Himself and Maguire especially made up for that performance at Goodison. They looked much more comfortable tonight

What was he doing on the 2nd goal, he looked more interested in grabbing hold of the attacker than actually getting to the ball

Can't see him playing much next season. He is too slow for Amorin's system. Back three will probably be Maz... Yoro... Heaven. De Ligt will be backup

Quoting this so you can get your credit if that somehow does end up being our main starting 3 at the back and they do well

I think the odds of that are terrible.

They're both good defenders but they seem to thrive in a more compact team that doesn't take risks. No surprise that they were both excellent when we were down to ten men against Arsenal too. Amorim was alluding to it in his postmatch comments that some players just naturally are better in a low block.

For me I think you can probably get away with having one of them as the main centre back provided that they're flanked by two very quick defenders who can are good at making progressive passes. There are still some concerns though.

Him and Maguire can't play together in back 3 to a high level that Amorim wants. They are far from ideal even as CCB. With a composed, fast CB he can be really good in a back 4 and he showed that, so on paper him and Yoro as a pairing made tons of sense for the future.

I still like him, he gives his all, doesn't shy away when things go tough, is vocal and overall still had some great games for us. It's just that change of formation made life more difficult for him. No way we should thinking about selling him.. If it is way too early to judge Amorim, it is way too early to thinking about selling him, just for different reasons. He is a good defender.

Along with Zirkzee also not selected by Koeman. He's never been very good for Oranje, but calling up Van Hecke instead is a bit of a surprise.

I think we’re a little harsh on him and overall he’s having a good season. He’s passionate, a good leader, absolutely dominant in the air and often along the ground. Like Maguire he can get done for pace (although he is a bit faster).

The reality is one on one MOST CBs can get done by pace and trickery, that’s why attackers that are actually decent are worth the most money.

In our team we disproportionately let attackers have a free run at our CBs. Get a functioning midfield and pair him in a back three with two faster players (Yoro + new CB) and he’ll be great.

Came here to post the same.
Very surprising indeed and will hurt him

But competition is brutal:
- Van Dijk
- De Vrij
- Ake
- Timber
- Van Hecke
- Hato
And Micky van de Ven not even selected (still injured?)

Van Hecke has been doing well for some time now and I think so has De Ligt recently..
Perhaps they rock, paper, scissored for it

Anyone else think him, Yoro and Maguire need to do better on the ball now that Martinez is out? Bruno's been going deeper to try and instigate something and it just leaves us hopelessly outnumbered further up the pitch. When you play with 3 centrebacks and 2 centre midfielders, your central midfielder can't be going deep to take the ball and make progressive passes.

Yes. I have seen signs of it with Yoro at times and it's been encouraging. Maguire has a good long diagonal pass and De Ligt is alright at times but both could be a lot better at how quickly they release the ball.

I like him better as a RCB than a CCB.

He seems too soft to play centrally, more reactive than proactive.
In back 3, the CCB became the last man in defense. He played more reactive as CCB because he doesn’t have the recovery pace to cover lot of ground for his wide CB. But when he plays as RCB, he has more confidence knowing that there is another guy that cover for him so he plays more proactive as RCB.

This is why we need a new CCB. Or May be try Yoro as CCB instead and play de Ligt as RCB.

Mazaroui is a better RCB

Great game. MOTM for me.

Tackles and blocks all over the place, and looks to be learning when to step up effectively from that wide CB position and win the ball in midfield as well.

would like to see

Heaven - De ligt - Yoro, would give us some speed to push up the defensive line.

He was great I thought. Was pushing up high towards the end and winning the ball on the end of their box which was a surprise.

Excellent today, apart from one simple pass he gave away. Dealt with everything and some great challenges

Exceptional today. Some brilliant cross-field pings, where if we had a competent 1v1 creator on the end of them we'd have been feasting.

Dominant defensively and put his body on the line repeatedly. Easy MOTM for me.

Immense today. He did what we need all 3 of our CBs to do-push up when defending and hit forward passes to start attacks in buildup.

He was solid is always typically a 6-7/10 for a defence that is let down by a terrible shape within the system.

Should be MOTM assessing his performance over the full 90.

Best game for the club, controlled aggression, shut down his side very effectively and added some excellent switching passes as well.

Colossal today. This is the De Ligt I remember from Ajax. In this form he’s one of the best CBs around. I’d build the defence around him, Yoro and Heaven then bring in another in the summer.

Incredible performance. The way he eats up ground before diving into a challenge is incredible to watch. He just flies in, wins the challenge and moves on. Gave absolutely everything today, shame about the result.

Easily man of the match, the passes, the tackles and the actual workrate and effort to get up and down the pitch. As Ruben put it you gotta run hard and he certainly did that. Some vital blocks and tackles to boot.
