Messi = BOAT
Ronaldo = GOAT

I don't think either is the GOAT. I prefer Ronaldo in almost every manner, but he isn't the GOAT to me either. I can see why why most prefer Messi, but he just doesn't do it for me.

“Miracle to win the Copa America” that is an exaggeration it is an easier and inferior competition to that of the euro as shown by the World Cup since about the 90s.

The euro is a much tougher competition then the Copa hence why no one really cares when there is a Copa america. I completely forgot it was this summer but I would never miss a euro.

Conversely that's exactly the type of player Barca need atm, he'd have burried at least one of their chances yday. Ronaldo and Messi feeding each other would actually be a scary thought

Not to mention, he’d add a whole other dimension to their attack as they’d actually have an outlet in the air to play crosses to since he’s almost unmatched in that category. Don’t think Barca attempted traditional wing play once in last nights game or tried to cross into the box apart from corners. With Ronaldo they would be much more unpredictable which would have Liverpool more shaky. Finally, no doubt he would have scored at the very least one of Alba, Suarez or Coutinho’s chances on his worst day (especially in this Comp.)

They don’t win the first leg 3-0 with Ronaldo

If it's the Copa America you're talking about I honestly see no chance for Argentina to win that

If they won it, it would be a miracle but unlikely to happen
Considering they are 2nd favs, it’s hardly going to be a miracle to win

Obviously that is why Ronaldo has won every classico in history. Whenever the team Real Madrid have been behind Ronaldo has obviously scored a hattrick to win it. What a shit leader and player he would be if he didnt.

Unless they have made some miraculous improvement from the World Cup last year then they have no chance, they are a very disjointed team and lack any sort of talent in midfield and defence

I would be shocked if they came close to winning it

Based on what? Ronaldo has proven he can be the ultimate opportunist and pull out wins out of the hat without his team being in control of the game and struggling.

This is an hilarious excuse when Messi played in a better team than Ronaldo for 95% of his career. Lucky Ronaldo for having Eder instead of Higuain, Marcelo instead of Alves and Modric instead of Xavi. So lucky to be bailed out...
:nono: Eder, scorer of goal, is one of the best players around

Higuain, misser of chance, is all that is wrong with the football world

Irrespective of your opinion on whether or not Messi's a bottle or not it's ultimately an incredibly bad faith argument against him from Ronaldo's supporters - they were quite happy to assert Ronaldo's superiority before 2015 when Messi was generally winning a lot more both domestically and in Europe.

He's taking the piss out of your comment Cal, surely you can see that.

Bookies may not always get it right, but to claim Argentina aren’t clearly ahead of all the other teams except Brazil is clearly a blinkered view

Well, he needs lessons on reading comprehension. Ronaldo is far more likely to rescue a tie does not mean Ronaldo can do it every single game.

Did I really need to spell that out?

And how did he do last year against Liverpool? He had Bale and Ramos finish the job

I guess Alves, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Neymar, Pique and Suarez must have been too in awe of the genius to have actually played a part in any of the Barcelona's big victories of the past decade.

It would be a miracle for Argentina to win Copa America? Did France, Spain and Germany turn South American without me noticing?

They're literally the second favourites to win it behind Brazil... what a miracle it would be

Uruguay are better than Argentina. The same Uruguay that thumped Portugal.

Point being that no 1 player consistently decides the outcome of major games and competitions. It's impossible in a 11 man team game. Maybe Pelé did, but that was before my time. Would you also say that Barcelona won the 09 CL final vs Man Utd because Messi scored and Ronaldo didn't? Or did it have something to do with the whole Barca team performing a level above united and Xavi and Iniesta absolutely dominating our midfield?

But no Ronaldo didn't score so he must have been shit and lacked leadership.

Unless you get Portugal's route where a team finishing third in the group stage can win the whole falling on the MUCH easier side of the bracket. No one outside of Portugal remembers that Euro fondly. It was ugly negative football all around.

We knew what he was capable of. We knew he was a mental beast that could deliver on the big stage. He proved it.

Indeed.

