Memphis Depay | Lyon player

He's in a bit of a tricky situation right now, but he MUST perform when he gets the chance. If he plays tonight he needs an assist or goal, he's been close on occasions for us, just needs that extra bit of luck. Was Netherlands best player against France.

Eh, I tend to disagree. Karsdorp en Van Dijk were miles better. Memphis offered some intend and nearly scored the late equalizer, but his decision making was as poor as it's always been.

I still think he can turn it around. There's a quality player in there somewhere.
How long can you give a player before you write them off though? He was heralded as the new Ronaldo and we spent 25m on him but imo he's nowhere near as good as Lingard.

Apparently AC Milan isn't the only team that would like to take Memphis on a loan, AS Roma is another contender. This gets the complete list already up to 5 teams, and 4 of them are in the Serie A.
  • Wolfsburg
  • AC Milan
  • AS Roma
  • Inter Milan
  • Juventus
It would be good for him to go, since he's isn't getting any playing time here. I would choose AS Roma, or AC Milan if I was him. Wolfsburg is not good enough currently, Juventus might be too good, and Inter does have the right trainer, but their performance is hit&miss lately.

Definitely think he needs a loan. Too early to write him off particualrly when it's hard to see how much of the problem is mental with him trying to over do it

I feel we are getting real bad at not playing players in their best positions or with the right personell and then selling them off because they haven't proved themselves. The problem is mainly on us, not on them.

Tell him he's not muscly enough then ship him to Everton. Two birds, one stone.

For his sake Everton would be a good choice. I think Koeman is a fine trainer to help him get his head back on. I doubt he will ever be a true top player, but then again, I never thought he could be to begin with. The street football tricks he sometimes pulls of just mask a merely above average technique and while not slow he isn't pacey enough for a winger. Can be a decend player, but not United quality sadly. The entire Netherlands thought we had the new Robben after Brazil, sadly the new Robben he's not.

It's not all on him. I've read multiple times from pros that in England not training brings the best out of you, matches are. You must play week in and week out to keep it moving.

Mourinho didn't give Memphis a few starts. Conte did it with one guy and look what happened to Victor Moses who's now one of their best players, imo.

Maybe Memphis doesn't fit in Mourinho's system and he's just here to make up the numbers.

Anyway, i'm certain that Memphis can easily become one of the better wingers in the league, he just needs a coach who puts his trust into him. Memphis is a lot better than the likes of Zaha or Bolasie. I think he can take on Mané.

I couldn't see him getting that much football at Everton, tbh. They have Bolasie, who they paid £30m odd for, Deulofeu and Mirallas, both of whom are decent players and, probably more importantly, actually owned by Everton, who might not want them to waste away while a loan player plays games they'd have gotten otherwise. If he was substantially better than them I could see it, but given that he's done nothing for 18 months odd, it seems like a gamble from Everton's point of view.

Just like Januzaj he isn't anywhere near as good as the initial hype suggested, but unfortunately it'll take some of our more optimistic fans two or three seasons to realise it.

We should not loan him until we buy. Our attack is shite as it is.

Good point.

Maybe Bolasie and Congo will go to the ACN, in which case Memphis could play for a couple of games? LOL.

Moving to Everton wouldn't do a fat ton of good for him. He won't get that many games.

Judging by his time here so far, his skill set is limited to playing as a wide forward in a counter attacking setup. There he would only be available for quick transitions and try to exploit overloads against the opponent. He'll never ever be a good player in a team where you are required to open up defenses by individual runs on the ball.

Everton isn't the place for him. Bayer Leverkusen would be a better fit. Not that they would take him, anyway

Sorry but I think he's crap, but knowing us we'll keep him till he proves his crapiness beyond all doubt leaving us having to beg for clubs take him off our hands in a few years time

Yip, agreed, even as an impact player he is useless.

Nani would come in lose the ball and run down blind alleys, but he'd make something happen, either an assist or make the full back panic he made the opposition think.

Depay comes on and is like giving the opposition an extra man!

Everton could be a good step for him simply because of Koeman, who really rates him and has faith in him, believes he can bring out the best in him. That's what's Memphis needs and he won't get that at many other teams. Koeman wouldn't want him unless he can get games there. He tried getting him 2 years ago too at Southampton. In hindsight that would've been a better step for him than us.

Yeah it would be much better for him to go somewhere like that, but I still have faith in his talent so I would rather us not give him to a rival even if he clearly hasn't worked out here.

When Southampton wanted him Memphis preferred staying at PSV for 1 last year. Together with Wijnaldum they really decided to stay and get the title after 3-4 years of Ajax winning it.

Rumors this week added 3 new teams in the running for Memphis, which gives us a longer list of places he could go.
  • Wolfsburg
  • AC Milan
  • AS Roma
  • Inter Milan
  • Juventus
  • Marseille
  • Napoli
  • Everton
I would prefer Everton since it's the only PL team, or the team that gives him the most game time.

Weird that there so much interest. He doesn't even look premiership level to me.

I agree with the second part, but it's easy to see why there'd be interest. Loans are low risk and if a club can bring out the player we thought we were getting it'd be well worth it. Particularly as most of those clubs are operating under more restrictive financial constraints and are also in a different league, which may suit his 'talents' better. If he plays for any of them like he has for us, they just keep him on the bench and let him go at the end of his loan. I don't think it's been that long since he showed some quality that people are willing to write him off completely.

He's not good enough for Everton over their other options. Better off somewhere like Sunderland.

Indeed. At Everton, he may get some initial games, but when/if he gets founds out to be crap (like at MUFC), he'll be permanently benched or returned back to us.
At Sunderland he will definitely get game time and Moyes will definitely take him.
He needs to go to a team where he will be the absolute first teamer, with no risk of being benched for playing badly.

Personally though, I think he moves back to PSV, where he'll be a guaranteed superstar for the next 10 years.

Not going to happen, PSV couldn't afford his huge wages. The smart money is on a transfer to some stupid Turkish club, that seems to the graveyard for overrated players.

When we signed memphis, after seeing the videos and watching PSV play it was Wijnaldum who I wanted us to sign shame he ended up a scouser

Sarri is a good coach so I prefer to sell to Napoli with a buyback clause.

Read that Marseille has a new owner though, maybe it's time to cash in and rip someone else off for a change

Remember when the Caf tried to convince itself he was shit because he signed for Liverpool? One of the best bargains of the season so far.

Been woeful so far, what's wrong with him. He's so much worse than 2 years ago.

You mean beside his awful and disgusting personality? Or him wanting to be a gangster and a raper.. I bet this guy is poison for the teams moral. Seems like a really unpleasant person to be around. I really hope we get rid of all the dross that never had, or will have the mentality to be a Manchester United player.

Wow. I didn't know he had an awful and disgusting personality!
Also he wants to be a gangster AND a rapper? Not just a gangsta rapper, someone who raps about a made up fantasy thug life, so they can sell records but Memphis actually wants to be a Gangster, as in, like, join the mob? The absolute scumbag!

I really want to hate him for his awful and disgusting personality, though and for him poisoning the team moral so if you could find me even a shred of evidence to support those claims, I'll be right behind you!

Any proof to back up this rant?
