Who cares about Ray Hudson? Hell, you saw Messi dismantle Chelsea last year, you know how good he is

I saw Gerard Deulofeu do the same a couple of weeks before that tbf. Chelsea weren't a good team last year.

Not that it makes it irrelevant, it's impressive regardless but the point he was making stands.

He was superb against Chelsea but again, it’s not just pressure those teams outside of 2017 juventus were stifling Ronaldo as well. Roma again, that was a terrible performance.

Ronaldo literally scored in every single game he's ever played against Juventus.

And yes, Portugal were trying against Chile. You make it sound like Chile are some farmers team

Mate, do you know how humiliated argentinians feel to have lost 2 finals against Chile in 2 years? They weren't a bad team but justifying that they weren't bad because they drew with Portugal 0-0 a year later is ridiculous.

And Portugal won a euro final without Ronaldo and have gone 7 games without a loss when Ronaldo doesn’t play.

How did Argentina do in WC qualifying when Messi didn’t play?
Seriously? You're using international friendlies to make your point?

Ronaldo didn't play the Nations League games, 4 games and Portugal won 2 and drawn 2

As for qualifying for WCs:

Portugal have only qualified for 3 WCs in their entire history (out of 16 tournaments) before Ronaldo. They have qualified for every WC since.

As for Euro, they qualified for 3 Euro/11 before Ronaldo, since then they have made every Euro.

Argentina, on the other hand, have failed to qualify for the WC only ONCE in their entire history.

6 games... drew 3 of those

The last two official matches Portugal lost with Ronaldo playing was Uruguay in the 2018 WC and Germany in the 2014 World Cup. We went over 4 years without losing an official match with Ronaldo in the team. When he was out we were losing too, like the 1-0 loss at home to Albania or the 2-0 loss in Switzerland.

We've lost a total of 2 official matches with Ronaldo playing since 2012. Two.

You also lost to Chile with Ronaldo

Now compare to all the matches Argentina lose without Messi vs with him.

All this you know how good he is/watch the highlights is to me an indication that your views are based on a whole lot of nothing. I mean I'd understand your failure to articulate any reasonable justification if you thought the gap between the players was small - but for someone that continuously argues that it's not even close, this is laughable!

And very nearly twice they failed to qualify had it not been for Messi saving them

You know Argentina had gone over 20 years without making a final until Messi arrived?

Of course Argentinian’s felt bad about it, but Chile held their own in that era. Had a solid 2014 WC showing nearly knocking out Brazil and were ranked top 3 in the word at one point. It’s not Argentina they lost to Ecuador or something. Chile is a very hard team to break down. You have to give Chile credit. It’s a shame how dysfunctional the Argentina national team is.

You take the goals out of Messi, you still have the best playmaker on the planet.
You take the goals out of Ronaldo, and you have little more than a distraction up top.

You misread my Juventus comment, I meant of the teams knocking out Messi that Ronaldo played, all of them essentially stifled them except 2017 Juventus who imploded at halftime in the lockeroom.

Yup, You can barely count on one hand the number of games Ronaldo gets tons of praise in a game where he doesn’t assist or score

You seriously want to credit Messi for Argentina making the final in 2014?

Not a single goal in the knockout stage as they defended and penaltied their way to the final.

In fact, if it wasn't for Higuain (who is supposedly the only reason Messi has won nothing for Argentina), they might not even have beaten Belgium.

I see @Daysleeper is pretending like this didn't backfire!

Messi was player of the tournament, without him they don’t even get out of the group stage.

Funny how you mention Argentina “penaltying” their way to the final when Portugal won just ONCE in 90 minutes during the last Euro

We drew that in regular time.
And it’s the Confederations Cup, no one gave a shit. Germany beat them with their C team in the final...

It’s Chile ffs, of course it’s nothing short of a complete embarassment what happened to Argentina. Losing to Greece in 2004 wasn’t any less shameful because they beat a bunch of great teams at the time. And we lost to them once, not twice in a row.

