Memphis Depay | Corinthians player

It's amazing how maybe whilst we are suggesting people aren't utd quality, anyone thought some of these players are too good for us? This place is turning out to be an attackers graveyard and before someone's says 'but Rom' I'd say in a more attacking side, he'd have been competing for golden boot....
No.
This has been obvious for a while..

No attacking player can look good at United. This lad is proof of that.
I'm pretty sure Lyon are a much better coached team than us and would probably give us a very hard time if we played them so no point scoffing at the French league.
He is could also be proof that not everybody can handle the vigours of the EPL, especially the pace of the game.
He's a player whose brain works a fraction of a second too slowly for the Premier League.

Very good if you give him a little bit of time and space. Clueless if you don't.

If he came back to the PL or even if he went to Spain, you'd see him struggle again.
I suspect the same.
He was pretty poor for the first half of the season, but he's finished strongly. I wouldn't get too excited about him though, he still doesn't look top class.
Agreed. Unless people can state what aspects of his game look better, then I don't see the point. He hit form at the end of the season after being benched, due to not being good enough for a while. This is in Ligue 1

Better goals and assists per minute ratio than Mbappe in the league. If ever there was proof that stats aren't everything.

His game is predicated on his athleticism. His athleticism wasn't good enough in the PL for him to boss it the way he can in the French league. It was clear as day. He looked world class in the EL, he looked like a donkey in the PL. Why? The defenders in the PL were as athletic as him, so they could keep pace.

He is not playing as winger nowadays. He is probably best playing as a second striker

Memphis is doing amazingly well all of the sudden. He has grabbed a lot of points for Lyon. He needs to keep this up another year and show himself in the champions league as well. I hope Athletico will pick him up after that.

Top teams will probably wanna wait for 1 more year, if he keeps playing like his last 10 games (world class) they will jump on him, the problem will be that he will be worth much more money.
The reason he's playing so well (not just some random spur) the last 10 games Memphis (first by Koeman) got placed more central, not really a striker more a 10/shadow striker. In those last 2 months he's been Ligue 1 best player without a doubt, if he can do that 1 full season, he's gonna make another mega transfer (unless a team gonna pick him up this summer).

He’s playing in the same league where Mario Balotelli just scored 18 goals. No doubt Depay’s ego was bruised following the complete and utter failure of his M7 brand at Old Trafford and he’s working hard to try and rectify that. Good for him and long may he continue to prosper where he is.

However, I really don’t think the difference between Ligue 1 and Premier League defences can be too overstated. Parking the bus, playing for the draw and hopefully nicking a win has become the norm against the top 6. Nobody gives you an inch and that’s why Depay was ultimately smothered out.

I’d say this lad is my most disappointing signing post Fergie. I completely bought into the hype at the time about him being the next Robben/Ronaldo

Maybe the club at the time was too big for him.

He's doing better than I thought he ever would honestly. It's probably because of the central role he plays now. He was never really a winger, since his dribbling isn't good enough and he's too bulky. I'm still unconvinced he can be a world class player, but you can't deny he's having a fantastic season.

There is still a quality player in there but the gulf between the PL and the french league is massive. His next destination will probably be spain....maybe atletico or valencia.

He plays as a winger at Lyon regularly. Mariano is their striker, with Fekir in the 10.

Oh, really? I thought that they put him down as a striker for the last two months..

On and off but it hasn’t been a particularly regular thing. I missed a couple of games towards the end of the season so he might have been up front then, but it hasn’t been a full time thing. Traore has also been switching in from the wing sometimes, and has had a good season for them.

Maybe they'll jump on Thauvin 1st

LVG did try him as second striker in second season. For all of his criticisms, he was quite good in identifying talent.

So it's our fault, even though you state that he had a poor attitude and didn't perform? Right.

Didn't say he had a poor attitude, I'm saying that his attitude is very similar to most young players and it's a pity we/him didn't work on it more.

The space in Ligue 1 is huge compared to the PL.

Just look at his 3rd goal the other night, the fullback had pushed up high and Memphis was all by himself just walking back.

Suddenly Lyon overturn the ball and he's got miles of space in the channel, they pop an easy through ball and he dinks it over the keeper, the fullback is nowhere near him.

He never got that sort of time and space in England, no wonder he's having a laugh over there.

We let him go too soon. There are players at United that have underperformed for years and have still been given chances. Memphis wasn't given a proper chance and perhaps people were demanding too much too soon.

He is red hot. People saying French league is inferior - do you have the same opinion if we were to sign Fekir ?

