Matthijs de Ligt | Red Devil

Has the eyes of Robinho when realized, signing for Manchester City.

ANyway, that is a cracking shirt. Love that off-white color (on the picture).

It's how the youths of today pose for profile pics.

Extremely pleased with these two signings, proper corner turned for our defence during this window.

Has to be said that all 3 kits, plus the training tops and the pre-match warm up top are all excellent this year. Almost tempted to buy one, probably will for the kids just to annoy their mum

But he's not youth anymore. Age-wise.

Anyway, yeah. These two signings do somehow lift up my mood for the new season.

And holly sh**t, you're right. THe new kits are incredible. That blue one is just awesome.

Respectfully, not my assessment of him at all.

Starting out at Ajax he was seen early on as a potential generational defensive talent. A fact underlined by him becoming the first defender to win the Golden boy award and the youngest captain in Ajax’s 118 year (at the time) history. He was part of the team, as captain despite being 18, that went to the Europa final and then the CL semi-final. When he went to Juve, becoming the most expensive teenage defender of all time, there was a mad scramble for his signature amongst European heavy weights. Eventually landing at Juve courtesy of the late Mino Raiola.

At Juve, despite being 19, he was under the microscope and heavy pressure. He was brought in to play alongside - and learn from - Chiellini, who promptly tore his ACL soon after De Ligt’s arrival. Every mistake and error was magnified and he played under three different coaches in three different defensive systems across his three years there. Despite that, he won a scudetto, and in his last season there played more minutes than any other outfield player.

With Juve restructuring financially and needing to raise funds, the door was opened to a potential move and Bayern parted with big money to sign a player who was still only 22. A player who had had his highs and lows and performed well, and would only be considered a disappointment by those who had unrealistic expectations of a player so young.

At Bayern he has won a Bundesliga and made the Bundesliga team of the season during his two years there. Bayern fans, en masse, have said he is their best defender and have been hugely opposed to his sale. Going as far as to organise a petition against the impending move.

There is no doubt that Bayern aren’t selling him due to performances, they are selling him purely for financial reasons, with him being on big wages in a squad that needs reinvestment and has decent options at CB to weather his departure. It’s still not a move Bayern would want to make under normal circumstances.

And this is where United come in. They’ve been in for him since his Ajax days, and see a very unique opportunity to get a top class, and potentially world class, CB in for an incredibly reasonable fee. He addresses a need in the squad and is undoubtedly the best CB available on the market this summer.

I think it is fair to say that on face value his reputation as one of the best young defensive talents of his generation has slightly waned over the last four years. A superficial assessment aided by him losing his place in the NL side under Koeman. A fact many attribute to him being scapegoated for his red card at the last Euros and NL going out.

But when placed into the context of his circumstances at both clubs (three managers at Juve in 3 years, 2 at Bayern in 2 years), his young age at the time, the little injuries and knocks he picked up limiting game time in a couple of seasons, and the unrealistic expectations put on his shoulders because of the level he showed at 17/18; then it’s easy to see that the dimming of reputation is, as I said before, fairly superficial. When fit and given a run in the side, De Ligt has routinely been amongst his club’s top performers wherever he’s been, and is now coming to an age where you might expect a defender to start to show the sort of maturity that takes them up another level.

For context on his age, Van Dijk, at the same age had just completed his first season at Southampton and was still a year and a half away from making his transfer to Liverpool. It’s genuinely quite rare to see top, top level defensive talents under 24, because there is a certain maturity required to play the position well.

Spending big money on young defenders requires patience because they will inevitably make mistakes and those mistakes will be magnified due to the scrutiny over their fees. Just look at Stones, who was a laughing stock for ages at City, but with maturity became one of the best CBs in the league, if not Europe. Just look at the trajectory of Gabriel at Arsenal from 24 to 26. Huge leap in performance levels. It’s why William Saliba is such a freak. A genuinely world class defender at 23. It’s hard to remember other defenders besides Varane and Ferdinand, who were achieving the same performance levels at that age. I’m sure there are some, but it’s the exception, not the norm.

