I agree and I should of put a nail on it there but some things are hard not to reply too.

Nonetheless let’s all end it now. This is about football and 2 of the Goats só let’s keep it at that.

Im sure there are topics for us to discuss left and right trump and Obama gun control brexit and all these things.

What will it take for Messi to not win the Balon Dor this year? Liverpool double might result in it going to VVD, I guess? Or if Ajax win the thing maybe de Ligt will be in with a chance.

Really though, is there any doubt who the player of the season is so far?

Messi has been the best player in the would this season. There really is no one else who can hold a claim to being better neither in Liverpool or Ajax or spurs .

I cringed pretty hard on your own strawman/patting on your own back and the "Cristiano fans: silence again"...

If you use "what about abc" as an argument then it can be used again Messi or any other player too. So if you think Messi is better, just tell me why and I will use the exact same style of argument again you.

For what it worth, Messi is better for me but your way or arguing...

Okay, i'll do that then. Messi is better because he combines the following attributes:
He is arguably the greatest dribbler of all time.
He's one of the best final third passers of all time. He's one of the most creative players of all time.
He is currently one of the greatest goal scorers of all time. According to RSSC, he is currently 116 goals off the all time record of goals scored (Josef Bican). By the time he is finished, there is a real possibility that he will have become the greatest goalscorer of all time.
So he combines goalscoring, passing, creativity and dribbling all at a GOAT level.
How many players in history combine so many traits at a GOAT level? Pele was creative and passed well but is a notch behind Diego and Leo. Diego himself misses out on the goalscoring part (clearly has the other three). Similarly Cruyff.
Now we come to Cristiano. He has goalscoring at a GOAT level, but what other football attributes does he have at a GOAT level? Lets give him headers. The rest of his game is simply at a normal level, compared to the aforementioned. He doesn't compare to Leo as a player in the grand scheme of things.

Argument made. Now you may use this argument against me.

I agree, but if Liverpool win a trophy or two this season, I can still see VVD getting it over Messi, deserved or not.

Defeats the whole purpose of the award in my opinion. Same way when Modric won it.

No way VVD. He is one of the best defenders in Europe and all that but is a tad overhyped in the PL probably because of the obsession with big dominant defenders and how rare they have been recently. Balon d'Or however goes for creators and forwards. I think only 2 defenders won it in the past 50 years if I am not mistaken and both had huge profiles long before they won it. Having said that, if Liverpool win the CL, Salah will have the best chance to usurp Messi. He is extremely popular and if he produces big performances in the semi and final, he will have the narrative to go with it even though I don't think he's even been the best forward at his own team.

Agreed. Modric was class, but not the best player on the planet class.
This is an individual award and winning trophies does not make a difference.

For example people assume I am bias because I am a sporting fan. But yet even if Ronaldo won the CL this year I would have said Messi was the better player this year.

Does not change my overall opinion but I can look at things honestly and say Messi was better this year.

I’m already taking bets on how many pages it takes for him to start with the “white genocide” spiel.
Do you have an issue with me or something? Just cause an opinion is different to yours.

I still wanna see Ronaldo with a comeback next year. If I'm Juve, I'm going all out for Pochettino this summer. He'd get the most out of Dybala & Ronaldo

Imagine if Messi gets his 6th this year & Ronnie gets his next year?

If they ended up tied this debate would go on past there footballing careers I can imagine.

Also I agree Juve have a lot of work to do to improve there squad this summer to properly compete for the CL.

it was already difficult to find an argument against Messi being the best this season as he's top scorer in every possible competition, but it will be even more clear if the trophies spread something like: City win EPL and Liverpool CL (or even Tottenham or Ajax). there's no way they would give it to someone from those teams in that case. Liverpool need to win everything for their player to have a chance and even then it's a big if. there's no way they would just ignore what Messi has been doing the whole season and give it to one of their players while not having a single one among top scorers or assists in CL.

There is a Copa America this summer right ? What if Argentina is eliminated badly in the group stages ?

Hmm, good point. There's an AFCON too, in which Mane/Salah could very well star in. If one of their nations wins while Argentina capitulate, and we better Barcelona in Europe and/or City in the league, maybe they'd give it to one of them.

There's also the nations league, but I don't really think that has much weight behind it.

Which they probably will be

Colombia can be tough, but with Qatar and Paraguay in group I doubt they'll go out. also, two of the best third-placed teams go though as well. they would need to seriously underperform in that case.

Yes they do and he does bugger all, for them, had a great world cup, ohh did he, one before that, oh no he didn't, Best player in laliga that's it. Shame really .

He has already won it imo. Barring injury for the rest of the year- nobody was better even if he failed to win the CL .

Okay, i'll do that then. Messi is better because he combines the following attributes:

Don't use the "combines" stuff as you don't give your "Ronaldo fan" any "combination" argument. Each Ronaldo attribute you come up with each different player and different example so let's play the Messi game the same style.

