Mason Mount's Many Misfortunes (please don't make another waste of money post)

It was pretty gutting to see him so visibly upset going off and the way the other players were all trying to comfort him spoke to how much he's been suffering behind the scenes. It's a ruthless business but I'd love to see him get his body back to a state where he can actually play regularly for us.

What the feck! He was bomb-proof at Chelsea.

Caught the bomb now he's held together by a combination of sticky tape and blue tack.

Honestly not sure how our medical department didn't see this coming.

Don’t know if I missed something but again, there is absolutely nothing said about what or how it happened or what the injury is.

Despite his injury record over the past two and a half seasons he's not quite at Reece James level of injury proneness yet. I think the big problem is a lot of what he offers is related to pressing off the ball which requires good physicality and fitness... which he doesn't have right now. For the sake of his career he might need to completely change his play style. Won't be good to us as I guess a large part of why we signed him was for his pressing but he's no good to us in he physios room either.
It hasn't even been two and a half seasons. It's 'only' been a bit over one and a half seasons since he first went down with injury, so there's still some hope that he can get over it. That hope is rapidly dwindling though.

I wonder if we've tried different training methods, yoga, etc?

Something must have happened in the summer of 2023 because the was always available for Chelsea.

Rumours been going round for a while that he has an issue with his hip (I think?) that years ago means he would have had to retire but now will allow him to play but any intensity and he will just have secondary issues consistently and this rumour went around in his last year of Chelsea so does look to have some foundation based on his time here.

See how things develop during the rest of his contract, and don't give him a new one if he hasn't proven he can stay fit. Can't be giving players the Phil Jones treatment anymore.
We should preserve his value!

Ffs. Terminate the contract in Jan and be done with it.

That’d cost around £80m which just won’t happen. £35m amortisation and £45m in wages. Best bet is a sale for a cut price and Mount agreeing to take a wage drop or Utd supplementing.

Even if you could get rid at £20m and pay half his wages you’d still lose almost £40m

No-ones giving us 20m for Mount. He's got a contract until 2028. I'd imagine he'll be here until then.

It's not true that he was always available for Chelsea. He missed plenty of games in his last season.
From an early age his energy was extraordinary and he may have punished his body a bit too much. I remember he nearly beat Utd on his own at Old Trafford when on loan at Derby. I don't know if that game sold him to you guys but I don't remember ever seeing a player put so much effort into a game as he did that night. I think it was a League cup tie.
We are learning you have to physically protect young players. Reece James is probably done as a top defender now and I worry for Mason now.

Our medical department needs as much purging as the first team.

Weren't changes already made to it in the last year or so?

We have an almost full squad now, so we'll have to see how it goes on from now on.

But still, there are some players whose bodies are just beyond help.

at this stage we should just let the medical team run experiments on him to see what may work on other players.

Yeah I think he is another player that is here for the duration of their contract, maybe a loan spell at some stage. Much like Antony and Casemiro the figures involved makes him unsellable.

Maybe he finds a way to stay fit at some point, he’d have his uses in this system but you can’t rely on him and looks like another expensive mistake.

I feel for him. He was probably crying inside when it happened

but as a football club, sell if there is offer.
That is incl Shaw as well
There bodies have given up on them.

Such a shame this guy can't stay fit, I really think this new approach would suit his style of play. What's odd is there wasn't much sign of this before he joined us. A two month injury, unrelated to his current problems, is about the worst he had at Chelsea in 4 seasons. Other than it was it was just the odd game here or there. He played over 50 games for three seasons in a row at Chelsea when he broke though.

His game is high energy with a lot of sprinting which is going to cause issues if he has any serious deep rooted issues. Fingers crossed this has just been bad luck but I don't see how he can play the game he needs to if that is the case.

Just doesn't seem like it's going to work out for him here. Another one who shouldn't be trusted when squad building.

That's probably played a part in why he is how is now, as below:

That mad-hat all out intensity style is not sustainable for many players and once you're breaking down as that kind of player, problems tend to compound until the approach changes.

But if you're renowned for being this high octane, all-action player, re-imagining yourself as something all new and different is a massive challenge and also depends on your ability and skill level.

It's a cruel game.

We simply cannot afford to carry players like Mount and Shaw if we're to be a serious football club once more.

The other issue is that that is what he is good at. Being a terrier. Chasing down players. Being part of an energetic press up the field. Remove that from his game and I think he will be replaced by Amorim.
