Good luck with that
Well, I won't hold my breath! I was just wondering if people would remember that they posted on here stating that Real Madrid would never sell Ronaldo in a month of Sundays, why would they let the best player in the world go, he's completely irreplaceable, etc, etc.

I'll accept apologies from anyone who said I was an idiot for writing that Ronaldo was past his best and Real Madrid would be well advised to let him go.

Apparently that was never going to happen.

Still this will be a really positive move for you all, as you'll now have to pretend that you care about Serie A. Previously you would never have watched SPAL play in a million years, and now when Ronaldo scores against SPAL you'll have to pretend that this is really significant.

I'm also looking forward to reading the argument that Ronaldo is better than Messi because Real Madrid were willing to sell him to Juventus, whereas Barcelona would never sell Messi in a million years, so now Ronaldo has played in three countries, so therefore he's the better player.

It's a sensible move from Ronaldo, though. Now delusional Juventus fans can pretend he's the best player in the world as well, along with delusional Real Madrid fans, delusional fans of Man United who probably still think that he's going to go back there, and delusional Portugese people. Oh, and hormonal kids who play FIFA too much. Although the delusional Real Madrid fans might now no longer need to claim that he's the best in the world any more, as he won't be playing for them.

And you can all tune into his new reality show when it comes out. Literally hours of Ronaldo fun to come, watching him have arguments with his family, expand his social media profile, and possibly occasionally score against Sassuolo.

It's a forum where people will have other opinions. People will like Ronaldo over Messi. Get used to it, instead of calling everyone delusional because they don't agree Messi is better. Obviously anyone who thinks Ronaldo is better is either Portugese or fans of Man Utd, Real Madrid and Juventus, and that too they are delusional. Have you posted in any other thread other than Messi or Ronaldo ones? Grow up, or not....

Apologise to me, he said, while insulting kids and at least 4 different groups of people :wenger:

Ronaldo made a great career move. It is safe to say he will add many league titles to his CV. I hope Messi decides to look for a new challenge and we pick him up.

Well, it was a joke. I wasn't really expecting people to apologise. Very few people in this world can ever admit that they might be wrong, let alone on this thread.

It's just kind of funny to me that when I suggested that Ronaldo would leave Real Madrid this year this was treated with total derision, and now precisely that has happened. Of course, none of the people who said this will now come back and admit that they were wrong.

It was always on the cards as, firstly, Real had a bad season last year which was disguised by them scraping through the Champions League. They need to improve their team, as there is no way that a club with their resources should find their domestic season being dead and buried months before campaign is over. It just isn't justified to base your entire way of playing on feeding an ageing forward who contributes little more than tap-ins any more.

Secondly, after Ronaldo's somewhat embarrassing statement directly after the Champions League final, a move was always possible. The reason for him wanting to leave, that he doesn't feel 'valued' enough, and that the club had the audacity to contact Neymar's representatives because they're going to have to replace Ronaldo sooner rather than later, is equally embarrassing.

If people had anything about them at all, they'd admit that they were wrong. However, as I've got older it's become increasingly clear that very few people have the capacity to say "I was wrong".

So who will win Ballon D’or this year? Ronaldo or Messi? Or someone else who win the WC? (Modric, Kane or Mbappe?)

Ronaldo, easily. Unless he goes to Italy and doesn't score between August and January, which won't happen.

Think the bigger question is, will Messi be able to win two more as he declines to beat Ronaldo's total of 6?

I don't see the argument for Ronaldo getting it this year. If he had delivered in the final stages of the Champions League like he did at the start of the knockout rounds, then definitely, but he didn't.

Could see an argument for Messi based on consistency of performance over the season, but that seems highly unlikely.

I imagine the outcome of the World Cup will decide the destination of the Balon D'Or. Modric has a claim.

Ronaldo went into the World Cup as favorite with Messi and Salah being close and Neymar having an outside chance. The truth is he had a better World Cup than all of them. If Croatia wins the World Cup, Modric will have a great chance but otherwise it’s going to be Ronaldo as much as it pisses people off.

Messi should be second too, the distance between them and the rest is smaller but they were still the two best players in the world. It’s getting boring that they’re always top 2 but it is what it is.

If Ronaldo wins the BDO, it will be hilarious. I even think Messi shouldn't be in top3 this year.

It has to go to Modric or Mbappe.

Modric may have a chance if he wins the WC (best player in WC, key player in winning CL). But Mbappe had an rather "average" season in PSG if compare to the elites (Neymar and Cavani are both easily better than him at PSG). Even though he has some brilliant performance in WC (in about 2 games), he "only" has 3 goals in 6 games in the WC, that's not good enough to turn it around.

Gonna make a bold prediction that Messi won’t win another one. Ronaldo this year, someone new next.

Griezmann perhaps if France win it?

Solid season at Atletico, Europa League, 2nd in Spain, 3 goals and 3 assists I think so far in the WC?

Not solid enough. He wasn't best player/top scorer in Spain, he wasn't the best player/top scorer in Europe, and he wasn't in the WC.

I see the Ballon d'Or as fairly farcical anyway. But why does it have to be a forward? If you look at the Ballon d'Or odds listed here:

https://www.oddschecker.com/football/football-specials/ballon-dor/player-of-the-year

There isn't a single goalkeeper or defender listed. So the bookmakers don't think any defensive player has any chance whatsoever of winning it. The only defender who has been remotely close in recent years is Ramos, and that's because he scores goals. Many people don't even think he's a particularly good defender (I don't agree with that personally, although, as with many centre-backs, he can be made to look a bit slow and ponderous at times). There has always been a bias towards forward players throughout its history, but it's beyond that now.

