Messi the magician!

Disappearing when it matters most again !

Forever not a big game player

Probably will happen again this summer. Conmebol thought they'd host as many Copa as possible to let him win one eventually, but will probably end up see him crying again instead. :smirk:

Wait what? The poll gets re-opened when Messi has a stellar performance in a competition Ronaldo is out of and can do nothing to save his cause yet it gets closed when Messi and his team struggles and gets eliminated from said competition? That's some next level bias:lol:

Like I said. Intangibles, mental fortitude, “clutch” as much as you all hate that word, X factor, big game player ...what ever you want to call it It is just as valuable and important as talent and Ronaldo has it and Always has. Messi never had it he is mentally weak and not made for the big occasion. If you prefer pretty passes as dribbling good for you I prefer winning and I prefer a player will single handedly win me a tie. 1 goal down 2 goals down or 3 goals up makes no difference.

You must prefer going out in the quarter finals too then

If Suarez scores that chance at 1-0, we'd all hail Messi a genius for another glorious pass.

He's their only dangerous player. Criticizing him would be silly. He's not a defender.

ignore it, it's pure anger at this point.

A terrible night for United fans and some of you lot are complaining about a bloody poll. At least drop the facade...

Oh, I'm super disappointed in all the team, Valverde and Alba (again, like everytime we go out in the UCL) are the main culprits for another embarassing display.

But Messi isn't immune to criticism, he showed more teeth in the first leg, the game vs OL and so on, we know what we have with him. I don't expect him to pressure like Suarez, but watching him sulk and walk around as the castle crumbled around him... I thought this year he was determined to do everything on his hand to win the UCL, he said it himself, and in the last 10 minutes he did as much as he could with the ball, but football can also be played without it, and if there was 10 minutes where he could've gassed himself running in his career, it probably was tonight.

Agreed. He was rested at the weekend so there is no excuse for not pressing and sprinting to get hold of the ball. He waltzed around surrounded by players.

I know this thread is mental at the best of times but how can he be blamed for that tonight? Their defence was a joke and much like the Roma game it was clear that Valverde's intent was to sit in and just see the game out. There's nothing you can do when your team is set up like that and the opposition are focusing solely on you. I don't care if you're Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona or Pele.

Feels good that people finally see what I have been saying for god knows how long.

This, I tried to explain how Ronaldo has a bigger effect on games because he improves the winning rate more than Messi but they refuse to even contemplate the idea. The the the eye test...

It was his best knockout performances since 2015. Shouldn't blame him for what happened this year, but this is not a one year failure. It's 4 years now with an investment that's never been seen before. Barcelona's wage bill is nearly double of any other team on the planet. Winning this year's Champions League would have been the biggest achievement of his career by a mile...

When Barcelona conceded the 2-1 vs Lyon I saw a different Messi, a proper captain lifting everyone's spirits up. Tonight's second half was the same Messi that appeared in Rome last year, head down, hands on hips, no initiative... and it's nothing new. It simply can't happen. They can lose the match, but they can't lose it like they lost tonight. That was pathetic.

After a 3-0 home win with Ajax/Spurs waiting in the final and Madrid winning the past 3 European Cups in a row, this simply can never happen. He's the superstar, arguably the best player ever, he's the guy who gave the speech at the start of the season in front a full Camp Nou promising the fans they'd do everything in their power to win the Champions League. He did not keep that promise tonight.

I still think the fact Barcelona funnel their attacks to go through Messi stops them from reaching their full potential as a team. It puts an amount of pressure on Messi to perform that is simply not necessary with the other players they have. Even with the structural problems, they should have won the Champions League regardless. You can talk about tactics, goals, a player's ability, mistakes, etc.. but in this competition a team's mentality is just as important as everything else and Barcelona simply don't have it. When there's such a big difference between a team's home and away form it's obvious that there are mentality problems. They didn't need Xavi, Iniesta or Neymar, they missed Puyol more than all of those in the past 2 years.

I wonder if he temporarily retires from CL after today ?

:nervous:

Well, one of the mod felt the need to go all RAWKish and decided to come close the poll instead of cheering Messi on in that final minute.

Fot those saying blah blah blah I'd like to remind them that blah blah blah.

Ronaldo didn't even do anything tonight.

That's the most insane thing about this thread. Last week when Ronaldo wasn't even playing he became an inferior player because of something Messi did. Tonight Ronaldo is a superior player because of something Liverpool did.

I think some people are so focused on just these two guys that they forget they have 10 teammates and a manager out there that can all drastically effect the game.

Mate he wasn't even coming for the ball for the last 15 minutes. I still think he is the GOAT but this performance was abysmal.

Imagine Ronaldo letting Robertson slap his head while he's on the ground and not scoring the winner to show him who's boss.

I think Messi peaked in 2011-15 and CR in 2014-18. Equally great. Both with flaws and horrid nights.

Salah Ballon d'Or 2019 almost a certainty now.

If they go on to win it, it'll be van Dijk. Hype is incredibly strong like it was with Modric last year.

The funny thing is this is not the first time this has happen.. he has done this many of times but it gets brushed off because Messi.

Imagine Ronaldo let two 3 goal leads go while Messi won 3 CL in a row imagine the state of this forum

Closing the poll again is a brillaint wind up to be fair

Messi is just one Suarez or Alba not missing a sitter away from being good.

I'm glad to see Messi boys shut up for a bit

Only reason Barcelona ever had a chance against Liverpool was because of Messi. Almost single handedly gave a 3-0 lead to his team, and any elite team aspiring to be CL winners should have been able to hold on to that.

Hell, had Dembele not ruined the chance Messi set up for him on a plate on the last game, this could have been much different.

But again, Dembele missed, twice. Today Suarez, Coutinho and Alba messed up CLEAR chances that Messi set up for them again, 1 vs 1 against the keeper and nothing. On top of that, his team concedes 4 goals.

How is that Messi's fault? Barcelona wouldnt be near half the team they are if it werent for Messi. Poor tactics and the worst games ive seen from Alba and Busquets in all the years ive been watching them. But somehow its Messi's fault he didnt save his pathetic team after everything was against him, and a 10 man defense?

There's only so much one player can do, and Messi did it all. Great goals, great assists, passes across the 2 legs. But if his defense concedes 4 goals then really theres nothing much more he can do.

I can see it too tbh. Virgil might be in for a shout now.

Modric had a World Cup final with a huge underdog like Croatia as well as all the domestic success. I'd say Luka's case was far stronger than VVD's.
