Martin Ødegaard

Them quotes are 6 months old and inaccurate. He was talking about several big-name managers who had personally shown him around their respective clubs, including Moyes at United. And there's nothing in the Norwegian press about any German lessons, though - like tons of kids - he might be taking it in school. After all, it's the language of love.
I think he was quoted saying that he was learning German in school, but switched to Spanish (or the other way around..).. Just the press making stuff up as usual

I have a guy on my twitter feed who will not stop hyping up this lad.

There's too much hype about this kid.
But it seems he loves the media attention.

Where do you get that from?

Of course he likes being rated as a footballer, I can't think of many footballers who are indifferent to the validation from others, but when he talks about the attention in the media he states that it's tiring being in such high demand in the press.

Strange claim.

As for today's game, looked damn good. Was our most incisive passer, danced past a few Estonian players with ease at times... still can't get over that he's only 15.

I was at the stadium for today's game. Easily the best attacking player on the pitch after he came on, and that's for a team that has players from the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and the Championship. After an hour of creating feck all against Estonia's organized defence he came in and quickly created four good scoring chances. Remarkable that he stands out that much against grown men at just 15.

He's a phenom and if he keeps developing he'll be in with a shout of the Ballon d'Or in a few years. Astoundingly good.

Such a joy to watch, even more so live. Videos doesn't even come close to give his perfectly weighted passes the justice they deserve. I really hate to admit it, but it's impossible not to think of players like Andrés Iniesta and, dare I say it, a certain Argentinian when watching this kid in full flow. I hate to make comparisons like this though (as it has happened with loads of promising youngsters before), and the poor state of the rest of the players on the pitch yesterday might make these comparisons a bit overkill, but he really do look something special. Regardless of nationality. Could have had atleast 3-4 assists during the 30-minute cameo yesterday, weren't it for his poor teammates. Here's hoping he won't choose Liverpool as his next destination.

So far this season he has adapted to every level straight away. From reserves to senior team (a pretty much certain starter now). From NT U18 to U21 and now he has established himself in the senior squad as perhaps the best player already after just three matches.

A colleague of mine could confirm that he infact visited Real Madrid the other day by the way. He's a golfing buddy with a Norwegian agent who represents Real Madrid, and he was shown pictures of Martin posing in a private jet with the likes of Cristiano and Gareth Bale. That's gotta be quite the experience for a 15-year old.

Thats a bit too much. He is playing against grown man at home, but in a league which would be an English or German 3rd tier.
And yes, he plays in the national team, with 15 and he is good there. But that doesnt mean that we got the new Messi here. He could be "just" a fast grown young man with a fine talent.
And 15 isnt 12. Guys of that age were seen as adult men in europe before 1900. I love a new talent and I wish him all the best.
BUT he is 15! Lets see what he does with 18.

SportBild said this week that he changed from Spanish to German in the summer.
He visited Dortmund,Stuttgart and...Bayern before that.
Who knows? ;)

When all the Falcao stuff was going on during deadline day, Sky kept mentioning that a deal for this guy could happen. Was anything more said about that? They said we'd most likely be looking at him in January but I've not seen anything else linking him to us since.

I think it was just rumours based on us giving him a trial, like several other clubs.

Yeah, because 15-year-olds who are consistently good for both club and country are just dime-a-dozen.

He's special, and it's not because he's more physically developed than his peers. His understanding of the game is unbelievable for a kid his age. It would be unusually good if he was 18 too.

German the language of love?

Don't like that he keeps saying Liverpool would be his dream move.

Surprised with all of those claims Liverpool haven't tried to pick him up tbh.

Empire of the Kop said:
Liverpool fans will become increasingly hopeful that their club will win the race to sign Norwegian prodigy Martin Odegaard, even though he’s claimed his love for the club will not affect his eventual transfer decision, reports the Daily Mail.

The 15-year-old, who’s already won two caps for his country due to his mesmerising form with Stromgodset this term, has come out and publicly stated his love for the Reds.

“Liverpool have always been my dream club,” Odegaard told German newspaper Sport Bild.

The likes of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Ajax, Manchester United and Barcelona have also been heavily linked to the teenage playmaker, and sadly for us, Odegaard reckons the fact he supports Liverpool will not come in to play when deciding his future.

“I will not let this affect my decision when I choose a new club.” he continued.

“It’s all about finding the team that is best for me and for my development. That is not necessarily Liverpool.

“I haven’t really thought about my future yet. I will end the season here and then visit a number of clubs. I have not made a final decision yet, though.

“Of course, it’s flattering when you hear that big clubs are after you, but I don’t think about it too often.”

While the maturity shown by Odegaard in these comments is very admirable, it would be difficult for most 15-year-olds to turn down their favourite club if we were to come knocking!

We can only hope this proves to be the case as the race for one of the hottest properties in world football hots up.

Even if Liverpool is his favorite club, there's no way he will be signing for us. Pretty sure of that.

Sterling's ascension won't have hurt your chances, think he's got Madrid written all over him, myself.

