The commentator trying to imply the block was a penalty was fecking bizarre.

Just making up some controversy to pile on how shit we were.

Another good performance IMO. When our centre backs are consistently exposed you cannot blame them more occasional mistakes. Even prime Maldini would look bad in that situation.

He was good - good blocks, headers, positioning and when he went over to that right side proved that knowing the game is more important than pace

Another strong performance from him today. Particularly liked how aggressive he was after moving to RCB.

I love him. He loves defending and he is good enough Technically that he is not a liability on the ball.
Defenders like him are the backbone of strong teams.

He's a really good player. Himself and Maguire have both looked excellent lately.

Very good again tonight. Think him-Maguire/Martinez has the makings of a very strong back 3.

His juve stint has made him too risk averse with his passing .
Yep. Very good defensively today, but when was the last time he made a forward pass? I'm sure there's been some in the past 5-6 games, but I can hardly remember any. He, Ugarte, and Mainoo (and Yoro today) play a big part in our struggles in build up.

He's a solid defender, but I don't think he should be the 4th highest paid CB in the league and we could've got better value for that kind of money. We've made far worse signings though (obviously).

I love this guy, I think he's great. He's only going to get better and better for us. He's an absolute monster and perfectly suited to Amorim's back 3. He's a fecking brick wall most of the time, and you can see he's more and more comfortable each match.

We'll need another CB in the summer. Yoro is going to take 2-3 seasons to really develop into a top player, and should be rotated plenty this year and next. De Ligt would benefit from having another top defender back there with him. Martinez is great with the ball at his feet but he's a dodgy defender. Maguire looks excellent in a three, but you'd think getting in someone like Inacio or even Aruajo would really help.

Must admit that I prefer him as one of the wide CBs, but think he looks good wherever we put him on the back line.

I like him A LOT. HE is still new to us and Man United but he has shown some wonderful signs already. No complains so far

Honestly he's not had the praise he deserves, he's been very good for us, especially since Amorim. Him and Maguire.

He was absolutely terrible in the first half, he was one of the main reasons why we were so shit defemsively and it's because he was standing so far off his partners it was painful to watch how bad and exposed he made our defensive line look.

In the second half he improved though, and put amazing display, Vidic esque. Really weird player.

Laughed off the KWP handball and was taking this seriously. So bizarre.

Woeful in the first half, better in the 2nd particularly when he moved to the right with Maguire on.

I think he has now adjusted in the PL pace. I felt at the beginning he was slower in reacting, but now he seems to be better at positioning himself.

There was something he was doing that I didn't understand. I wonder if anyone can explain it?

When Yoro got rinsed a few times - and on the opposite side too, when Martinez got beaten a couple of times - it left the wide attacker running free towards goal, with only De Ligt, as our central defender, between them and the goal.

Every time this happened, he seemed to refuse laterally on the pitch towards them. He carried on backing off along the centre line of the pitch meaning that they got the chance to shoot before he even reached them.

On at least some of these occasions, there was no other attacker he was covering.

Is there some tactical nuance I'm missing where it's better to leave them to attack goal with another defender desperately trailing in their wake?

The only thing I could come up with was that he was desperately afraid of them turning him if he closed them down too quickly. But it seemed a weak explanation to me.

Think he knew Sulemani would likely skin him if he committed so instead he backed off and showed him onto his left foot which I don't think ever really threatened on any of these occasions (don't think it happened often).

It's how Lindelof defends all the time but would give De Ligt the benefit of the doubt here
