Matthijs de Ligt | Red Devil

What is an error classed as? There's clips in the replies of him getting skinned.
I only see one clip where Jesus skins him, not sure if you found more. But surely having watched Maguire for years you must know what an error means? If in doubt, there's tons of compilations of errors from Maguire over on YouTube you can refer.

Things like him giving the ball away under no pressure or playing the pass to the opposition in a dangerous area or pulling down his own teammate in the box, take your pick.

“Has to start for the money”, ahead of two players in Maguire and Yoro who cost more than him.

Sherwood, Souness and Scholes think he’s going to be shite, which couldn’t be a stronger suggestion that he’ll be amazing to be honest. Lazy, thick as mince pundits who haven’t called anything right in as long as I can remember.

Can’t wait to see him absolutely boss it and show these gowls up for the spoofers they are. Again.

For those not sold on De Ligt, go visit any Bayern forum. They are fuming that he’s been sold. They all thought he looked great when played and wasn’t given enough chances. This is a steal, especially at the price.

Tbf, many Bayern fans (aside with the decision to sell him) are fuming with how little money they got. Saw someone saying that the price for both Mazraoui and de Ligt should be the actual price for de Ligt. His stock has fallen down a bit, but our negotiating team stood firm and got us a great deal tbf. £42.7 including add ons is at least 10-15 million less even if his standing took somewhat a hit looking at the prices for which CB's are going these days (or what Everton is asking for Branthwaite). In short, I agree with everything you said after, it is a great price for a defender of his calibre.

Think thats silly when their first choice CB who they got last summer and has lead to De Ligt leaving was signed for £43 million

They're getting more than they paid for their first choice #1 defender for selling their backup to Upamecano who is the same age as De Ligt and they could have sold either of them. They chose De Ligt and Upemacano played more last season. Speaking of which they signed Upemacano for just under £37 million. So again they're getting more for their backup than they paid for their starters and the ones they wanted to keep

Now this doesnt change that it seems like a good fee from United's side. But also from Bayern's side thats some incredible business on the other CB signings that more than make up for taking a loss on De Ligt's signing and sale.

Yeah I saw Martinez do the same on Saturday. Just wondered what the 'stat' meant.

I mean de Ligt, Martinez and Yoro is absolutely class

What a day!

The false reporting of this transfer is scandalous. Sky said it was 60m pounds! Clowns saying he failed at Bayern and was kept out by Dier even though it takes 10 seconds of googling to realise that's a lie.

Really happy with this signing. As of this season I think he'll be a more important signing than Yoro.

They did the same with Licha and said he cant hack in the premier league. We all know how that turned out. I am confident it will be the same with Matthijs.

He's definitely an outstanding player with the potential to be even better. Due to his exceptional talent, he has played for both Juventus and Bayern Munich, both of which are at the highest level of play. When players transfer to teams like that early in their careers, especially with such hyped potential, supporters fail to recognize the need for continued development. People expect the new clubs' training and culture to instantly result in an increase in performance to world-class levels. This is rarely the case, especially with central defenders. The issue is not that they do not grow; rather, the player receives far greater attention. Consistency becomes a greater focus, which leads to supporters ultimately realizing that their young gem doesn't quite yet have the consistency needed to become world class. I don't even think this is necessarily a flaw De Ligt has suffered from. He just hasn't stood out as exceptional in top class teams, which is an expectation people should not have had for a young defender, as that is particularly rare. With experience comes growth, particularly when defending against space. Something which in modern football, fans of big clubs are not the most patient with, particularly in defence.

Do they do this when other clubs make signings? I'm not arsed enough to tune in to their dross
Not necessarily. They all have a special hatred for United. Also if they make comments like this, it gets them exposure. They dont care if its right or wrong.

I think at this point we can say we've pushed the boat out to sign CBs who want to play out from the back and fit that system. As for people talking about Maguire, while he was our best CB last season and isnt getting enough credit for that... The fact remains that he's a bit slow and while on paper he might be as good as De Ligt, not having that weakness is going to mean he's better when we want to push our CBs higher up the pitch. Thats the only thing I really dispute with Sherwood's comments - theres a grain of truth in that De ligt's standing is diminished and he obviously rates maguire and lisandro highly which is why hes saying he doesnt think de ligt is better. Thats his opinion

If you think about Kim, he was hugely underwhelming. Am speaking from Bayern fans perspective or many of them that feel he is their best defender and who were against this selling.
In their eyes, if you are selling your best defender, then the selling fee should compensate for losing him. And it doesn't. Honestly, am not sure who could watch both Upamecano and de Ligt in big games (or Kim in his 1st season) and decide that de Ligt is the one you need to rid, huge wages or not.