De Ligt turned 25 in the last couple of days.. He’s already won the league in 3 countries and made league team of the season in two. He has bucket loads of big club, big match, and champions league experience, and has all the tools to take the next step from being top class, to becoming genuinely world class. There’s no guarantee of that outcome, but in terms of explaining his transfers and the demands for his services, it’s very, very easy to see why.

I think a much more reasonable question from you wouldn’t have been “how does this guy keep getting big transfers?”, but instead “why weren’t more clubs in for him at that price?”. And the answer my friend, is that he only wanted United.

Indeed, looking at Madrid going into the new season with Nacho gone, Alaba still crocked, and only Rudiger, Militao, and Vallejo to man the ramparts, why on earth weren’t Madrid in for him at just 45m euros? Perhaps PTSD from the Yoro spanking, and not wanting to go another round? Whatever it was, he’s a player of the age, quality and profile who would’ve fit like a glove at Real.
Good post, thanks for the insight. Good to read.

Bought my grandson the new United kit from the store at ot few days back. £50 including the socks. Got bummed on the printing at £20. Though the kit itself was priced nicely.

Wasn't Ten Hag Ajax manager from 2017 - 2022?

Yes hopefully. And changing every season probably didn’t help his development as a player. At Juventus he didn’t have top coaches in Sarri and Pirlo, the decline as a team was obvious and they haven’t been champions since. At Bayern it maybe could have turned out differently if Nagelsmann had stayed, he bought him and liked him. But now every year a new coach with new ideas and wanting his own players probably didn’t help him. Hopefully we can find some stability here now, although with Ten Hag this will be a tight rope if he makes the season or not and may stay or not.

Also lets not forget that De Ligt wanted to leave Juventus. Juventus actually was in process to renew his contract but in an interview he openly had doubts because of the lack of results after his first season. Which Bonucci also had comment about after his departure.

Quoting:
"Asked if he was surprised by De Ligt's departure from Turin, Bonucci said to La Gazzetta dello Sport: “No, because some of his statements made it clear that he didn't want to stay at Juventus."

Also worth noting that he was bang on the money to doubt Juve’s future, they’ve been utterly shite since he left and it appears he knew full well it was going that way, hence why he wanted out.

I know the aim of this post is just to be as positive as possible for applause but it's far too one sided. If you go back and look at old Reddit threads as to why he wasn't playing more last season it's a very mixed bag and doesn't at all agree with your assessment of him being seen as their best defender. Some blame it on Tuchel focusing on vertical passers but most are saying Upa and Kim were the better defenders and passers.

Personally I think he's a great signing and a good defender but he isn't close to showing himself as a top defender yet. I've no doubt he'll easily be our second best defender but we don't need to big up all new signings to such ridiculous levels.

I've always thought this guy was class, just hope he can settle into the PL quickly (like Licha did)

Wesley Sneijder on his move...

He said: “I don’t know… I thought the Bundesliga suited him well at first. I had a good feeling about that. I think England is much more physical, with big and fast players. I don’t know, I find it difficult to estimate."

Van Basten...

He said: “I hope for the best for him, because he is indeed a very nice and fun guy. But if you see his progression from Ajax… first to Juventus and then to Bayern Munich, he has not improved much in the few years that he has been abroad. That has to improve.”

But apparently Scholes doesn't know what he's talking about according to Caf experts..

Seems like he has a lot of doubters so he must definitely take it as a challenge and prove them wrong.

Van Basten...

But apparently Scholes doesn't know what he's talking about according to Caf experts..

Neither of those are saying the same thing as Scholes.

Sneijder says he’s surprised he’s moving from the Bundesliga and thinks the EPL will be harder but reserves judgement on whether he will make the transition.

Van Basten hasn’t made a judgement on his quality or ability, he’s just said that he hasn’t kicked on since his Ajax days. He was considered a top class defender then and he’s considered the same now. He’s played under 8 coaches in 8 years and I’m sure if probed Van Basten would confirm his potential.