He is on red hot form. not the same. He was benched a few months ago. imagine what Lingard would do in that league? Some of the goals Lingard scored in the EPL, Memphis would've tripped over attempting them. Fekir does give me some doubt, so I would need to see his individual skills. Memphis is not very quick, nothing special dribbling, limited strength/power, inconsistent finishing. Simply does not show the attributes that convince me. I have seen some of his goals and feck me the defending is often shocking. They literally stand off him and he pokes the ball past the defenders who make no attempt to dive in, sometimes turning their backs and I have seen suspect keeping in some of them too. Nice, PSG, Villareal, Toulouse, Nantes goals were bangers though. Its looks like he is having an easy time and enjoying himself back like in Holland and I can attribute that to the lackluster defending and space he is being given. Unless he can learn to beat his man or develop rapid pace, I don't see how he will create the space he needs to get his shots off over here. We saw how easy defenders stood him up over here and in France they look appalling and show no heart. Its like he was "best player in Europe" in Holland, came up a level, bombed, went down a level and he is suddenly the best player again. He probably thinks he is back to his best but I feel those around him should warn him not to be delusional and think that as he may get a shock if he moves too soon. He should keep working on himself as I know he will, maybe move to an Italian club 1st, a champions league team or someone like Athletico, Villareal, Valencia or even Dortmund, prove himself there and maybe look at a powerhouse afterwards. We see even Dembele is struggling under the expectation at Barca. Its a different world at these clubs.

Thauvin and Memphis in the leagues top 3 scorers....fecking hell.

It has been a full time thing since beginning of April, so almost 2 months. It's because at the end of March he started as a striker for the Netherlands, and did really well. He started as a striker right away in his first game for Lyon after that international break, and his scoring streak kept going since. After that game Lyon switched tactics to 2 forwards instead of 3 to accomodate him better. Mariano hasn't played much since beginning of April.

I can't describe his role as winger. Wide forward with license to constantly cut inside, leaving that position to ghost into the box... sure. Even still today, him, carrying the ball from deeper position is not that good, as he is not rapid or elegant. So basically very Hulk esque, just opposite wing and opposite stronger foot.

If you take 1 goal less and not looking at assists, you see Balotelli Falcao with 18 goals

In football there are levels, he is a ligue one player, that’s his level, same thing for balotelli

The mid table in ligue one for both

I disagree to downplay Lyon as just mid table and their players' level is just that with no room to improve. It may be the case Memphis joined us too soon while in reality he should have taken smaller step up first.

Memphis has been best centrally for Lyon. He's not going to get that role here. Would be a waste to re-sign him only to put him as a sub on the left for Sanchez.
If we can pull a Morata, then it's not a waste (for the club). Help us with something during a season then we make a profit.

Want to see him play in Champions League first before we entertain the idea of activating his buy-back clause.

I would take back Zaha before contemplating taking Depay back

This.

Zaha is quality going forwards, doubt he is defensive enough for our boss though. I'd entertain Mahrez on the right too. Leicester would sell to us I think. I am an old romantic dreaming of the Man Utd of old with wing play that turns teams inside out. Two good wingers hide underperforming midfielders, certainly makes their job easier.

In his first interview here at United Depay Insisted he was a forward. It's a surprise to me how well he is doing now; but looking back at the interviews and some of the stuff LVG said about him finding his right position- things do make a little bit more sense.

Rashford, Martial and Memphis are all Strikers. All of them have this similar frustrating style of play at LW/LM where they bring a overambitious, almost kiddish style of football as if they lack the core ability and understanding of the way to be a winger.

What has happened at United in my eyes is that every young player who can dribble, who has a strong foot is attempted to turn in to the next cristiano ronaldo. Anyone who can even remotely dribble well is placed out wide so they can take on their defenders, cut in and shoot. The unimaginative cutting in of martial, the strong ronaldo like shots of Rashford - There players have far more skill to be utilised that merely utilised as Ronaldo's shadow. Plus that style of football is quite outdated itself.

I reckon we will take a chance on resigning memphis- but not under Jose thats for sure. However if end up with a manager who wants to try the likes of Martial, Rashford, Lukaku, up front in partnerships and not as targetmen who feed off wingers (again an outdated style) - then memphis could potentially seem like a very solid option for a reduced buy back price.

Lyon have played 8 games since the beginning of April, and Diaz has played in 5 of them. I’m not saying Depay hasn’t featured a lot, but Diaz and Traore have been playing a big role too. I really haven’t noticed Lyon playing Depay as their main striker that much, although I don’t spend a lot of time studying their tactics during games tbh.

Diaz only started 1 out of those 5 games, so 1 out of 8. I don't think that's much, especially as before that he was the first choice striker and top scorer who played basically everything. Depay wasn't necessarily the only main striker in all those, as tactics switched to two strikers with Depay And Traore, instead of a forward 3 with Diaz.