Speaking of Ronaldo and scoring in finals. First, he scored 3 goals from open play in 5 UCL finals. Not bad. Second, in order to win the final, you first need to reach it. Ronaldo was instrumental in Portugal’s progress to the Euro final (including in the SF) and has scored many important goals in Real routes to winning the 4 UCLs.

Yeah true

BS, Uruguay that knocked out your precious Portugal are comfortably better.

I think we can all agree though that CR7 was a superior CL record

I think everyone can agree that CR7 is the best champions league player of all time. Or at least the highest scoring. Messi isn't really all that far behind though.

Absolutely. CR7 is the greatest CL player of all time.

Messi is the greatest of all time.

Believe me many people remember it as it was a great competition as a whole.

He was awful in 2014, 2016, and 2018 Finals

What big stage is that? Messi was incredible in CL this year. One game where he was still Barca's best player doesn't change that.

As been said many times before, when Ronaldo doesn't show up his teammates always do, when Messi doesn't show up no one else for him does either.

Doubtful, there was nothing exciting about it outside of Iceland's Cinderella story.

World Cup 2018 on the other hand is a different story.

Absolutely. CR7 is the greatest CL player of all time.

Messi is the greatest of all time.
:lol::lol::lol: Never especially not after yet another choke fest which is beginning to be something of a norm for Messi. Listen he is the second best of his generation and that in itself is very impressive when you consider the fact that the guy he came up against was Ronaldo. He should be happy with that because he was able to keep up with Ronnie.

You do realize Ronaldo has “bailed out” his teammates at least triple the amount of times that they have helped him right? You do realize Madrid would not even sniff the CL semi final let alone the final without him right?

CR7 is a great player now, dont get me wrong. Top 5 of all time, basically Van Basten on steroids which is about the best compliment you can give to a forward.

But lets not get carried away here. Yesterday wasnt even a bad game from Messi. It was a mediocre/decent game from him combined with the worst ever career performances of players like Alba, Busquets, Coutinho, etc.

He was by far the best player of that semifinal, but Barcelona was by far the worst team.

I guess if you desperately need CR7 to be the better player, you can close your eyes and refuse to actually look at the games, and just say one is a bottler and the other one is a winner (when both had won pretty much the same), but to each their own, ive realized that its pointless discussing things like that in that thread.

People here conveniently ignore how Karius basically gifted the first goal on last year's CL, while yesterday Alisson blocked 6 shots created or attempted by Messi. Somehow, both those things combined make CR7 the better player.

Its a team game, and Messi has been by far the best player in the world this year. By far. His team just lost yesterday. What can he do about that 4-0 goal? Is it his fault that the Barca defense was completely distracted on that corner kick?

But hey, this is just the Messi vs Ronaldo thread, so some people will argue about that sort of stuff for thousands of pages. Messi will still win the Balon d Or anyway and will have another 3-4 years of playing at the highest level, so this debate will be even more onesided in a decade or two anyway.

And without Messi they don't even have a 3-0 lead in the first leg.

Ronaldo will be remembered as a good goal scorer, Messi will still be spoke about with a sense of wonder many many years from now.

Correction without the incredible misses by Liverpool they don’t have a 3-0 lead.

This is what history will say Messi lost 4 finals in a row AND then QUIT on his country because he has that weak mentality we all know about and that he choked 2 3-0 leads back to back seasons in a row. Messi will be remember for all the greatness he has done but people won’t forget that when the going got tuff Messi was not there and that will always be a dent on his career.

Ronaldo has shown no signs of slowing down either and I expect next season him to return to the 40s and more goal tally. In fact Messi won’t have a longer career then Ronaldo I would argue.

Honestly going in with a 3 goal lead mostly because of Messi it should have been settled there than. Massive kudos to Liverpool for doing the incredible, but Barca's defense should not have shipped 4 goals in a game this big. That kind of stuff is beyond Messi's ability.

I hope. Believe it or not, i get off my seat too whenever i see CR7 changing the outcome of a big match. I even like his selfish, "all about me" personality , it just fits him.

As i said, he is a legend far above some absolute legends of the game such as Ronaldo9, Ronaldinho, Zidane, etc.
