FFS, I’m trying not to overreact, but it does feel like we’re in a bit of a pickle…

Going to be a long season.

Karma for signing the wrong player for the wrong position in the wrong system.

It could be a blessing in disguse for him to be out for a while. Give him a chance to work with the coaches on his transition into a no8. There must be alot of video work he can do while hes recovering.

Also takes him out of the firing line while the team tries to get itself working properly.

Would be an ideal opportunity to bring in a new midfielder and try a double pivot system. Seems obvious to all of us that casemiro needs help alongside him and a double 8's midfield with a singke pivot is leaving us too exposedand asking too much of casemiro.

Jesus Christ people, why dont you give him even a bit of chance?

Whats up with all this, he barely played and you all are about him underpeforming, being a dud, waste of funds, a pointless signing, not fit to wear the shirt.

I mean, what's up with this?

I've seen it all at the cafe but this is a new low.
I think a lot of it because it was quite apparent for a lot of us that Mount wasn't the profile of midfielder we needed. What everyone expected was a deep lying playmaker as a partner for Casemiro to connect our defence to attack and help us transition quicker and also make us resistant to high pressing. Mount is exactly the opposite kind of midfielder.

IMO EtH has ditched his original plan(which needed someone like Frenkie De Jong) and wants us to play like Liverpool, full on high pressing, causing turnovers and attacking quickly. Hence his decision to get Mount. But he has implemented it very badly or has not trained the team well to play that style. We are right now caught in between two styles. Our defence is still not high enough to press effectively causing gaps in the midfield.

I think this injury for Mount is going to force EtH to go back to his original plan with Eriksen partnering Casemiro like last season.

How can you draw all those conclusions after 2 games? Its one thing what everyone expected and the other what ETH wants to implement. Sure, we look bad vs Wolves and part of that you can pin to getting back from preseason. But I think we saw some positive things in the 1st half of Spurs game. He has not trained them well, implemented it very badly? You expected everything to be perfect after preseason and 2 games in the league? Seems so many posters draw some conclusions in advance and will go with that relentlessly.
We'll see what happens now, I dont think ETH will just ditch his idea cause Mount is injured cause that would be mad.

Redcafe posters celebrating Mount not having a massive impact right away so they can pat themselves on the shoulder telling everyone they were right and Ten Hag should've listened to them. He has played 2 games.

Pathetic.

He's been shite for years.

Most teams in the league seem to have started quite well while integrating new signings(Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle etc) or changing the style altogether(Spurs, Chelsea etc). Why do we get lame excuses like "getting back from preseason"? All the other coaches seem to get their ideas on the pitch fairly quickly.

No one is expecting perfection here, what everyone wants to see is just competence.

EtH is going to ditch his plan IMO. Eriksen is the obvious replacement for Mount and he doesn't have the legs to press like Mount.

Chelsea drew with Liverpool and lost to West Ham, Newcastle lost to City. You're mixing clubs who have the same coach for years with some who have it for 2 years and with a club who appointed a new one this year, really mish mash of everything. Its not about excuses its about people making big conclusions on just 2 games for the whole season as you're doing for Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle it seems. Spurs beat us and suddenly they sucessfuly changed their style altogether. That same Spurs who are apparently flying drew with Brentford the week before.
How did Chelsea changed their style exactly? What was their stlye last year?
That ETH will just ditch his plan is your opinion, based on not much, and you're entitled to it. You're acting like ETH didnt get any ideas on the pitch last season, doesnt know how to do it and changes his plans every few weeks. Grass is always greener at the neighbourds and stuff.

Chelsea and Liverpool both played equally well against each other. Chelsea again played very well against West Ham despite the loss. Chelsea had no style whatsover last year but now seem to play quick one touch passing football. They played quite well against Liverpool's pressing. They didn't resort to hoofball tactics to eke out a draw. Newcastle played quite well against City as well. We'd have been ripped to shreds if our season had started against Liverpool and City.

Brentford is a tough place to go to, Spurs while not exactly played well but they seemed to have transitioned from a counter attacking team to one that is comfortable in possession.

The point I'm trying to make is these teams seem to have started fairly well compared to the shambles that is us. Why can't we be competent like these teams?

After just one game?

Ange is doing a spectacular job then.

Why does a grown up person care about that?

I think you'll find it's mostly the grown up people that DO care about that.

Grown up people grew up with Best, Robson, Cantona, Beckham, Ronaldo etc. wearing the #7. Whether you want to believe it or not, it is/was an iconic number for Manchester United. Admittedly, though, it's lost it's shine lately, with players like Owen, Valencia, Di Maria and now this latest abortion donning the number; which is a shame.

Nobody wants to be right about that though, it's actually infuriating more than anyone else, that everyone except the decision makers could see he was potentially a very poor signing.

Grown men call giving a number on a football shirt to a certain player an 'abortion'?

:wenger:

Jesus Christ. I mean, might as well never play him then.

Eh? I think he's a shite footballer. The number on the back has not contributed to that at all. He was shite before he got here, and he's shite now. And, yes, he's an abortion of a footballer.

Except he wasnt but carry on.

A what?

Ah, yes, apologies. He was magnificent for Chelsea for the past few seasons - doubly so for the National team.

No. No he wasn't. He's been shit for the past few seasons, and he's continued in that vein for United. What we're seeing now, is what you can expect from him.

You should put yourself on slow mode mate.

I’d love to drop squad numbers all together and go back to the starting 11 having numbers 1 to 11, none of this 23 in goal, 2 at CB, 7 in midfield and 49 upfront!
We still wouldn't put our lineup announcements in a sensible order.

2 anonymous games, then a 6 week injury.
There have been more promising opening spells at a club.

If your worries in life revolve around footballers getting shirt numbers that you believe are reserved for legends, I don't really know what to tell you other than that's extremely embarrassing.

Except it's not embarrassing at all. Get off your high-horse. What's embarrassing is your misinformed and misguided outlook. How old are you? You see, there's this thing in this world called tradition. Maybe you've heard of it. Maybe you haven't. Maybe it's a cultural idiosyncrasy? I do not know.

Traditionally, Manchester United has assigned the #7 shirt to it's iconic players. It's superstars, if you will.

This has clearly gone out the window in recent years. And Mason Mount epitomises this.

It's been around 15 years since Michael Owen wore that shirt. Seriously? You're acting like a spoilt child.

Michael Owen won the Ballon d'or, you know?

Wasn't a huge fan of giving the shirt to him, but, he wasn't some nobody footballer.

And I'm not acting like a spoiled child at all. You just don't get it. Perhaps for the reasons I stated in my post prior.

Fans affination to the #7 at Manchester United isn't a new thing. It is, like I said, traditionally reserved for iconic players at our club. If you choose to disregard that, that's your prerogative.

He must've known the history behind the shirt, and the fact he would be judged accordingly. Or is he that out of touch? It was ALWAYS going to put pressure on him. And if he isn't performing, which he isn't, it will add fuel to the fire.

I know, but he is a Liverpool legend so the "value" and tradition the number had ceased to exist right there and then.

Besides, the times when we had world class attackers are gone. No player we have in our team should be wearing it, but it really is just a shirt number.

I got ridiculed in Mount's transfer thread for suggesting that Szoboszlai is a better buy, especially for half the wage outlay.
What a muppet I am.

Might want to wait till the end of the season to claim victory
