Quite telling that the poll still favors Messi 65/35 despite the trashing Barca received yesterday.
Shows you how people can spot Messi's genius even when his teammates are letting him down.

That "average game by his standards" was the best performance I ever seen from Messi he dominated City that night what the hell are you talking about?

Messi has to create and score for this Barca team giving him an impossible job. On a night like last night when he's not quite at it Barca just crumble with nobody else to step up.

I've seen it too many times over the last 4 years he has one quiet game and Barca are eliminated in the knock outs

I was speaking about the game at the etihad. The reverse game at Camp Nou was majestic the game in manchester was no way one of his best games.

And point still stands that, he has been bailed out plenty of times by teammates. He didn’t play past the QF for his first CL trophy.

EDIT: What about when Ronaldo and Real were being perennially eliminated from CL semis under Mourinho? Ronaldo was at his absolute peak in those years and regularly performed to a good level but don’t remember anyone bailing him out.

The poll was shut for like 12 hours.

Whoever closed the poll is clearly a Messi fanboy and just trying to troll people on here who prefer Ronaldo.

you probably think it was a win-win scenario for you, watching Liverpool losing and if they actually win it and go to the final, then you're left with "at least Messi won't win it". but you do realize there's good chance now that you might see both Liverpool winning the whole thing and Messi winning the ballon d'or regardless? it's actually the worst scenario for you.
Not at all, my top priority in football other than seeing United winning is seeing Liverpool losing - Barca losing come a very distant 2nd. I was definitely hoping for a Messi masterclass last night.

Would I have preferred Messi getting sent off and Suarez get a goal in a 4-1 defeat? Yes, but Liverpool going through is the last thing I wanted to see.

Liverpool winning the CL will be terrible. But Messi to win Ballon D'or after last night? Possible only if he stops bottling with Argentina.

Who do you suggest then?

He's clearly been the best player on any football field this season, and one game, in which he wasn't even that bad, shouldn't change that opinion.

Who deserves it then? If Liverpool win the double, then Van Dijk may win it.

Otherwise - the best player of the season is still Messi at the moment. A loss to Liverpool when the whole team capitulated changes nothing only to Messi-dislikers.

Again, the point is it is awarded for the calendar year, not the season. Messi has been the best performer in La Liga so far in 2019, but that really isn't enough. There are more than 6 months to go this year and a lot could change.

At the moment I'd say a few players are in with a shout after last night.

It really depends on the summer, if Argentina win the Copa, Messi would be favorites, but if they don't, we could see another undeserved winner like last year.

Also. Mods. Please ban everyone who used the word "three peat" or "3 peat" in posts higher up this page.

This place has to have standards, dammit...
3 peat is a phrase. 3.peat is something Ronaldo did. 3 peat is something Messi will probably never do.

When Messi has a quiet game he has nobody to bail him out and is knocked out of the CL, there is nobody to make chances for him he has to keep dropping deep to pick up the ball and try to make something happen

When Ronaldo had a quiet game he had Modric, Ramos and Marcelo to step up and put him in the next round.
Ugh that poor bastard I weep for him I truly do. He has this dam pub team to play with don't you see:wenger: Ronaldo has constantly been the one to put his team in the next round.

You would not have won 3 CLs in a row with Messi imo, the type of player you needed was Ronaldo, one who finishes chances and scores tough goals.

Conversely that's exactly the type of player Barca need atm, he'd have burried at least one of their chances yday. Ronaldo and Messi feeding each other would actually be a scary thought

Ultimate wet dream. Just imagine Messi and Ronaldo on the same team....

Ronaldo would legit score 80+ goals in all competitions. Messi would probably score less but finish the season with 50+ assists and 50+ goals. Also it would take Messi off pens and Ronaldo off freekicks which would suit them both.

I seriously doubt that. maybe if Liverpool do the double they decide to give it to VDV, otherwise no. if City wins the title and Liverpool wins the CL only, which is the most likely scenario, then I think it's more or less settled. if by any chance Spurs or Ajax manage to win CL, then it will be even less doubt about that.

Messi will end the current season winning double if they beat Valencia and being top scorer both in la liga and CL. if it was Ronaldo with CL vs current Messi, fair enough. but Salah with only 4 CL goals and VDV? I doubt it. there's just no player who could compete with this season's Messi and he's likely to continue playing the same way after the summer.

it's similar to 2014 world cup golden ball. Germany were the best team but you can't simply give it to Muller or Hummels just because they play for them. so they just gave it to best individual that got furthest. Robben would have most likely won it before any of German players as well if Holland beat Argentina.

