Hahahahaha without Messi Barca would’ve been fine?!

Oh my god, that is amazing.
Ronaldinho fell off a cliff as amazing as he was.

This is the most insane thing I’ve ever read. Barca would’ve been fine without Messi :wenger:

No no the whole club would have gone under by now. Thank God messi came along otherwise barca would be playing in whatever the equivalent of conference north is. Barca: Mes quen un Messi as per day sleeper.

Also, can you please change your supports from barca to messi?

Before he managed Ronaldo he was Praising Messi as the best. Same reason why I never quote Pep as saying Messi is the goat.

Less of a bias with zidane and the league since he always wanted
To win it more often than he did.

I thought you guys were saying people are allowed to change their minds amidst the Boateng debate earlier.

Of cos Zidane wanted to win it more often, he's clearly a winner who wants to win everything, but that doesn't mean he prefers La Liga to the CL.
They had won one La Liga title on the previous 6 (!) when Messi joined
Using your same timeline, Barca won it 4 out of 11 before 04. Anyway, isn't the point that Messi came into a side led by Ronaldinho on their way to winning La Liga in 05 and CL in 06 much more relevant than whatever United or Barca won back in the 90s?

You are so daft, Barca without Messi would’ve won maybe one La Liga at the most this decade.

Talented squad but by no means title challengers. Imagine thinking with a straight face that Barca would be “fine without Messi”

Absolutely absurd

Imagine thinking a club with the history of Barca will crumble without a player. Some of you messi fans really need to get your heads checked.

Imagine seeing how many trophies the club one before said player joined and how many trophies the club won after he joined and thinking they would’ve been fine without him.

Barca would’ve made the CL but they would’ve had maybe 3 trophies this decade. Thanks to Messi they surpassed madrid’s Total number of trophies.

I can’t even believe this is a real conversation.

Same. Like I said change Barcelona to messi in your supports bit.

He came into a side that was about to self-destruct and probably would be at Atlético Madrids level today if it wasn’t for Messi and Pep. Barcelona in 2007-2008 were in shambles.

Messi would probably have left in 2009 to play for a better team if Rijkaard stayed.

I still consider the 2008 Ronaldo the best and most satisfying player I've ever seen as he had everything, speed, power, air time, tricks, free kicks, left foot, etc, but he turned into a different player once he went to Madrid.

Over the last 10 years or so I feel Leo edges it, and this is froma die hard Ronnie fan. He seems to have a much higher influence on games. He's taken simple football to a whole new level and it's just a beauty to watch.

The only things Messi lacks is the ability to step up when there's huge pressure and the "off" games. When he has an off day he's invisible.

Even if CR7 is the better player in UCL, nationals and stuff like that, and overall the better player as a package if you compare both of them skill per skill (heading vs heading, shooting vs shooting, etc), Leo is just a yeard ahead, that's the best way I can describe it.

The quote I gave you was from the same event. I’m pretty sure my quote was the actual quote and yours is a sloppy transcription. The quotes are very similar yet in mine he specifically says ”at this club” to qualify his praise, but your source sensationalized it to make for a better headline.
https://www.foxsportsasia.com/football/la-liga/755402/ronaldo-im-best-player-history/

Ronaldo’s manager at Real, Zinedine Zidane, was a pretty great player himself, but there’s no doubt who he thinks the best ever is.

The stats speak for themselves. He’s the best player in the history of football,” said Zidane, who won the Ballon d’Or in 1998.

Clear enough?

Still from the exact same event! He clearly felt the need to qualify his verdict by sticking ”at this club” in there. Then a bunch of news outlets ignored that part and just went for a juicy headline.

I have to see an unedited video of it. I’m pretty sure the journalist asked ”is Ronaldo the best player ever” and Zidane felt uncomfortable making such a final verdict so he stuck ”at this club” in there.

United were dominating the EPL before Ronaldo arrived and won the league after he left.

United the league 6 times out of 8 years from 1996-2003.

EPL was a one team league with United so dominant.

Things cahnged sratically between 2003 and 2006. The Invincibles and then more importantly, 2 amazing seasons by Jose.

The return of the PL to United in 2007 was a shift back in the EPL, and it was because of many things. But Ronaldo's growing stature was a key part of that turnaround, and especially the title defence in 07/08.

