Matthijs de Ligt | Red Devil

Currently out for drinks with my Bayern supporting mate. He's fecking fuming at this. This is terrific.

I used to pray for times like this.

Every ex-English player turned genius TV pundit has been pooing on this deal...

All but certifies for me that we've made the right choice and that he'll be a success here

That lot would prefer us giving Maguire a new contract 100% or waxing lyrical if we had spent almost double on Branthwaite or £60m on Guehi

Hope this one works out, have a feeling it might. Went for over £70 million at a young age, now he's signing for us for £38 million + add ons taking it to £42.7. Its not too far off being half that initial fee and he's still just 25, so that says plenty about how much hype and perceived potential there was about him before and how much less of a standing he has in the game now.

I could easily be proven wrong by this in the future, but I think we got him at a good price and he will prove to be worth a fair bit more than £38 or £42.7 million. I think he will do very well for us but I wont be surprised if there are some posters who are never convinced by him because there are times when he doesnt have a lot of composure and his technique isnt always the best. With the mindset that defenders all need to play out from the back, be cool and calm and have a good technical level I'm not sure he hits the mark for that "modern CB". Me personally? I think its good if you have 1 CB like that, I dont think you need 2. And we have Lisandro and Yoro looks like he might be another who grows into that. So as long as De Ligt is winning the ball, clearing the ball out of the area and occasionally playing a nice pass which he does at times I'll be happy with him

He turned 25 yesterday and has already played for Ajax, Juventus, Bayern and now joins United. Arguably biggest clubs in some of the best leagues in Europe, it's really impressive. But I think most important thing is he hasn't fully proved his ability so far in his career so surely is motivated to do that at United.

Do any of these pundits remember that we had to play Casemiro at center half quite a bit at the end of the season?

Another one who just went with the narrative it seems. More and more apparent that none of these guys watch football outside the PL and just go with whatever the online narrative is.

Oh well, just feed the negativity I guess. All the more motivation for these players to prove these pundits wrong.

He seems to like them traditional clubs.

Tim fecking Sherwood.
With him, Scholesy and Souness already going on about how he's shite, we just need Gabby Agbonlahor to stick the boot in and he's pretty much nailed on to win the Ballon d'Or.

I can't wait to see a de Ligt / Martinez CB partnership. Fantastic on paper because they have different strengths and profiles and should complement each other perfectly, but you never know until you see it. Fingers crossed.

Really pleased with this.Think he'll be a giant for us and can recapture that early class he showed at Ajax.

He may not have worked with him directly but he himself said he knew of Zirkzee very well prior
Knew of.. I'm sure ETH knows of many big talents, especially Dutch ones. Would probably be harder to find ones he doesn't know of. Doesn't make them his signings though. And with the changes that have been made to how we approach these things he's not In the lead anymore, though still involved obviously.

But, but I heard he's too lightweight.....delighted with this, will hopefully be a great signing for us.

Have some respect towards Souness. SAF gets most of the credit for kicking Liverpool off their perch but Souness is an unsung hero in all of that when he was Liverpool's manager. This was the guy who brought to Liverpool the likes of Mark Wright, Rob Jones, Julian Dicks and Nigel Clough. I am actually shocked that there's no statue at United commemorating this.

He hasn't lost it, but people have opinions based on not watching the league.

All pundits barely watch Italian or German football, only when its CL. Yet they continue to spout the same opinion.

He will surprise everyone who doubts him, same as Martinez

Tbf, many Bayern fans (aside with the decision to sell him) are fuming with how little money they got. Saw someone saying that the price for both Mazraoui and de Ligt should be the actual price for de Ligt. His stock has fallen down a bit, but our negotiating team stood firm and got us a great deal tbf. £42.7 including add ons is at least 10-15 million less even if his standing took somewhat a hit looking at the prices for which CB's are going these days (or what Everton is asking for Branthwaite). In short, I agree with everything you said after, it is a great price for a defender of his calibre.

I really, really hope this works out. Love the player and would love to see him do well and prove the doubters wrong!

but isn't his dad fat (sorry, big boned)? Isn't that why the club didn't move for him earlier?

the new guys in charge deserve a lot of praise here. They knew that de Ligt only wanted United, they knew that Bayern needed to get this done soon enough to then work on getting in Tah from Leverkusen. Woodward would have probably paid up earlier in the window, the new guys simply let time work for them until Bayern gave in. Probably saved us a good amount of money in the process.

Turns out having competent people in key positions matters. Who knew?

I see the Talksport managers have already come out and are already questioning him!

Can someone who’s more familiar explain why UK media absolutely abhors United? In the US the most popular teams tend to have the opposite treatment, where media will constantly favor and overrate them in everything they do as it’s in their favor for the big media markets.

Feels like it’s the opposite in the UK, where it feels like it’s pulling teeth to have any pundit compliment us
