Memphis Depay | Lyon player

He's just another in a large group of players I've got no feelings towards and wouldn't give the tiniest shit if he left. In a season's time I'll have forgotten he even played for us.

Same here. When all is said and done Depay will be as insignificant as Obertan and Bebe in the history of United.

The bit I don't understand is what's to gain from selling him now, it's not like we need the money. Let's loan him out and make a judgement once he's had some playing time somewhere. What's there to lose?

Would love for him to go to Everton and prove us all wrong. Wish he went in the summer and was able to have a full season and a pre-season of Koeman's methods.

I still think there is something about him worth exploring, though I don't really know what that something is.

Not Everton hopefully, when they see him play, they'll bench him and send him right back. Either another team that needs wingers so will get games or off to a German league or Serie A team.

Official Everton tweeter account congratulated him on scoring against Luxembourg yesterday.

Not arsed if he goes to Everton, he doesn't have it in him to make the grade.

We need to loan him - he has it in him to be a great player, he just needs a manager to trust him with a run of games and the freedom to make mistakes.

Sell him.

Six months stinking up the place at Everton and he goes from a talented young player struggling to adapt to the expectations of a huge club, to an unsaleable dud with 2.5 years left on a very lucrative contract.

If we were that worried we'd include a buyback clause, although on current evidence this would be academic.

Apparently Mourinho doesn't want to loan him to a PL team in case he suddenly starts playing well. (source) Which is a shame since that really shows that Mourinho doesn't seem to be playing the long game. If Memphis would actually come good at Everton, and get used to PL, then we know he can do the same at United. We might lose a place this season, but what does 1 season matter if Memphis plays great the 10 seasons after? If he goes abroad, he might still come back not being used to the PL...

Loan to PL team or sale with buyback clause included is what will happen I reckon. I'm not 100% sure about it but think that in a team in which he would have less defensive assignments he would come good.

Dutch league isn't on pair with EPL of course but scoring 20+ goals there for a season and having 10+ assists is respectable in any top league IMO.

In PSV he wasn't playing as a wide LW like here, he was something of a SS or the role that Griezmann has in Atletico. He excelled in that system where he had freedom to roam around and that's the reason i just can't see him being top player in some top club.

In order to have the best out of him you gonna subordinate the whole gameplan to compliment his style of play but he just doesn't have that kind of quality to justify that.

Everton, Southampton in EPL may suit him.

Apart from about 4 clubs, the Dutch league is anything but a top league.

No quotes in that source.

We don't know if it's because of that or perhaps as another poster suggested that he might prove he can't do anything at Everton either in which case we'll be running down any value he had.

Said it before but even the keeping on many of those goals is very very poor.

Put a "good" prem keeper (but not great) in the net for all those goals and around 40% of them wouldnt have been goals in my view.

Then the better defenders, the fact that PSV were champions that year(so naturally attacking more than we are atm) and you see that the stats were never really going to transfer to a top league like the PL.

My view?, sell him for circa 10m.

Certainly behind Primera, Bundesliga, Calcio and EPL. Maybe on pair with Ligue 1 and Primeira but definitely better than the rest of Europe.

It is not on par with Ligue 1, not even close. Portuguese is stronger too IMO, its top clubs are far ahead of PSV, Feyenoord and Ajax.

I said "maybe on pair". Maybe Primeira clubs are stronger, maybe not...it's hard to tell exactly but French league isn't really that much stronger than Dutch league, only PSG stands out. If it weren't for them, those 2 leagues would be probably on pair.

That's absolute nonsense. There are 5-6 teams in Ligue 1 who would easily compete for title in Netherlands. PSG are not even leading the league now, they are third. Teams like Nice, Monaco and Lyon are better than anything Eredivisie can offer IMO. How long has it been since Ajax passed CL qualifying round for the last time?

No, that is an absolute nonsense. Monaco and Nice just emerged as top 4 contenders in past 2 years, not to mention that Monaco's owner is a billionaire whilst Nice only started playing last year thanks to Ben Arfa who carried them pretty much. Lyon considering they're always close to top would probably be good in Eredivisie. PSG might not be on top now but sure as hell they will win it this season. Let me remind you that Atletico barely went through PSV on penalties last year in KO stage. Actually PSV had great chances and could have gone into the next round, and that's Atletico that reached the final.

The rest of Europe isn't worth talking about.

Monaco have just emerged?? They have consistently played CL and done rather well. Nice, I agree. But overall the standard of football in that league outside the top 5 or 6 is way above that of the Dutch league outside the top 4. By a long way.

Mate I'm not sure that you're aware of the fact that Monaco played CL football just 3 times in last 10 years (this season included) and all of that since that Russian guy bought them. In fact they were even relegated to 2nd league in 2010.

Compare the amount of top talent Ligue 1 has produced over these past 10 years to the Eredivisie and then come say that again.

It's literally one of the toughest Leagues in Europe to perform in hence why their exports tend to perform well in foreign Leagues.

I doubt that is true at all.

Mourinho has been adamant in the past about how he us against the practise in English football where rivals don't do business with each other. He allowed Mata to join us.Everton are even less of a threat than what United were to him at the time, and Memphis is less of a player than Mata who had twice been named Chelsea's player of the season.

One of our worst signings ever. As long as he doesn't stay with us beyond January, I couldn't care less what memphis does to save his career. Notice that I didn't even capitalise his name. A nothing player.

Still think he can do a great job in the right situation, but think his United career is over. Koeman may be able to get the best out of him by playing him as a #10

Read my post again and than look for a definition of the word "maybe".

It's about getting rid of deadwood.
A lot has been made of getting rid of players who lack skill (ie. not good enough to play for us) and also those lack mental strength.
Jose has got to address these issues, otherwise it will be another year finishing in 4th/5th place.
Of course, if you are happy with 4th/5th place, then leave things as they are. Maybe, like Liverpool, we wait another 25 years for a league title?

It never worked out for Memphis here, best of luck to him whenever he goes. Not sure where he should go but at this point I dont care.

As a number 10? :lol::lol::lol:

What on earth have you seen in him to make you think that he could do anything at all in the position??

He's got quite a wide-frame. That seems to have worked well for one of our players being the mainstay number 10 for a few seasons.

Actually watched him play in that position in pre season last year when he did a very good job playing behind Rooney. He can actually pass, get into scoring positions and has a good shot on him. LvG just totally fecked him up and he has not recovered.

You must have low standards. There was nothing exciting about him in that position during that summer

Well we all have different opinions of players. Everyone else seems to have lowered their standards by accepting our current #10, and no, i'm not talking about Rooney.

Watch him go join Mark Hughes and the new, sexy Stoke. Bojan, Afellay, Depay - it even looks right