Agree that Bayern made some really smart signing (and they will be fine because their squad has immense quality all around), but de Ligt market value is definitely higher than what we paid in the end. Massive wages probably helped, but again, a lot of credit should go to our negotiating team.

Poor. Basically we gave them de Ligt at a fair price but opted to give them Mazraoui for free as a gift.

Horrible decision.

Sure de Ligt is no Maldini/Baresi/Beckenbauer but 45 m?

etc...

Can someone who’s more familiar explain why UK media absolutely abhors United? In the US the most popular teams tend to have the opposite treatment, where media will constantly favor and overrate them in everything they do as it’s in their favor for the big media markets.

Feels like it’s the opposite in the UK, where it feels like it’s pulling teeth to have any pundit compliment us

So the UK football media is largely made up of former players and managers, or young sports journalism upstarts looking to make their way.

A lot of the former had their careers ruined by Fergie. They felt they could’ve won stuff but weren’t good enough to play for a United side that dominated throughout their careers.

All of the latter had their childhoods ruined by Fergie, who won everything while they bitched and moaned about ref bias and time added on.

Of the few remaining, there are a couple of good pundits who are secure enough in their own skin to call the job properly, and there are a few ex United players who are just so horrendous at the job as to come across as badly as the first two groups.

The abject mismanagement of United over the past decade and a half, has helped nurture a confidence in the first two and fourth group of pundits, whereby a career can be forged in shitting on the club, while saying anything positive is seen as a risk not worth taking.

The trend of our own fans lapping up and regurgitating the negative spin has only served to legitimise such awful journalism and analysis, and in my opinion, has contributed as much to the difficulty we find in selling players, as the much documented mistakes made in contracts and wages.

Yeah I saw Martinez do the same on Saturday. Just wondered what the 'stat' meant.
You mean for their goal? To be honest, I assumed the tweet was talking about unforced errors. I don't think getting skinned can be counted as an unforced error.

But fair enough, I don't know what criteria they used.

He obviously knows De Ligt and Mazraoui from Ajax but he's not worked with Zirkzee or Yoro.
According to the caf anyone from Holland, has been to Holland, has an Eredivisie FM or FIFA save, owns any orange clothes or likes Gouda cheese is a Ten Hag signing.

I mean... The same people decided that who signed him didnt they?

And sure the manager has changed and keeps changing but does the new manager Kompany really have a say in it? It'll be the backroom staff and the board who both signed him and then sold him so I dont know, what you're saying suggests incompetence but if thats the case they wouldnt have signed a CB that the fans feel that way about.

Again same thing with the wages. They signed him with those wages. Its their incentive to sugar coat everything and and say it was a successful transfer trying to secure their own jobs and theyve chosen to sell at a loss because they think they have better CBs and could use the cash. While De Ligt wanted to leave Juventus, in this case clearly Bayern were happy to sell De Ligt. He had not met their expectations and they are at peace with letting him go.

I mean... The same people decided that who signed him didnt they?

Nope, it's not the same people. They changed their sports director and people in charge of transfers. So, people who opted to sell him now are not the same who brought him there.

Btw and for what is worth, he never deserved the wages he was on in Bayern. Which was probably one of the main reasons they decided to move him. It still doesn't change a simple fact, that (by all accounts) we got him for a really good price.

Exciting signing! Comes with quite a bit of pedigree so hopefully he gives us the defensive upgrade that we need. Unclear if he's really ready to go since he hasn't had a game in ages so I suspect we won't see him start in Friday which would be slightly disappointing but we'll see.

It will be interesting to see how he fits in long term when Yoro is also available.

I forgot he was Ajax captain so young too, so hopefully a good leader in the group.

The pundits reaction to this transfer is plain weird.

I dont think he has gone on to be the player he promised at Ajax.....but that was potentally the worlds best centre back and an all time great. He is a quality defender still and one of three.

The fee is less than Max Kilman cost West Ham,about 30% less than Guehi potential fees to Newcastle, nearly half what we paid for Maguire and only about 22% more than Lindelof several seasons ago and nearly half what Bayern paid for him a couple of seasons ago.....its not a bargain deal but it looks good value in comparison. We have also signed a leader which we have little of in the dressing room.

They are talking like we have spent £60-65m on a player who has fell frim grace like Casemiro. Whether or not he succeeds here the big negative response from media is baffling....reinforces my belief that outside of domestic football, most ofthese pundits are absolutely clueless. The only one that was negative but made some reasonable points was fricking Paul Merson!

Can't say the manager hasn't been backed by INEOS , everyone signed so far bar maybe Yoro have his fingerprints all over
Go read the Sky article from today, finally you guys can accept Ineos are now in control of transfers and we can all move.