It's a joke that the poll was opened when Ronaldo went out, but closed when Messi did. IMO the last 5 years have made it clear that Messi is the better player, but Ronaldo is the greater player.

The reaction in this thread confirms some Ronaldo fans on here are totally devoid of logic? When Ronaldo last face this same Liverpool team what did he do? Nothing, he was bailed out by Bale and Karius put simply, he had less dribbles less touches key passes and goals than Messi.

They probably would have considering Messi is just as good of a finisher.

And yet I don't think Ronaldo would have been performing this badly in the return leg.
This is 2nd year in a row where Barca completely wastes a good win at home by flopping in the return leg

Why? Did you not see him in the final? Messi was good, his influence was a lot bigger than Ronaldo mustered last season against the same team z

I'm looking at things from a general perspective and Ronaldo has mostly performed better than Messi in the knockout stages. Of course some games will always be mentioned where he play badly like the final but overall ? I'd rather have Ronaldo away from home to get a vital away goal.
I will always prefer Messi as a footballer though

But it’s not same circumstances and again Ronaldo will get credit for last years Cl but he did nothing against the same team in the final, that Messi scored two goals against and created more than a few chances.

Maybe the comparison should be with Suarez who scored last week, if he scored again this week that would be the sum of what Ronaldo normally does in knockout stages, but it’s in no way comparable to the magic we have seen from Messi, even last weeks leg shouldn’t have been saved if not for the little man.

Your response is incomplete, just like Messi's performance in the tie

In all seriousness though, he has a history of not finishing the job under pressure in the last few years.

When looked over the two legs of the tie the best time by a mile went through.

Messi produced a moment of magic to score from the free kick, and scored another. Put a great chance on a plate for his striker in the return leg to kill the tie, but the lines were fluffed. Produced the only moments of creativity for his team the rest of the game.

The better team went through, it is a team sport. Maybe a lesson for all in this debate. Same with Ajax and Ronaldo.

I'm only talking about return legs away from home. It is a very specific set of circumstances in which I'd choose Ronaldo over and over again.
Why are you talking to me about the final of last season ? He was great in the first leg but that was in his Nou Camp home. Away from home, he struggles much more than Ronaldo

 Are people still crying about the poll being closed? I guess the Ronaldo fanboys are built in his image: prolific, whining drama queens.

The expectations for Ronaldo and Messi are insane. In a team sport no individual decides the outcome every match. Maradonna was not god like in every match either.

Are player like luiz Ronaldo must have been one of the most averages players ever since he won mainly feck all in his club career.

And this 3 peat only applies to the CL right? Just checking.
No but a lot harder to do in the CL. He has done it in EPL too which is harder then La Liga if that was the point you were trying to make.

Ronaldo would legit score 80+ goals in all competitions. Messi would probably score less but finish the season with 50+ assists and 50+ goals. Also it would take Messi off pens and Ronaldo off freekicks which would suit them both.
That all sounds about right and they would probably win every competition until they both retired.

Messi = BOAT
Ronaldo = GOAT

We’ll see what transpires the next few months. Messi is still the fav considering the random Copa timing, but there’s every chance he bottles it again given his record in the competition

He was in the winning team. The point is they didn’t need him to rescue the tie which Messi failed miserably last night.

If it's the Copa America you're talking about I honestly see no chance for Argentina to win that

If they won it, it would be a miracle but unlikely to happen

You do realise someone will reply to you saying "oh yeh Eto, Henry, Xavi, Iniesta, busquests, Neymar, Ibrahimovic are so much worse than Modric, Ramos and Marcelo. I'd much prefer the later 3 too..."
To which you'll have no response to apart from digging a deeper hole.
This is a common retort and done plenty of times before hand. Let's cut to the chase, you like Messi more than Ronaldo. It doesn't mean he's better, but it's just your preference and that is perfectly ok. But don't be dressing it up like you aren't biased in your decision making.

He was in the winning team. The point is they didn’t need him to rescue the tie which Messi failed miserably last night.

Obviously that is why Ronaldo has won every classico in history. Whenever the team Real Madrid have been behind Ronaldo has obviously scored a hattrick to win it. What a shit leader and player he would be if he didnt.

This is an hilarious excuse when Messi played in a better team than Ronaldo for 95% of his career. Lucky Ronaldo for having Eder instead of Higuain, Marcelo instead of Alves and Modric instead of Xavi. So lucky to be bailed out...

I guess Alves, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Neymar, Pique and Suarez must have been too in awe of the genius to have actually played a part in any of the Barcelona's big victories of the past decade.

It would be a miracle for Argentina to win Copa America? Did France, Spain and Germany turn South American without me noticing?

They're literally the second favourites to win it behind Brazil... what a miracle it would be