Portugal played a full squad, they were definitely trying.

and Chile was great in multiple tournaments, they were top 5 in the world.

Funny you mention Greece who were very similar to Portugal’s 2016 run.

Ill take messi’s 2014 WC final performance over ronaldo’s 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2016 euro final performance

And who assisted di Maria against Switzerland in the knockout round prior?

And Messi was great against Belgium:

How many games did Argentina win within 90min in the knockout stage of 2014 WC? :smirk:

So what? We drew a game with them, so what? What does that literally have to do with anything?

Ajax beat Real Madrid and lost to AZ Alkmaar. Are AZ better than Real Madrid? What are you even on about?

You make an argument and then grab one specific game as proof that the point is true. Someone grabs a different game and using the same logic says the point isn’t true... then you start arguing about what happened in that other game instead of understanding that the point people are making is that using one specific game to justify things like that is completely nonsensical.

Chile did fantastic against Brazil in 2014 World Cup, you completely dismiss Chile like they are some bottom barrel farmer team. That’s what’s so funny. There is no logic to playing down a team that was top 5 in the world. I think if Chile played Portugal 5 times during that time the results would be very even. You massively underate
Chile

I didn't say he did nothing, but it was clear the defence was the main reason Argentina made it to the final.

I don’t disagree with that.

Sadly the attack wasn’t too shabby in 2018 but the defense was woeful.

You know Argentina had gone over 20 years without making a final until Messi arrived?

Argentina played the Copa America final in 2004, before Messi.

There’s a Copa America every freaking year it seems like, it’s not even like the Euros that only happens every 4 years.

Argentina won 4 games in total in the WC within 90 minutes.

Portugal won just ONCE and were extremely fortunate the rules were changed to allow 3 teams per group to qualify to the knockout round:

http://www.espn.com/soccer/club/por...n-euro-2016-by-winning-one-game-in-90-minutes
Do you struggle with simple English? You didn't answer my question.

Both teams did they needed to to make the knockout stage.

The rules were changed well before the tournament was played, Portugal did what they needed to qualify for the knockout stage, there's nothing fortunate about it. It's not like they changed the rules halfway through.

Sure they did, but if the euro was
Played any other time they fail to qualify. But yes, the rules were changed in advance and we got some of the most painful football from an extremely negative side.

If the Euro was played with the previous rules, they might have gone for a win in any of those group games. The point is that they did what they needed to qualify.

I agree the rules are shit, but Portugal didn't make the rules, Uefa did.

My bad you were right about that.

And it is weird how many copa America’s are being played now. At least an extra 2 than normal (2016, 2020)

Sadly this Argie squad is past it as Uruguay and Brazil are comfortably better now

Brazil were crap in 2014...

I literally said Chile weren’t a bad team, they were never even close to being a top 5 team in the world ffs.

Greece were beating everyone they came across back in 2003 and 2004, it was still an embarrassment to lose to them regardless of them being fairly decent. It’s Greece ffs. Now imagine it happened twice in a row... then you wonder why the argentinian media behaves the way it does.

Ill take messi’s 2014 WC final performance over ronaldo’s 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2016 euro final performance
I will take Ronaldo in euro 2016 over Messi in wc 2014 (overall not just the final ) . Ronaldo was excellent in all games he played except against Poland and final.

Ronaldo was excellent in euro 2012 as well and his performance against Spain in 2018 wc alone beats any of messis performance in 2014 wc .

They were much much closer to the top 5 in the world than Greece were. Greece had one amazing tournament. Chile had 4 very good tournament runs in a row. Chile was a damn good team. Especially in 2014-2016.

Brazil only became crap once Neymar got injured.

It all appears quite random:

75-87 every 4 years
87-01 every 2 years
01-07 every 3 years
07-15 every 4 years
16, 19, 20?!

I think they wanted to make it be the same year as the Euros and 2016 was some 100th anniversary BS

Yea, I read that too, but surely they should have gone 16->20 if they wanted to make it the same year as Euros and not bothered with 19.