It shouldn't be called the Golden Ball, it should be called "who scored the most goals in the team that won the Champions League".

I'm not sure I'm going to be watching Messi or Ronaldo next season, except in the Champions League. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not inclined to shell out for Eleven Sports (which has bought the rights to La Liga and Serie A for those not in the UK). As of yet, they haven't even agreed a carrier deal, so at present their two television channels are just online. Plus, Serie A is a rubbish league anyway, I haven't watched any of it on BT Sport. It's just not competitive. Of course, La Liga is increasingly uncompetitive as well, but at least it has three strong teams.

I have enjoyed watching Ronaldo at Real Madrid, but I can't see myself watching him play for Juventus. He is now in the same position as Neymar, where anything other than winning the league is total failure, and basically his season is going to come down to 7 games in the Champions League knockout stages, or however many Juventus play.

I've enjoyed watching the Real and Barca over the years, but I'm not sure I'm going to subscribe to an online channel just to see La Liga. I know you can watch these things on streams, maybe I will consider that, but I like to watch on my TV, not on a laptop screen.

Congratulations, you know as much about football as Perez, who said the following of Makelele: "He wasn't a header of the ball and he rarely passed the ball more than three metres. Younger players will arrive who will cause Makelele to be forgotten."

If that’s the main issue, just plug your laptop screen to your TV via HDMI:D

Yeah I always got the vibe Rooney was jealous of Ronaldo. Don’t know why. And not even because of anything to do with that interview.

And those drunk rumours..just lol..

He was always, always jealous of Ronnie.

Heard stories of him calling Ronaldo a wanker when he was pissed drunk.

I would be pretty pissed too if I was older than Ronnie and was fat and playing in DC while Ronaldo continues to rack up the Champions League titles and Balon d'ors, year after year.
A sad post this. Trying to completely discredit a club great because of an opinion he holds, which is clearly understandable whether you agree with it or not. This topic is beyond toxic with some people.

He did WHAT!?!?!?

I can't name anyone I know whom I haven't called a wanker when pissed drunk honestly.

#CR7Facts When returning from the world cup, Messi, while traveling with a couple of personal bodyguards, met Ronaldo. Intrigued by the fact that Ronaldo was all by himself, Messi asked: "Where are your bodyguards?" Ronaldo replied: "I don't need bodyguards" and then proceeded to choke the feck out of both of Messi's guards

#CR7Facts Once, Ronaldo heard that Messi adopted a wolfdog and managed to teach it how to dribble with its muzzle. Ronaldo then proceeded to wrestle a bear with his own hands, brought it back home, and taught it his trademark goal celebration.

I'm pretty sure this is the end of an era.

Ronaldo will have the longevity, but Messi will detoriate faster than him. I have doubts about Messi being the main man for Barcelona at 32 let alone carrying the team that will yet built around him.

Ronaldo is fit as feck, work out all day long, eats and sleep like Micheal Jordan. While Messi looks like a sad mike tyson and will lose his physical abilities faster than Soulja Boy's one hit wonder. His fast dribbling and pace, what was supposed to be his main weapon are no longer effective. Based on how many dispossession and tackles he got during world cup. Sad to see really.

At 32 next season, Messi will be having the cold hard truth that he has to give a way to another player to carry the Barcelona team. We will see him struggle to adapt to his age. Messi should now be looking to be the next Iniesta with a supporting role.

While Ronaldo is scoring for fun, Messi will be having a season of epiphany that will make him realize that an era is over. He look around him and no longer sees the rival that will push him to be the best. He will see emptiness in the league..

I don't know what I'm smoking to be honest.

Yeah Rooney must really feel quite shit about himself when he sees what Ronaldo is doing compared to himself

Are you, by any chance, spending your vacations in Costa Rica? :nono:

Messi comes from a great season, individually way better than -Ronaldo's at FCB in terms of numbers.

I wanna watch Ronnie at Juventus, specially during the fisrt period of the season where he's usually bad, really bad. He always starts to play well in the late part of it.

I think both are going to feel a bit of that "emptiness" now. Juve would win the league regardless so it's going to be a completely new thing for Ronaldo, uncomparable to his days in Manchester and Madrid where he was needed at his best to dethrone Mourinho's and Pep's machines. there are no teams on similar level in Italy so I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up playing about 25-28 league games per season. unless competition make Juve fight for title untill the last day, of course.

when it comes to Messi, it's a harder to predict whether is he going to skip games more now, probably not. there's no Ronaldo anymore, but Atletico bought Lemar and are obviously going to compete as long as Diego is there. Madrid remains a mistery for me, though. it will be completely different feeling watching el clasico now and not having this thread bumped after the game.

Reading stuff like this makes you think CRonaldo was miles better than Messi last season. Also, do people forget that Messi didn't rest every other league game like CRonaldo so far in 2018 (who still did nada in the last three Champions League games he was "saving" himself for)? That was a mistake on Messi's part though, as he looked gassed as feck at the WC. Then again, not even Maradona 86 would've made that Argentina team come anywhere near the trophy. I think next season we will see a Messi who sits out more games than ever, and that is by missing games completely - not just taking it easy on the pitch when he feels like it. The question is if Barca can afford to rest Messi if the are to win the league again.

It's crazy how 2 good knockout rounds in the Champions League can convince people Ronaldo had a better season than Messi.
