, I didn’t say any of those teams were stronger than Brazil bar France if you re-read my post. Finally, I don’t see how Messi ended the debate. They both have an international trophy without contributing much in the final. Whoever thought Ronaldo was the GOAT still thinks he’s the goat. Ditto Messi.

Neither do you. Your last sentence is axiomatic and puerile. Those who think McGuire is the GOAT will continue to think he's the goat no matter what.

What does that have to do with the fact that Messi just made history and out up the greates individual performance in Copa history which puts him odds on to a get a 7th balón d'or which extends his own world record?

Ronaldo made history too by winning with Portugal. Messi winning the copa doesn’t put him ahead in the GOAT debate for me. Ronaldo also became the international goal record holder this year, is still the all-time world top scorer, all-time EURO topscorer, all-time CL topscorer, etc amongst a host of other records. And yeah Messi was overall the best player in the tournament but his poor performance in the final makes the idea that it was the best ever showing in copa history sound hyperbolic to me especially considering the teams Argentina played before finally meeting Brazil.

Messi winning the Copa puts him at 1b to Maradona's 1a. He, Pele, and Maradona were the top 3 in most neutrals' eyes before Messi made history. And now that he has, he has a stronger claim for the greatest ever.

Just waiting for the 7th balón d'or. Retiring with the most balón d'or, most European Golden boots, and the highest peak of his generation would really be something.

It’s funny some of you keep claiming the debate has ended, yet keep debating about it. How is it going to end if you lot keep posting it here and debating with those who doesn’t agree.

You might want to look up the word 'debate' because you're misusing it.

As far as my posting here, it's a thread. That's what we are here for. Why are you constantly following me around anyways, every time I post about Messi?

Like I said many times before, I think Messi and Ronaldo are the same in terms of greatness/quality. I see them as equals. And by this I also mean in the NT, Ronaldo is amazing for Portugal and Messi is amazing for Argentina. They are a solution to their NT and not the culprits of anything.

But I really can't stand when people come up with straight blindness when analysing things, ignoring facts and making arguments out of either wrong or extremely biased points. And this happens against Messi but happens mostly against Ronaldo which is a much hated character for several reasons.

That Croatia that faced Portugal in 2016, 3rd place, met us because they had beaten Spain in the group stages and ended 1st in its group. This is the same team and players that in the 2018 WC would reach the final and batter Argentina 3-0 in the group stages. They played really well but our bus was able to fend them off.

And still complaining about Portugal 2016 run while exalting Argentina this year. To go past the group stage they finishing 1st in the group, where actually they simply needed to be 4th out of 5 teams, then they faced Ecuador and Colombia before the final. I repeat, before the final Argentina got in the knockouts Ecuador and Colombia.
Again, I'm not blind so Argentina has no fault of the tournament rules and they got what they deserved as that's what the rules say. So one can't blame Argentina for this run. Still, some people bring great fuss about Portugal in 2016, but are now ignoring their run to the final. And in the final they were outplayed by Brazil, just like Portugal vs France in 2016. But they won, deservedly, because who scores more is who wins. You can't be serious now saying Argentina (or Messi) is the best now UNLIKE Portugal (or Ronaldo) in 2016 because it's the exact same situation.

Messi was the best scorer and assister of the competition? Yes, and he deserves that.
Ronaldo was the best scorer of the competition? Yes, but people say he doesn't deserve and Messi was better.
Well, Messi has 5 goals and 4 assists in 7 games, Ronaldo got 5 goals and 1 assist in 4 games, and Ronaldo faced France, Germany and Belgium in 3 of those games.
So Ronaldo still contributed more goals per game/minute than Messi but the narrative now shifted to "Messi did win it and Ronaldo choked" despite many people going against this narrative and downplaying Ronaldo in 2016 (still the silver boot with 3 goals and 3 assists).
Also ? at Ronaldo won the final because of his teammates when Messi did little vs Brazil, missed a sitter and still is getting lauded as amazing. He does deserve it like I said, because I'm not blind, so I'm happy that his team stood up and he finally won.

I could be mean and say that yet again Messi failed to score against Brazil, basically he still has to score against any big team in official games. He now scored against Chile, in the group stages, and that is now the most difficult opponent he scored against in a final stage of a big tournament. In a group stage where 4 of 5 teams qualify.

Huh? Did you mistaken me as someone else? I don’t even know who you are? It’s first time I could remember talking to you here? What makes you think I constantly following you every time you post about Messi!?

Anyway, back to the topic:

“Debate by definition means a formal discussion on particular topic in which opposing arguments are put forward.”

So the question is, did you never have an argument with someone who is on opposing view regarding Ronaldo vs Messi?

If the answer is no, then congratulations, you finally find peace with the debate, really no need for you to post any more here when comparing and discussing the merits of these 2 players. You can either post at Messi thread or Ronaldo thread when you want to discuss about them, without messing around with the comparison to claim whoever is better or greater… that’s actually a good thing! Stay away from the toxic!

And since the debate has ended for you already, I am sure you don’t mind me saying Ronaldo is GOAT as he has clearly more CL trophies, more career goals, more club goals, more international goals, more CL goals, more tournament goals and more all time records than anyone, including Messi, which I assume it’s perfectly fine for you not to debate this. You can now stay away from all of that!

