They were much much closer to the top 5 in the world than Greece were. Greece had one amazing tournament. Chile had 4 very good tournament runs in a row. Chile was a damn good team. Especially in 2014-2016

I wasn’t comparing Greece and Chile as teams, I was giving an example to contradict your point.

I will take Ronaldo in euro 2016 over Messi in wc 2014 (overall not just the final ) . Ronaldo was excellent in all games he played except against Poland and final.

Ronaldo was excellent in euro 2012 as well and his performance against Spain in 2018 wc alone beats any of messis performance in 2014 wc .

That was a horrible horrible horrible Spain side. Good performance though I agree.

And he only had 3 goals in the 2016 Euros. He had 3 good games that tourney.

Who cares about Ray Hudson? Hell, you saw Messi dismantle Chelsea last year, you know how good he is

Messi got dismantled by Chelsea many times and as per his usual standard, missed a crucial penalty at home. Forgot that conveniently?

It all appears quite random:

75-87 every 4 years
87-01 every 2 years
01-07 every 3 years
07-15 every 4 years
16, 19, 20?!

Conmebol is as corrupt as it gets. Extremely unfair to have that sort of variation when some generations will have a chance to compete in 2 or 3 Copas and others can play in 6 or 7.

Won’t even be surprised if they find a reason to have a Copa America in 2021 if Argentina don’t win it by 2020. Should start hosting it monthly after that.

No, but that was 7 years ago. Messi took Chelsea to the woodshed last season.

Indeed, crazy arrangement going on with the Copa.

UEFA is pretty corrupt too

As is Fifa. They all are.

That Chelsea side failed to qualify for the CL, let's not pretend they were world beaters.

2012 Chelsea were 6th in the EPL and still won the CL.

I don’t think that Chelsea side last year were amazing. But they were a good team.

Most people will agree that Chelsea 2012 were very lucky.

Not saying they were terrible, but pretty poor compared to the likes of Atletico, Juve, Bayern. No?

What exactly you want to say ? Ronaldo did feck all in euro 2016 and that performance against Spain shouldn’t even be considered because they were horrible?

Let’s all hail king messis magic against mighty Iran in wc 2014 then or mighty betis or mighty Lyon ?

All of the football authorities are corrupt! (You might as well say that all forms of authority are based on corruption, in fact).

But I would wonder what possible reason CONMEBOL would have for, as you have stated, wanting to fix the Copa America so that Argentina win it?

CONMEBOL is the South American Football Confederation that is headquartered in Paraguay.

Its president was Juan Ángel Napout, who is Paraguayan. Wilmar Valdez (Uruguay) was interim president until 26 January 2016 when Alejandro Domínguez (Paraguay) was then elected as president.

The Vice presidents are Ramón Jesurum (Colombia), Laureano González (Venezuela), and Arturo Salah (Chile).

CONMEBOL was founded was founded on 9th July, 1916 under the initiative of Uruguayan Héctor Rivadavia Gómez. Argentina was a founder member, as were Brazil, Chile and Uruguay. All current South American nations had joined by 1952.

I know that you think the entire world is a conspiracy to make people (correctly) believe that Messi is a better player than Ronaldo (which is already obvious anyway), but I can't really see the basis for this assertion that CONMEBOL is engaged in some form of corruption with the intention of fixing the Copa America so that Messi can win it.

This does seem like a rather baseless theory. I think perhaps you might have spent a little bit too much time on this forum, attempting to justify the indefensible view that Ronaldo is a better player than Messi.

It’s you who is trying hard to discredit Ronaldo’s performances . Read your post above

I know it was a Saturday night so perhaps you were all drunk but were you lot really arguing that Ronaldo and Messi are even comparable as playmakers?

I feel like they're both smart players who dictate the attack of their teams, just in different ways. When Messi plays, the team usually plays one-two's, intricate passing, possession, etc. while Ronaldo's physicality and runs means the team can go more direct with crosses and through balls. Both methods are at elite level so create multiple chances for their respective teams.

Chile did fantastic against Brazil in 2014 World Cup, you completely dismiss Chile like they are some bottom barrel farmer team. That’s what’s so funny. There is no logic to playing down a team that was top 5 in the world. I think if Chile played Portugal 5 times during that time the results would be very even. You massively underate
Chile

That's ludicrous, that same Chile didn't even qualify to the world cup mate.

I can give you a pass on the 2015 final, because they were at home, and still under Sampaoli, and had a bit of the mojo from the previous year. But the 2016 final is inexcusable, they were the shittier Pizzi version, he was being defended by Francisco Silva and other journey men. I am only being critical because it is Messi, not some average player. You have to hold the supposed best of all time to a higher standard. In tht final I cannot remember a dangerous situation he created, nevermind a assist or goal. His Argentina career is really underwhelming.