What Scholes said was objectively untrue. He hasn’t been second choice behind Dier at all, he’s been on the bench behind him twice, once rested after the Arsenal match and the second time when he was coming back from injury and needed to be eased back in.

Well damn, looks like we've made another awful signing.

Maybe we should sign up Sneijder, Van Basten, Scholes, Fowler and Sherwood to run and manage the club? Then they can sign the players that we should get excited about!

Van basten and sneijder criticism is fair and something I said myself. But saying that dier is playing ahead of him or like souness said (he is light weight) is kind of stupid

I remember him having some rough time in Juventus (there was a period where he was at fault for few penalties and generally looked pretty shaky). Still, he was like 20 at the time. I mean I expect Yoro to be the same even if he becomes new Ferdinand in the end.

Concerns about faster and more physical league are valid. That is the part we all need to see. More physical not so as I believe he loves to get stuck in, but it will definitely be more faster than anything he encounter in his career. In a game against City when Bayern lost 3-0 at Etihad I thought he was brilliant despite heavy loss and playing in almost suicidal high line (Upamecano was an absolute disaster).

Still, for such a fee, no brainer of a transfer. The potential upside is still there and too high to ignore while even this version of him is a really quality defender.

In the same program Sneijder also said:

“I really wish him that. I experienced him when he just joined the Dutch national team. Very eager to learn and he was at the front every day. I like that, he has a good head with a good mentality. I wish him the best," Sneijder continues.

And Gullit said in the same program:

Gullit spoke to a former teammate of De Ligt about the situation. "Giorgio Chiellini was lyrical about him and he also thought it was strange that he did not play for the Dutch team. I also think he is such a nice boy. I wish him so much. I really hope he succeeds. This is the Premier League, then you have to get to work."

Amongst all the usual non-intelligent cohort of Sky Sports so called 'expert ex-footballers' Sherwood strikes me as a particularly thick, bitter and morose pundit. They just need to be ignored.

the ex dutch players comments are fair, Scholes said he failed in Juve & BM and was second choice to Dier, which is objectively untrue, Sourness said De Ligt is lightweight, De Ligt is 6`2 & weighs close to 90kg, that's heavyweight in fighting sports ffs, Scholes & Souness' comments are simply untrue and has no value, at least someone like V.Baasten pointed out a valid issue like De Ligt not progressing from his Ajax days which is something De Ligt needs to actually do and work on.

I think a big part of why he hasn't progressed from his Ajax days is that he chose the wrong moves.

I can see why he thought going to Italy would be a wise choice, but it was a poor fit at Juve. Same with Bayern, arrived during one of their most turbulent periods in recent memory. Tuchel also didn't really suit him stylistically.

I think a positive to remember is that he's just turned 25, so it's not like he's missed the boat in that respect. Vidic was 24 when he joined United from the Russian league. Van Dijk was playing in Scotland at 24.

He's already a good level, but there's still time for him to grow and improve further.

Exactly, he has a room to grow, and he needs to really work hard, PL is not an easy league, but he has the tools to excel.

To be fair, De Ligt is a huge upgrade on Maguire, Lindelof and Evans. He has his best years potentially ahead of him.

Even if he does not go on and improve on his Bayern form, we have massively raised the floor for a fee that is ridiculously low really.

I‘m predicting he will become a fan favorite. We love physical players and he is a great passer

Just turned 25 and already played at Bayern, Juve and Ajax.
Where was van Dijk at 25 ?

De Ligt still has the best years ahead of him.

What a fella!

It's an odd situation where so many here are so sure about him, while ex players and the media are not. I wonder whether the reaction here would be the same if he'd gone to another club.

Bayern fans seem furious that he was sold.
To me, that's more important that soundbites from ex players or bias media.

Would you stop being a moaner if the players and the media also hyped him up? Probably not. So why does it matter what they say?