You would have to sign him right away. The dream fades after you've been a professional for a few years (if the years weren't miserable). The sentimentality makes way for the professionalism and their own career.

All the talk about him needing to pick a club where he'll get first team football is crazy. He's 15 for god's sake, there's more to suggest that first team football at that age does more harm than good.

Let him pick a club with a good academy, be that somewhere like Ajax or Stuttgart, or United or Arsenal, or even somewhere like Southampton, where he'd see their record at bringing players through.

He may well be a superstar, but let him develop into one rather than have it thrown at him at 15 fecking years old.

Standing out in that Noggie team isn´t well to put it mildly, hard....

Im starting to feel sorry for him.
Unless he rewrites the history books and is seen as being a class above pele / maradonna / messi he is going to be seen as a failure by some.

He should go to us. Its bullshit that the likes of Ajax are better than us with youth players. Players from our academy are given the chance for us. When they have not succeed with us, they've got good careers in other clubs. Some even at big clubs.

I think LvG would be perfect for him.

Not really, we have an excellent tradition of bringing through young players, but the Ajax Academy is arguably the best in the world. He's also going to get more 1st team opportunities with Ajax, and have less pressure on him.

"Tradition" is right...and the problem - what have we produced in the last 20 years?

Last 20 years? Januzaj, Pogba, Pique, Welbeck? We've massively improved/developed young players like DeGea and Ronaldo. We've also brought though players like Evans, Fletcher and Cleverley - and this season have given young players like Blackett and McNair games.

I agree we've not brought through a Giggs, Scholes, Beckham for a while - but who has? Who was the last great young player Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or City brought through? With the increased pressure to succeed and increased cost of failure big clubs are buying more and more players and developing youth players less and less. That's part of why Ødegaard would be better off going to a club like Ajax to develop for a few years.

Its not great in 20 years is it (not sure we can claim Pique btw) but, yeah, not saying that the other big English clubs are any better - Southampton probably the most successful Premier League club recently with Bale, Ox, Walcott, Shaw, Lallana, Chambers, etc

TBF our recent record with highly regarded foreign youth players is quite good when compared to other clubs. At his age, we signed Pogba from St. Etienne and Januzaj from Anderlecht; and they've both developed really well in the reserves level. It can be argued that Pogba should've gotten more of a chance but he has blossomed into one of the best young players around regardless and a lot of it due in part to the training imparted in our youth teams. Adnan has gotten plenty of game-time, far more than he would have some other top clubs and is an integral part of the first team. Pereira is another one already knocking on the door.

Now, Ødegaard might make more consistent appearances at Ajax who no doubt have an excellent setup, but they aren't foolproof either and it could go awry. Lots of talented players join their academy and fizzle out, or never progress to the envisaged level, or no big club comes along to buy them at a later date and they stagnate in the Eredivisie. I'd back a renowned proponent of young players in Van Gaal to bring Ødegaard along nicely if he chooses to join United. Another factor to be borne in mind is that all 3 of our primary attackers as of now - Rooney (29), RVP (31), Falcao (almost 29) are advancing in age so opportunities wouldn't be hard to come by by the time dude's 17 or 18 year old. He could even be the eventual successor to Rooney in the #10 role, considering Rooney will be 31 when he Ødegaard turns 18.

Pogba came from Le Havre IIRC.

I agree. BUT in the competition for the Ballon D´Dor in a few years? With 18 or what? And again; he playes in a 3rd tier league. Impressive but nothing to go crazy about.
And why shouldnt Norway bring him in? Can only help their football press wise etc. He isnt ready for that. Add to that that the team isnt that good and the fact that he is an attacking player who always stand out more and you see
the bigger picture.
You are going to far atm. Nothing against you. Happens to all of us, the hpye train.
But see the facts in this case.
He is a talent many speak highly about but he is also 15! and has to show much more against really good players to prove some comments here.
Remember your Adnan last year. A few good games and he was the next Zidane and better then Ronaldo with 18.
And now?
Give Martin time. IF he becomes a great I will be as happy as every football fan. IF.

Not really a good case. Pogba left because he couldn't get a game and could be a starter at a club like juve. Pique because he couldn't get a game either and could be starter for barca. Players like Evans and Cleverley haven't fulfilled their potential and Welbeck eventually packed up and left because you kept signing big names to keep him from establishing himself.

Really like what I have seen from him so far and he is potentially top class, I think we need to be splashing some money on the top young talent all round the Europe both in terms of adding players to the academy and plYers whoa are closer to first team level.

Chelsea's academy is packed with talent, they have lots of talent out on loan, have sold some for huge profit and even let one or two into their first team. I think we need to copy what they have done but improve on it by giving more first team opportunities to the players we sign.

I think he could just go to a decent sized club with a manager who believes in not wearing out youngsters and has other options, and just be the 4th or 5th attacking mid/winger in a team that starts the usual 2 or 3. Get 20-30 first team games a year.

Or, go to a club that aren't in Europe but play good football. If he went to Swansea and rotated with Montero, Routledge and Dyer on the wings and backed up Sigurdsson, he wouldn't get overused.