At least others tried to make a case, even if it was as bad as pleading watch the highlights you'll see, but you're gonna chicken-out with a green smilie. Like I said, Messi averaged only 4 assists more than Ronaldo per season La Liga during their time together in Spain; and in the CL, Ronaldo has more assists! Explain to me how the difference in creativity that happens to be, in your own words, not "even comparable", fails to translate into assists?

I'm genuinely hoping you'll offer some insight because so far all I got is watch the highlights and Suarez missed a sitter against Betis (bizarre).

Crazy to think we're going to be playing against Ronaldo, Mbappe and Messi in the same season. Quite a hard Champions League run to be fair.

Only through balls count in terms of creativity, crosses don't.

Also Messi has played with better strikers throughout their La Liga careers too.

Ronaldo has played a whopping 33 more games than Messi in UCL and only 7 more assists in that time.

Ronaldo has had his fair share of of assists from shots scored off of his rebounds compared to Messi

Also Messi has a much bigger gap in assists than Ronaldo on a year to year basis than you think:

Even crazier to think you’ve already beaten mbappe and Ronaldo!

It's hilarious that you consider video evidence of them actually playing to be inferior proof than a series of numbers (what are stats but highlights without context translated into numbers?) but how about you try this.. here's a video from a single season where Messi sets up his team mates 50 times with passes which don't lead to assists. Passes Ronaldo wouldn't even see let alone be able to be pull off.. this video alone displays far more vision and creativity than Ronaldo has shown throughout his entire career

I never have the same fear playing Juventus and PSG that I do playing Barca. They've always been the Elite team in World football for me. This is going back to 1991 in the Cup Winners Cup, when I was terrified we'd be hammered. And 1994 when we were hammered. Its shitting myself at the thought of what Messi might do to us in a few weeks. I'd rather be playing Porto, regardless of the fact we've beat Juventus and PSG away from home.

I agree with you. That being said, I would think the xA stat would help distill the information in the video to some extent: a measure of the assists Messi could reasonably expect over the course of a season.

I’m excited about the tie but Barca in CL in recent years have been underwhelming I do feel much better about this season.

You guys at least will play with a lot less pressure since everything from here on out is icing on the cake. If you can get a decent result at OT anything is possible

Football can only be played one way according to some of you.

4 years, 400 pages and 15,000 posts later and has a single person who contributed to this thread had their mind changed on "Messi or Ronaldo"?

In all fairness, I think quite a few changed their opinion towards Ronaldo after Real's CL title run.

However, for me it's less about the question in itself, it's rather that the double standards some apply in here are so unbearable that I can't resist posting here.

So, now creativity is only measured in assists? Ronaldo and Di Maria are more creative than Iniesta and Xavi?

6mSS6sv.png

Xavi - Assists every 316 minutes
Iniesta - Assists every 332 minutes
Ronaldo - Assists every 303 minutes
Di Maria - Assists every 193 minutes

If you guys keep moving the posts in what stats count or doesn't, what tells more and what tells less, competition importance and overall skillset analysis you'll get an hernia.

"For anyone wondering on why these players were chosen: These 6 players were the top assists providers of the last decade and they are all in the same age group with the exception of Ronaldo."

Thomas Müller lowkey the 4 best creative player of the last decade, keeping alive the tradition of underrating the Mûllers .

@MalcolmTucker So YouTube highlights as well?

Now the theory is that Messi is light years ahead in terms of creativity but that fails to translate into assists because he's being let down by teammates. Those stats are over a decade! What's the basis for the suggestion that Messi was consistently plagued with teammates who have been misfiring throughout a decade, which didn't happen to be the case for Ronaldo? Walk me that logic, please!

It has already been pointed out that it's flawed to compare data like this for players from different positions. Keep up!

Or find some fake graphics?

Every person in the universe has failed Messi. Otherwise he would have had 2000 goals and 4000 assists by this time. It must be so hard playing with mediocre players like ronaldinho, Henry, etoo ,Villa, xavi , iniesta, neymar , suarez etc. Really feel for Messi here, always let down by his own teammates:(

There's no argument to that video - you cannot find video evidence of Ronaldo creating chances like that over a 15+ year career let alone a single season. If you want to place primacy on one number in one competition then that's on you (either way they have the same assist ratio in the CL and Messi has had far more assists than Ronaldo over their career, but creativity is something you can't quantify in numbers imo). I know you can't genuinely think that Ronaldo is as good at playmaking as Messi, in the same way that I don't think Quagliarella, Piatek and Milik are better goalscorers than Ronaldo despite them having better goal ratios than Ronaldo in the Serie A this season and playing for far less dominant clubs - can you explain that? No. Football is complex and there are myriad of reasons, responsibilities and circumstance that lead things to their result.
