Matthijs de Ligt | Red Devil

Let's hope he can get off to good start.. Licha had it when he come, and proved them all wrong.. this guy is going to get same treatment , already has, Bayern Fans didn't want him to go,!! That says enough and himself been waiting since June to come, his mind has been here all along, those are the players we need..

Yeah he will right up for those big aways where ex players of those teams have taken cheap shots at him. Been waiting 5 years for this debut to happen and will admit after he went to Juventus I didn't think we would get another chance.

My Newcastle supporting mate has been arguing with me because he thinks Botman and Guehi are both better than De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez.

Not sure how you can win an argument with crazy people.
Guehi.. this is the same guy who played for Swansea, Crystal Palace.. had his Chance in a England shirt did nothing special in that, got caught out once or twice 1 on 1 as well. De ligt .. Ajax, Juventus, Bayern!!! .. enough said..

I don't understand people who said he wasn't good at the Euro's. He was the only England player who didn't get lambasted for underperforming other than Saka. He was very solid and was England's most consistent player.

He wasn't good he was average, he did was asked of him. England took barely any risks, thus leading to little chance creation for opposition teams. Guehi was decent because there was little threat to the CB's and most of his passes were just simple sideways passes, he is a good defender in park the bus and low risk football, but so is Maguire.

De Ligt and Martinez are progressive ball playing CB's that are needed to get a team to the next level, not keep it simple no nonsense CB's like Guehi.

"He did what was asked of him"

What, defend? Average? It's funny, that Lindelof and Rojo and the army of CB's we have had since 2012 have been unable to do that very basic thing.

I'm not saying Guehi is better than De Ligt in any capacity, but to describe a no-nonsense, no mistakes, CB who wasn't visible (which is one of the most important things in a CB) as "average" is bizarre.

If you barely see a CB in action, it means that something right has happened.

Also, have you actually watched De Ligt? He's nowhere near as progressive and ball playing as Martinez.

Lindelof instead of Guehi in that England set up would be fine. All Guehi did was sit back, rarely had much to do and was constantly passing the ball sideways.

De Ligt is not compared to Martinez, but he is compared to Guehi.

A big reason why even those who didn't want De Ligt have not piped up about this signing is largely because it is a very fair deal - one that does not price him as an elite defender, which is what naysayers like myself have been saying.

If he kicks on during his time with us then there's big upside to this deal. To put things in perspective, he's cheaper than Maguire and Martinez.

Guehi/Branthwaite at ~£65M are huge risks and there's little reason to pay the absurd PL tax.

 In the very first game he got drawn in and then his man he had followed ran in behind him to score against England. He made a mistake on day 1 and he was among the other England defenders who made mistakes together in other goals.

In Spain's first goal he's the deepest defender and not covering inside Shaw where he should be which is why Carvajal can find Lamal in his inside position initially. Then he turns his back running back towards his own goal some more, when he finally turns and starts to think about confronting Lamal thats when he puts the ball onto the wing and Williams finishes from there. Its the kind of defending Lindelof does afraid of confronting the ball - and then to top it off Oyarzabal comes on up front. Theres a ball played into his feet between Stones and Guehi and Guehi comes over to try and apply a bit of pressure but he's already passed it on first time before he gets close to him. Then Oyarzabal makes a run after his pass onto the wing and receives a 1 - 2 and Geuhi hasn't tracked him properly, hasnt got goalside and Oyarzabal can tap home the winner.

He managed to be too much of a coward on the first goal and then switch off and lose the run of the player he had got tight to for the second goal. And yes both goals also come from a player on the left wing so there's blame on the RB area too. Mainly the 2nd goal because he couldnt have received his one two pass if a rightback was in position to put pressure on him. But in the first goal its the other way around and its his poor defending that then leads to a chance on the left where someone else could bail him out and they didnt. That one was his mistake first and foremost.

He had good games against Serbia, Denmark, Slovenia and Slovakia. Was average against Switzerland and Netherlands and was terrible against Spain. He wasn't Englands worst player but he's definitely been overhyped after the tournament.

Spain was the only team we played this tournament that we'd actually need our defenders to do a lot and the only team we played that would dominate possession against us.