Columbia vs Poland, 3-0 at the 2018 World Cup.

Sure it is not a be all end all argument when comparing Columbia and Poland, but it is probably one of the only few ways one can compare. Way better than the “I say you say” method our Portuguese friends like to use.

How about another way, the FIFA ranking. Well in May 2016, Columbia was ranked 4th of the FIFA rankings whereas Poland was ranked 27th.
In May 2021 before the Euro and Copa, Columbia was ranked 15th whereas Poland was ranked 21st. Yet another better method to compare versus the “i say you say” method

argentina played just about every good team Copa had to offer while Portugal avoided 90% of the good teams in euro 2016. It’s not even close. Plus Argentina looked FAR more convincing in this Copa while Portugal felt like highway robbery and one of the jammiest NT wins of the last 25 years.

Finally someone brings facts from the other side of the argument.

Let's check european vs south american results at WC 2018 to paint a clearer picture then:

Argentina 1-1 Iceland
Brazil 1-1 Switzerland
France 1-0 Peru
Croatia 3-0 Argentina
Colombia 3-0 Poland
Uruguay 3-0 Russia
France 4-3 Argentina
Uruguay 2-1 Portugal
Colombia 1-1 England (England won on penalties)
France 2-0 Uruguay
Belgium 2-1 Brazil

Europe definitely has better teams than south America overall, and Belgium over Brazil was one of the jammiest results of that World Cup. But having said that, Portugal had the easiest bracket for any euro winner of the last 25 years. Argentina’s was tougher this year and they didn’t really get to avoid anyone like they had in last copa’s. Portugal avoided so many of the big teams thanks to their bracket

Seriously?

Ecuador & Colombia? 2 teams who qualified with 3 and 4pts respectively after 4 group matches?

Just because you Messi brigade repeat something again and again, it doesn't make it true.

Portugal beat 2 teams (without needing penalties) that would go on to contest the WC final just 2 years later on their run to winning the Euro.

Pay attention. They also played Brazil, Uruguay, chile and Columbia.

so yes

it is absolutely true, and whatever happens two years later is irrelevant when Croatia was in an extremely easy side of their bracket as well. Portugal over grande was the most undeserving result in a NT final of the last 20 years. It was absolutely a cupcake run for Portugal

They played Brazil in the final, Portugal played France in 2016.

The other teams they played in a group stage where FOUR qualify out of FIVE (which also included the useless at sea level Bolivia).

Btw, it's Colombia, Columbia is a US city/clothing brand.

The same Croatia who qualified top of their group after beating Spain?

What happened 2 years later is absolutely relevant, the core of the side of both France & Croatia were very similar to the ones that contested the WC final.

Messi bottled another final with Argentina, just that this time Di Maria bailed him out.

much like Ronaldo bottled many finals before Ramos, Eder, Benzema and bale bailed him out countless times.
Messi has been player of the tournament multiple times in NT while Ronaldo zero.

and euro let’s nearly everyone advance. 3/4 teams. Portugal were the jammiest NT of the last 25 years. Everyone knows this. Didn’t even need Ronaldo to win a final, he was rubbish in nations league final as well. Messi was poor in this years final but on average he’s comfortably had better NT finals than Ronaldo who was always a ghost for Portugal on the biggest stage.

and that Spain side was AWFUL. And Uruguay knocked Portugal at the following tourney that Included South American teams.

and it’s irrelevant what Croatia did 2 years later, they were a painfully mediocre side. Another poster posted above why they were mediocre and Argentina inarguably had a tougher path this year than Portugal who were extremely jammy

Which one final has Messi played well with Argentina? The ones where he bottled the penalties? or the time they beat Chile without him in the group stage and duly lost with him in the final?

There we go again with you Messi brigade and what everyone knows or don't, somehow in your narrow little minds, everyone agrees on everything. Argentina won the final inspite of Messi just 2 days ago.

Ronaldo has been topscorer for Portugal at every single tournament he's featured in except 2006, yet somehow he's been a ghost.

2016 Croatia was painfully mediocre cos they lost to Portugal, 2 years later they became an amazing side to beat Messi & co 3-0?

The Copa group stage was simply a pointless exercise, any team drawn in a group where 4 our of 5 qualify (together with sea-level Bolivia) were in the knockout stage already. Then they beat Ecuador who are probably worse anyone Portugal had to overcome in 2016 knockout stage. After that, needing penalties to beat a Colombia side without their star player.

Well done to Argentina on beating Brazil in the final, but it required as much luck as Portugal beating France did.

All of them, you are ambarrasing yourself, more.

Ronaldo would've won England the final.

Would Messi?

Your move Atheists

In a penalty shootout you definitely want Ronaldo in your team and Messi is also a no brainer considering England had to rely on a 19 year old who hasn't taken a single penalty in senior football. :wenger:

Then again Englando would had still lost with both of them in the team as Southgate would had Ronaldo and Messi coming into the game until the 120th minute and have them take the 10th and 11th penalty if it came to that.