He came into the side in 05-06 (you guys are more than happy to credit him with the CL 06, so don't pretend he wasn't involved).

You finished level on points with Real Madrid in 06-07 and lost on head-to-heads, so it's hardly a team in disarray.

Granted you had a bad season in 07-08, but one bad season doesn't change the fact that Barca had a competitive team.

Certainly much more competitive than United were in 04-06 where we finished 15, 18, 8 points behind the champions each season.

Good post

And again, Ronaldo deserves credit for that. No argument there.

But United fared well after he left until Fergie left.

About time the mods start giving out the Messi loyalists tags too.

It is the same event, but how much clearer can it be than the previous quote? Or are you going to insinuate that ESPN, Fox Sports, Reuters & co are all fake new?

Another source:

And the Portugal international came out with the assertion that his victory makes him the best footballer in history, claiming that there is nobody who can do what he does.

When asked if he agreed, Zidane said: "Yes. There are lots of players who have been very successful in this club, but no one has achieved what he has, and what he's still going to achieve.

"I think he's the best player in the world. It's easy to praise Ronaldo, though there's little more that can be said.

"You can see what he contributes to game every time he pays – he's phenomenal.

There are lots of players who have been very successful at Real Madrid, but no one has achieved what he has [being the best ever].

Surely Messi is walking the debate for this season at least? He's been phenomenal

”You”? I’m a United fan mate, believe it or not it’s actually possible to recognize Messi as the best even though Ronnie played for us and is obviously great too :)

It's perfectly fine to have the opinion that Messi is the best, but you sound just like the Messi brigade who insists on the so called "light years ahead" line to take. Most of them are Barca fans so it's little surprise I made that assumption.

How do you feel about Juve's CL chances? I think they should beat Ajax, City could be tricky.

In fairness to Ronaldo, it would be amazing if can take Juve to the CL finals this year.

After the developments with Kean? I hope they get fecking buried!

Oh dear, a 2nd time I agree with you in one day.

Seriously though, I think they will get past Ajax without too much issue, but City will be hard, in fact I think City are the favorites right now.

Barca should get past United unless they really do have a CL QF mental block.

This SEASON he has, I don't think we've seen enough this YEAR.

I assume you're talkig about the Balon D'or here.

Can't say I give a shite about that to be honest. It's seemingly limited to players on the CL winning team so I cant take it seriously as a world player of the year award.

Messi had a better SEASON than anyone last year and came 5th because Barca and Argentina didn't win any cups.

It goes back to how much you value average performance compared to performing on the biggest stage(s).

There's no denying Messi was poor both in the CL and WC so it's hardly surprising.

He had two assists against the champions and a crucial goal against Nigeria that would've seen them exit the group.

I thought he got better as the tournament went on whereas Ronaldo peaked in the opening match and went downhill.

Great minds think alike.

I think we should beat United, but Liverpool may kill us on the counter.

Bonucci is an embarrassment.
A 3rd time!! Better go to bed soon. :nervous:

The fact they needed a crucial goal in a group containing Nigeria and Iceland says it all.

Ronaldo did finish 2nd topscorer in the WC, but I agree it's underwhelming overall, the VAR decision that still went wrong against Iran really cost them dearly.

Maybe 74 is in the discussion, I've literally NEVER heard anyone call Holland 78 one of the best teams ever.

If he never wins another trophy, he'd be remembered as a bottler of highest order after having a few good years at the turn of the decade.
I put 78 because we kicked their asses back then, wanted to give more value to that final, do not spoil it:lol::lol:

Ronaldo had a great CL and a comparable WC. I actually do value performances week in week out. I've no why people don't seem to anymore.

Over 38 games he (& Ter Stegen) dragged a pretty poor Barca team to an almost unbeaten season. It was a remarkable feat than got nowhere near the credit it deserved.

Ronaldo fans changed the narrative along the way.

Exactly. In Ronaldo land, Messi still had prime Xaviesta behind him and could just walk the league (which of course doesn’t reflect poorly on Ronaldo at all – he gets credit when Madrid wins but when he loses it’s Madrid’s fault). And of course Real Madrid is a Spanish Huddersfield that only Ronaldo can lead to CL titles but not league titles for some reason.

Well Portugal needing a draw just to get 3rd place in a group stage in the Euro says it all ;)

I do agree that as a whole, both teams were underwhelming.

Argentina's back line was a mess.