De Ligt and Mazraoui in, and AWB and 36.3m Net out, might be the best transfer business I’ve seen at this club in the last 12 years. fecking sensational allocation of resources and negotiation, considering AWB was surplus to requirements, had a year left on his deal, De Ligt only just turned 25 and Mazraoui 26, both are coming from a European powerhouse and are undoubtedly top class; and we were initially quoted close to 75m euros for the pair.

When looking at other deals, to get De Ligt in for 38.5m pounds is so good, it’s almost laughable. To put it in perspective Lindelof and Bailly were signed for just over 31m each, 7 and 8 years ago respectively, as relatively unproven players from Benfica and Villarreal. This is De Ligt, a premier talent, from Bayern, about to enter his prime, for 38.5m.

Some other deals for reference (pounds):

- 26 yr old Maguire: 80m
- 25 yr old Ake: 41m
- 22 yr old Konate: 36m
- 21 yr old Gvardiol: 78m
- 22 yr old Timber: 38m
- 22 yr old Calafiori: 42m

I can go on and on. But chose this spread to show that if you pay for quality and experience, it costs you a massive fee (Maguire). If you pay for quality and potential it costs you a massive fee (Gvardiol). If you sacrifice significant experience at the highest level, or shop slightly lower on the potential scale, you might get a young high ceiling CB in who still had lots to prove (Timber, Calafiori, Konate), or a more experienced squad player (Ake) for about 40m.

What you don’t get for sub 40m is top level experience and track record, top level quality, and development potential. It’s really only just sunk in for me how good of a signing this is at this price point. Truly remarkable when looked at in context. Ashworth, Berrada and co have really identified and seized upon a very unique market opportunity (created by Bayern’s need to reduce wages), and brought home an unbelievable deal for United. In any other summer/market condition, De Ligt isn’t moving for less than 50-60m pounds. As evidenced by his previous 80m and 70m euro transfers to Juve and Bayern respectively.

I’ve so desperately wanted, for so long, to see the club operate with actual, demonstrable intelligence in the market. Showing approaches and yielding results in targeting and negotiations that illustrated cohesive, sophisticated, strategic, critical thinking. I had given up hope as of last year. But the steady stream of changes, appointments, restructuring, and deal making over the last few months has brought a tear to my eye because of the level of competence and progressive decision making. I almost don’t know what to do with myself, or how to view this club anymore.

We’ve gone from being a cretinous clown show, to being some of the most sophisticated and intelligent operators in the market. It’s both utterly wonderful and truly mind bogglingly bizarre at the same time. To think where this club would be today, had an executive team of this quality, and a driven minority shareholder, been in place when SAF retired, doesn’t bear thinking about. A billion of waste likely averted, and a radically different infrastructure.

I see a lot of pundits underestimating this transfer and especially the player. I am fine with that. When he turns out to be the monster we all know he is, it’ll be all the sweeter. I am also very happy for us to quietly plod along, improving the squad with these reasonably priced, low key transfers of genuinely good players with bags of potential, and be the dark horse in the league. No one is expecting much from United this season it seems. Last seasons squad has been written off by most pundits, and our signings such as De Ligt, Mazraoui, and Zirkzee have made very little waves. But that just leaves this squad primed to surprise a lot of people. If we can secure our midfield target(s), I’ll whisper it quietly but I’ll be relatively optimistic for the season ahead.

i'll hold off on my excitement until seeing him play and he gets up to speed trying to find that form he lost during his spell in munich.....the one thing for sure i'll be excited about is never seeing Maguire play for United again

Still a bit concerned about us signing not one but two players from Bayern after they sold us a crocked Schweinsteiger.

I’m clinging onto the fact they hired Kompany as their manager so have quite clearly lost their fecking minds.

De Ligt 4 really just looks right. I've a good feeling about this

Really excited for this signing. Yoro and Zirkzee are both potentially great players, but De Ligt is already a great player. Should have an instant impact on our defense.

the good thing is that they are buying Young players who have shown very good potential or young players who have good experience

We’re definitely gonna be seeing the Maguire/Lindelof wombo combo at some point this season.
Ye hopefully in a caraboa cup game against Wimbledon or Europa league game against some team in Bulgaria.

This really puts things into perspective. Am usually not the one who argues about transfer fees unless it is a case of Maguire where I felt we absolutely broke every logic paying such an amount, but looking at de Ligt, his standing in the game, his profile, age, ability and than compare it with other transfer fees done around Europe or United of old, you have to tip your hat to the new executive team and applaud.

Now, every fee is relative. If the player is huge success, you won't ask later was he 40 or 50 with add ons. You are just happy, you have him. That is the ultimate grade and judgement of every transfer. But, on the other hand, in terms of our executive team, they deserve their praise and how shrewd they operated in their 1st ever window with so many financial constraints. Even managed to show their teeth to Madrid regarding Yoro. There are definitely reasons to be excited about United future looking at this window.
