Yes. But surely that just strengthens (sp?) my point that the Euros for Portugal are harder than Copa America for Argentina and that it's not as simple as saying one has done better than the other for the NT simply because they've reached further.

No. It means Portugal are not a great team and have had many variables going their way during the whole tournament. Which is absolutely true.

Oh, so your argument is Ronaldo has won a Euro? Even if he didn't do anything to help in the final? It just goes to prove that it's a team sport and that you can win a title by missing most of the deciding game, and you can lose by being the best player on your team. Hell, Ronaldo not playing proved to be good for Portugal, considering the player who took his place brought the win.

You say it like it wasn't something huge for Portugal to win the Euro for their first time, it is and Ronaldo led them to that final. It is a team sport and his teammates also did well but their tactics and chances relied a lot in Cristiano scoring key goals to see them through each round. I didn't want to focus solely on that Euro as I think Portugal also did pretty well for their standards in previous international tournaments but the fact is no one was going to acknowledge Ronaldo contributions to his team until he had won something, which he did. He has also done very well in the qualification rounds but people like you simply don't care or won't recognize his good performances for Portugal.

So he has proven himself in the two most competitive leagues and has also won the very first Euro Cup for Portugal.

Neither him nor Messi really led their teams to anything, 'led' being the key word here. Both Argentina 2014 and Portugal 2016 campaigns were strictly team efforts and managerial feats from Sabella and Santos, with a lot of defensive stability. I'd say the defensive setup of both teams was more fundamental in the success of those campaigns than the presence of Messi/Ronaldo in those teams. They don't get that credit because they didn't deserve it. They haven't done more than any 'normal' world class player does for his NT.

Would you blame Ronaldo for Portugal's shameful exit in the group stages of the World Cup?

Ronaldo will most certainly go down as the greatest goal scorer of all time. The man is clinical.

With that being said, when it comes to THE GOAT, all you need to do is take out goals from both players and I don't think it's debatable. Messi just has so much more to his game.

Last time I checked Messi has the records for most goals scored in both a season and calendar year. He also has more goals than Ronaldo this season. But look at the service Ronaldo gets, absolutely insane.

Even though Messi scores more than him?
Still think Messi is a level or two above. People have weirdly short memories

I'm still Messi > Ronaldo, but surely stats of Ronaldo at Madrid vs Messi at Barca in terms of goals sways it towards the Portugese?

Modric and Isco are way more important and influent in this team than Ronaldo.

ronaldo is just a goalscorer. And a legendary one.

Can't be bothered to argue with that lot...

5th Ballon D'Or in the bag.

:smirk:

Unless Messi goes on to win the WC with Argentina and another CL or two.. Ronaldo is GOAT.

Messi's fanboys argument is getting harder and harder with every passing day.

Don't normally get involved in these kind of debates and i'm not part of either of these guys fanbases but I did think that it was always a lot closer than a lot of Messi fans think. Now that Ronaldo is adding more trophies to his name and along with the stuff he done with us, he could be considered better in my opinion.

Ruthless efficiency from Ronaldo.

Messi has and always will be a superior footballer. Ronaldo may end up with an extra ballon d'Or at this rate but he doesn't match Messi's talent.

Agreed. Messi fans seem to just dismiss the argument as though there's only one clear winner. With a 5th Ballon d'Or for Ronaldo looming, that is clearly not the case.

What does talent have to do with anything?

Well, Messi is 29 and Ronaldo is 32. Let's see what Messi can do before he reaches 32.

I have more talent the both, but my talent didn't get nurtured so i am playing in a Sunday league

Messi overall game is still superior. Ronaldo is great in his on right. Most efficient player ever.

I think that the debate is officially open now. And it is very close. On achievements, Ronaldo is probably slightly ahead:

Ballon D'Ors: Ronaldo 5 - Messi 5
UCL: Ronaldo 4 - Messi 4 (although he didn't play that much in the first one)
League titles: Ronaldo 5 - Messi 8
International trophies: Ronaldo 1 - Messi 0
Golden Shoe: Ronaldo 4 - Messi 4
UCL top scorer: Ronaldo 6 - Messi 5

It is close, and I think that now it can go either way, while 3-4 years ago, I thought that Messi will be remembered as clearly the better player.

Bayern aside, during the last 2-3 Champions Leagues, Cristiano Ronaldo was never this superlative against big teams in the latter stages. Since Zidane's good sense in managing Cristiano's fitness played a part, I think things would have been a bit more exciting if Barcelona could also afford to rest Messi.

There's a debate for 'greater player' for sure.

Messi is clearly the better player for me.

I made the mistake of rereading some of the first pages in this thread and found this gem by our Juventus supporter

I won't remember Ronaldo in years to come unless someone brings him up in conversation.

You'll never forget him now, my friend

Tbf one of Messi's Champions Leagues and two of his league titles happened when he was barely playing while Cristiano has always played a big part in all of his titles. In terms of trophies won it's pretty much the same for both, Cristiano maybe has a slight advantage but Messi is also younger.

Messi will always be better footballer than Ronaldo. Ronaldo is luckiest piece of sh1t out there that scores a lot of goals while playing for the most expensive squad ever. Messi is inspirational, creative, majestic. Ronaldo is a ruthless robot who shows emotion when he has to cry.

Ronaldo is without a doubt the better finisher for me, also in terms of being hungry for it. It is a huge compliment to him that he's gotten so close and even equalled( and done better than) Messi because the Argentinian is and will always be the better player.

You could almost taste the bitterness.

Yep, I mentioned that for UCL title, but didn't mention for his two league titles.

So, on real titles, it is 4-3 Ronaldo for UCL, 6-5 Messi in league titles, and 1-0 Ron on international trophies. Ronaldo is on advantage IMO.

On individual trophies it is pretty much a draw.

At this point, they are at the same level but Ronaldo is better (my opinion). Right now it's simply a matter of 'who you prefer' and not 'who is better'; every argument made on this thread is to buttress why you prefer one player to another (which is okay btw)

This is it for me too. I've never seen a footballer better than Lionel Messi. Ronaldo isn't close to him IMO in terms of sheer ability.

Greatest and best are two entirely different things.

How can you say they're on the same level then say Ronaldo is better?
