Mario Gomez

I read an article somewhere (this it was from Soccernet) that a number of German writers are suggesting that Bayern actually play better without Robben

That's interesting. I can't comment too much as I don't watch German football too often, but that is pretty surprising for me.

I wonder then if Bayern would be willing to part with Robben? If they are interested in that lad at Borussia Moechengladbach (sp?) and with Ribery, Kroos and Muller playing as their three behind Gomez, would there be a chance of Robben being let go?

I have a feeling they will replace Robben with either Reus or Gotze soon.

Almost had a 4th with that shot from the halfway line at the end. He wasnt that good in his first season after his move to Bayern, but since then he's hit the heights he had before then
Only because Van Gaal didn't really want him. Insane considering Gomez' scoring record and the transfer fee (£30m) he carried at the time, but Van Gaal was a bit of an idiot in his time at Bayern anyway. Gomez settled in well before getting left out time and time again in 2009/10.
He now has 57 goals in 63 games since the start of last season. Amazing.

Doubt it. Robben is still an ace player and one useful in Europe. Also great teams have great players in numbers - if he's happy being on the bench some games, you don't want to toss away your best players. Bayern don't need the money.

The only way they do it, is to bring in a German player to replace him.

I wonder how Podolski is doing these days as Robben replaced him.

Thing about Robben is he probably won't be happy on the bench even just now and then, so there's a chance he'll be replaced by Reus in the summer.

Podolski's doing well at Köln as he's back at his natural level. He was never a player of Bayern's calibre and never will be.

Can't agree with that. He has proven time and time again he's good enough for the very top level (and Bayern are top level), it's just that he was never fully trusted at Munich. You only have to look at his appearance count and the minutes he was on the pitch (less than 1500 in 08/09, less than 1000 (!) in 07/08 and just over 1100 in 06/07) to see this was blatanlty obvious. He was banging them in for Germany for fun and playing really well either upfront or on the left during the same period, nothing to do with ability.
He'll move to a bigger club soon enough again though, he has been excellent so far this season and was very good in 10/11 as well... and he's only 26 years of age despite being on the scene since forever.

I'm aware that he's scored a ridiculous amount of goals this season, so the logic dictates that he's bound to be a pretty good striker. I've seen Gomez play something like twenty times, or thereabouts, and every time, without fail, he's looked like an absolute donkey. I just don't see it with him, I really don't.

I don't rate him at all based on what I've seen. If I was the manager of Sunderland and was offered Gomez for ten million, with absolutely no prior knowledge about him except the games I've seen him play, I'd laugh at them Derek Llambias style.

What am I missing here? does he just never show up outside the Bundesliga?

He does seem to underwhelm whenever I watch him as well. Odd player.

loses his composure in the build up quite a bit, then ends up trying too hard and looking a fool.

With Ribery and Robben having their own pissing contest he was virtually ignored and then cocked up the few touches he got.

Class penalty though.

Yeah seems like he specialises in the bundasliga really. I mean he was twice German footballer of the year before he even signed for Bayern. And yet tonight, like at international level at tournaments, he let himself down with some poor efforts.

Scholesy's favourite, Olic also had a mare. Had a great chance to win it at the end and then a poor penalty. Not bad for about 30 minutes of football.

He misses a feckload of chances but still scores consistently in all competitions (12 in the CL this season?) so you have to give it to him for getting into those positions more often than anyone else in world football. Must be frustrating as hell to watch as a supporter though. I think there's doubts about him in big games so you could be right in that sense.

Think it was the right decision to lay it off, just poor anticipation from Buyten but then he isnt a striker so cant blame him. Make the simple run and there's a tap in to be had.

can't believe how poor he was tonight. Forgot he was playing after a while, apart from when he skied the odd good chance.

My impression also; did Bayern have nobody else on the bench for him? Bad in the first half and nowhere to be seen in the second half.

Will score a hat-trick against England in the Euros though.

Same. I struggle to compute the stats. Everything I read about him makes me think he should be in the same league as the likes of Van Nistlerooy and Henry but he so clearly isn't.

Statistics  When players like Gomez scores 13 goals in one season of champions league, you know something is wrong with football.

Always frustrates the hell out of me watching him play. Can you imagine how many goals he would have if he actually put all his chances away?

This is way over the top. In one game, he has gone from 'he has 13 goals - the statistics speak for themselves' to 'he has 13 goals - football is mad'

Believe the statistics in the CL...

Messi had 36 attempts on the target, 31 off the target in 990 minutes
Messi scored 14 goals - but 4 were penalties

Ronaldo had 30 attempts on the target, 25 off the target in 930 minutes
Ronaldo scored 10 goals - but 2 were penalties

Gomez had 29 attempts on the target, 15 off the target in 1003 minutes
Gomez scored 12 goals - none was a penalty

Yes, he often looks like a donkey. And he depends on others to provide him chances. But he does not need as much chances as others - and he somehow comes in the positions, too. But he has off matches - yesterday was one of it.

Finally people see beyond the stats when it comes to Gomez. I'll give you the top and bottom of it: Defending in the Bundesliga is shit. Gomez scores some decent finishes but a lot of tap ins and some very lucky goals that keepers feck up. He's nothing special at all.

watch the game of bayern v basel and see the finishes he has.

He clearly has it in his locker, but i think he perhaps just over tried, the 1 where he turned cahill and smashes it over the bar just reeks of low composure in the big games.

You dont score 40 in the league and be a bad player - reminds me a bit of ibrahimovich when he was younger

he reminds me of Andy Cole - will score a bucketful of goals in a decent side but will miss his fair share of chances

he lacks the clinical finishing that made Ruud truly world class

For me, I have the same opinion of him as I have Ibrahimovic. A lot of hype for feck all!! He has a poor first touch and lacks composure in the box, it did not help that his wingers were trying to see who had the biggest dick in the game so he had little service, but he still should have done better with what he had. Nice pen though.

He was always shit, but when he is scoring people forget that.

I haven't rated him so far and this gives me a further reason not to rate him. He's alright. Better than Huntelaar though. I'll give him that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks he isn't that good. He misses so many chances, and he always has done. Look at the two games against Madrid. It took him 4 or 5 chances in the first leg to score, and when he did it was bundled over the line. The second leg was the same, but he didn't manage to score. In the German Cup he missed a very good chance to get Bayern back into it and missed that as well. I don't watch a lot of Bayern games but when I do, it just seems like he misses a heap of chances.
