Memphis Depay | Lyon player

According to the football leaks, we've paid 34 million euro for him and PSV have a 10% sell-on clause. There were some other potential bonuses for winning the league and performing in the CL, but they obviously don't apply.

So if we sell him for the rumoured 17 million euro, 1.7 million should go back to PSV. Which on it's turn means we're only recovering about half of what we paid for him, hopefully there will be another sell-on clause or something to soften this.

He has scored 2 league goals for us, just as much as Alexander Büttner did. This is quite shocking. Hope he develops a sense of humility as he gets older and tries his best to improve as a player.

Wow, what a terrible signing he will have been - one of the worst since Veron.

We can't complain about any fee we get for him, he has done literally nothing outside of one decent game in a qualifier. We normally get shafted with transfer fees but this one is about right.

Far far far worse than Veron! Veron scored some cracking goals and had a few blinding games against decent opposition. Depay has had decent games against pub quality players.

I tend to be dismissive of managers getting all the blame for signings but with LvG his record is rather damning.

Depay might flourish elsewhere but he certainly didn't have the right attitude for us it seems.

As per the football leaks sell on Clause would only be applicable If we make profit on the sale of Depay which is simply out of Question as things stand.

Looks like it will be done sooner rather than later. Surprised none of the lower prem teams took a risk with him. Palace could have used him, also surprised Everton dint come back for him, i think they wanted a cheap deal which we did not agree to.
Well another one of the wage bill then, now ashley young, Fellaini and daley blind next.

LVG can't be criticised for this, we all wanted him and he looked a world beater at PSV. He's just not lived up to his potential.

Of all the Van Gaal signings, this is one he gave the most chances to. He was in each matchday squad until the FA cup.

In fact Van Gaal actually moved Martial(Our best player at the time) to the right wing in order to get Memphis in his favoured left wing spot. I am not sure what more Van Gaal could have done.

We all wanted him? I doubt 90% of the place had even heard of him before we were linked. The benchmark isn't the majority of fans thinking he looked good on a few youtube videos.

Either this was a failure of our scouts or of LvG but one of them is to blame for not understanding his abilities/mentality.

Besides his lack of pace, IMO he doesn't have the mentality for a top club.

Lyon is a good move for him

United announce results in £'s so it doesn't matter what we paid for him in euro's. Think we paid about £25m with the £ been a lot stronger at the time and we'll probably re-coup somewhere between £15-18m for him with the weaker £ benefitting United this time round.

Well that and the fact he has so far proven that he is not cut out for the Premiership.

What an absolutely atrocious signing he has turned out to be. Oh how we all laughed when that thread about Bellion and Depay was made! How apt it turned out to be.

We all thought LVG would act like a father figure and bring out the talent and potential he has. What a waste that turned out to be.

I think he'd do a pretty decent job for a upper midtable side if he can accept playing at that level.

Of course he can. He'd worked with him before so was in a much better position than some people on the Internet to judge whether he was good enough.

Crap fee tho. You would think Leicester, Stoke etc would be interested and willing to pay more.

I'm not sure why anyone think's a prem club would go anywhere near this lad. He's shown a crap attitude on the pitch whenever he has been given a chance and been poor. We're looking to recoup a lot of the money we paid and prem teams wouldn't pay half of what we paid up front.

Only been linked to Everton and they only wanted him on loan though. Not enough interest for us to ask for a lot of money

Nice.

Different league might do him some good, maybe the Prem was too much for him.

Maybe PL teams were interested but Memphis probably prefers a team that could vie for the league and play in Europe over teams that barely get out of bottom half

Surely not comparable to Veron? I have some very happy memories of Veron and although it ultimately didn't work out for him here and he came with huge expectation, there was never a question of poor attitude, either at the time or since.

#Depay is close to the @OL ! Lyon sent a nearby offer 18.5 M € (including bonus). Player already agree

I can't wait to unfollow him on social media. I mean technically I could do that anytime but it will be more satisfying once he's left.

Also Veron was decent, he helped us win the league.

I honestly don't see him going anywhere while JM is manager of us.

Most people wanted him solely because he scored 28 goals in all competitions the season before signing. I can almost guarantee that the vast majority had never actually seen him play on more than a couple of occasions. At the time I said any excitement was premature until we'd seen him in the Premier League and obviously that excitement never came.

I would like to think that Van Gaal and our scouts would do far more extensive research on a player than a random excitable fan. They surely delve into the strengths and weaknesses of his physical and mental attributes; looking particularly at how they'd fit into the Premier League and the pressures of playing for one of the world's biggest clubs. Therefore I think to absolve LVG of criticism is a bit naive. He knew the player inside out from managing the National team, presumably watched him play in a few dozen games start to finish and should therefore have had a far better idea of what we were purchasing.

Looking at him as a player I genuinely can't believe that he got through this hopefully rigorous recruitment assessment. He isn't quick, he isn't technically proficient, his short passing is inconsistent, his crossing isn't great, he isn't great at skilfully beating his man and he can't shoot when under pressure from a defender. The only skill that looks transferable from his time at PSV would be his set pieces, but even that is mitigated by much better goalkeepers.

But it happens that some players don't pick up in a new league irrespective of managers. Memphis looked good in the World Cup and had 2 good seasons for PSV so much that PSG and Liverpool were looking to sign him

Managers knowing players don't really work a lot. Emery knew Krychowiak and many on here thought he was world class yet he looks worse than Schneiderlin for PSG. Sometimes people just don't make the step up to a bigger club.

Maybe we prefer to send him out of the league, maybe he wants to go back to the continent or maybe those two clubs are not at all interested in him.

It actually sounds from the rumors the only club interested in buying him right now (others wanted a loan move) was Lyon and feck it, the fee really does not matter, not like the club is going to go bankrupts because it only got 14.5m for Depay.

I have never been so excited about an imminent Lyon signing.