He is arguably the greatest dribbler of all time.

But being better at dribbling doesn't mean he's better. Quaresma is a better dribbler than Beckham or even Ronaldo is he a better player?

He's one of the best final third passers of all time.

But being better at final third passer doesn't mean he's better player. Do you think Saha or Ole (or any good passing striker) was better player than Rudd because they pass better in "final third"?

He's one of the most creative players of all time.

But being better at creative doesn't mean he's a better player. Do you think Okocha was better than Lampard or Gerrard because he's more creative?

He is currently one of the greatest goal scorers of all time. According to RSSC, he is currently 116 goals off the all time record of goals scored (Josef Bican). By the time he is finished, there is a real possibility that he will have become the greatest goalscorer of all time.

Again, scoring more doesnt make one better, or are you now saying that Lampard was better than Zidane AND Iniesta because he scored more?

"How many players in history combine so many traits at a GOAT level" - What about Baresi who is arguably GOAT at defending (marking, tackling), leadership, positioning, consistency, reading of the game, longevity. Same can be said about Maldini. Or do you think only attacking trait (that you choose) matter? Well, Messi is also GOAT at reading, consistency, and longevity too, but I am playing your game of "about other players".

Besides, you don't give your "Ronaldo fan" any "GOAT level" or "combine" argument. All the stuff you listed in your original post (scoring, amount of title won, heading, off the ball movement, clutch, proved himself in different leagues) Ronaldo is also at GOAT level, but you don't talk about it there, do you? If "GOAT level" and "combine" is such an important point of your argument why don't you let your "Ronaldo fan" use that? or do you afraid of losing your own argument with yourself?

By the way, Ronaldo is GOAT in term of heading, physically, consistency, determination, movement, "clutch", basically everything you need from a striker. Before you talk about Gerd Muller - for me Gerd Muller is also a GOAT level player.
Also, I am not intending to say Ronaldo is better since for me Messi is the GOAT by far. What I said is your way of argument "what about abcdef" is ridiculous and illogical.

This is my last post of the day so if you want to continue, message me on my inbox or wait for my reply tomorrow.

It’s really interesting how common it is for Cristiano fans to use plays and phrases directly from the alt-right/Trump play book.

It’s almost as if total devotion to a charismatic narcissist makes people completely lose their concept of objective reality or something.

(See also: José Mourinho)
 If anything it's the Messi brigade who behave like the deplorables with their worshipping of Messi (Trump).

They only value facts that agree with their world view and see everything else as fake news. :wenger:

To be fair, that's every idiot on the planet

Love how in this thread heading, weak foot finishing, movement, etc are all attributes equally valuable as dribbling and passing.

What? Messi is the better dribbler, passer, goal scorer in the world?

Well CR7 is the best at headers! And volleys too! Scoring with his right and scoring with his left! Scoring with his back to goal as well! He is also better scoring from corners (which are headers again but ok), also hes the best at positioning himself to... score! Also he moves the best inside the box to... score! Tallest too so he can score more than the midget! His leadership from the sidelines helps his teammates... score!

Yeah guys all those attributes fall inside the "goalscorer" category, which Messi is better at anyway. Until CR7 is setting teammates up for clear goal scoring chances with a 30 meter pass with his head, or he uses his height to scare defenders into the floor the way Messi does with his dribbling, i dont want to EVER see those attributes being compared again

It'd be embarrassing if he didn't win the Ballon D'Or this year. He's been by far the best player in the world.

I'd normally like threads to stay on topic but then I saw what thread it was...
This thread is supposed to be funny. This is no longer funny

Get back on topic please

Like, who would you rather have for a single big game right now? And who is/was better at the respective best?(ok, this isn't really up for debate. Messi's 2011-early 2013 peak still feels like a fever dream)

If I had the power, this thread would be closed and certain posters would get a 1 day ban every time they typed "Messi" or "Ronaldo".

17,000 posts in this thread going over the same old shit again and again and again. It can't be healthy!

Next up: Who would thrive better in a post-Brexit Premier League?
Big Sam obviously. No more bullshite foriner managers stealing good british jobs, good british lads running around smashing into each other instead of those dumb foriner players who are so good with the ball at their feet. The sheer inanity of that. If God intended for football to be played mostly with our feet he'd have put our brains there, but no, he put our brains in our heads instead. Proof that Andy Carroll is the ultimate footballer

It is very amusing to me :D

Who would be better at leading the living against the zombie armies of the dead?
Messi, easily.

I mean, what would Cristiano do, take off his shirt and pose at them? You think zombies would be impressed by his abs?

Messi's got those dead eyes. He'd reconfigure his brain from play football to hunt zombies and then you know he'd be out there, stalking them down, hunting them for sport and feasting on their livers.
