Marcus Rashford (out) | signs for Villa on loan

We aren’t cutting and running though - that would be if Villa had an obligation to buy. An option for Villa means that we lose all control - he has a Lingard like loan and we don’t get the benefit of other clubs being interested. He is awful and Villa don’t exercise it anyway.
Lingard didn’t have even an option if I recall. We know he was never turning it around here, so we either take the 40m and run, or he comes back and we take a bit less to get him gone. I’m fine with either, what I don’t want to see is ‘well he scored 5 goals, there’s a player in there somewhere.’

If he smashes it then Villa take up the option, but he also attracts the likes of Milan and Barcelona again who throw their own bids in and Marcus gets the deciding vote.

Good luck to him, kinda sad it ended like this. But it is mostly(if not wholy) on him that it ended like this. Seemingly didn't want to put the work in for what managers(specially Amorim) wanted and expected from him. Stupid off the field stuff(partying, coming late to training and his driving incidents). Really seems like he doesn't care about football or MU at least anymore, from the outside looking in, off course we won't know 100%, but that's what I perceive from everything going on around him.

Also don't care if he will do well or not for Villa or any other team, because he weren't playing well for us for about 2 years now. Only hope the media don't go overboard as soon as he scores a goal(very much doubt they won't, will probably be 1000 articles about how MU was the problem).

75% of wages and 40 mil buy option is not a bad deal for Utd. It is a gamble for Villa but is a loan primarly.

It’s going to be weird seeing him in a Villa shirt for the first time. Best of luck Marcus, it shouldn’t be ending like this because you should be retiring at the club whom you grew up supporting it

Just feel really sad at how it's turned out with him this season. He should have achieved so much more at our club. I hope he can rediscover his form and his passion for the game at Villa -- and hopefully returns to United as a revitalised footballer.
I’m tempted to say what I really feel. Best say nothing

I think it's a pretty good deal, especially with the wage contributions rising dependent on conditions.

Obviously in our best interest if he performs well. I'm sceptical of that happening, but it could be a pretty good deal if he does.

I don't think we need a salary cap. We need to stop making stupid decisions at boardroom level. There are a lot of instances of players being offered wages they failed to justify at United. Somebody in negotiations needs to be willing to say 'No, sorry but we don't think that amount is justified. If that's your position it' ll be neccesary for you to leave if you choose not to take the offer'. Bayern do it all the time.
Yes I agree in an ideal world. But i am proposing a salary cap in football in general not just at United, because if we don’t pay a certain figure, then another club will.

Football needs to impose performance related bonuses.

Maybe it’s our in the sky though

If he has a good rest of season, there will be no shortage of suitors for that quoted price.

Now get rid of Case, Mount, and Shaw.

Really?

I thought that's the kind of thing often said about people - you can get away with X when you're delivering results and it's not seen as effecting your performance or professional commitment; but as soon as those performances regularly dip, it becomes an issue and you can't get away with it.

I thought that was said by professionals when Rashford has been out on the drink after United defeats - it's not great either way, but you can get away with it more if you've just had a great game and your team won; if you're playing badly and you've just lost, then it's a really terrible look.

Same kind of thing seems to be applied to other forms of flash lifestyle while performing poorly on the pitch - especially when seemingly giving little effort, and having your professionalism questioned by your managers. It all starts to add up to a seeming poor sense of priorities and lack of professional commitment.
Drinking after matches is a professionalism issue though, whereas wearing ostentatious clothing is more veering between irrelevancy and general bellendry.
I actually find the argument that people are more accepting of loud clothing if the player is on form somewhat disingenuous anyway- people love to sneer whatever.

Anyway, I don't want to derail the thread.

Rashford definitely has an issue with application but there's a part of me that thinks his body isn't up to it anymore.

Yes he's only 27 but he started so young he's almost played the same number of matches most players play in their entire careers. Somewhat reminiscent of Rooney who peaked in his early 20s and was looking pretty washed by 28.
but the attitude between them is so different, although Rooney was degradded but he was still giving his 100% in the pitch..
Wish Rashford all the best..
Next Shaw please.

Benefits no one. This is good business and allows us to improve the side, which I hope we do this window.
I would rather have let him go for 20m or less. Because I can’t imagine Aston Villa paying us 40m. So we actually pay him to play for other club. I hope I’m wrong. The only upside is that this is one less problem to deal with for couple of months so we can concentrate on football and not talk about it every week.

75% of wages - wow, that's good business considering no one else was in for him.

I thought we'd end up paying at least half his wages in some desperate deadline day, gun to head, deal, at best.

Between Antony and this that must be the guts of £500k a week saved in wages.

Why Rooney?

I hope he does well just so we get that £40m and I’m somewhat braced for him scoring on his debut, followed by the goading from everyone outside of the fanbase.

Not sure how it’s going to pan out but my theory is because none of the really top clubs wanted him, he’s going to have the mentality that he’s doing Villa a favour when in reality it’s vice versa, and that might come through further down the line after the honeymoon period fizzles out and the on-field strops and lack of effort start to appear.

Villa have had a fairly recent and ongoing cautionary tale similar to this in Coutinho where he was a coup loan signing, put up some good numbers, got a permanent deal and then put his feet up. He is currently on his second loan spell back in Brazil after spending last season in Qatar.

Or maybe it means he’s not getting along with his current manager and feels like he’s being forced out.
There are times when it’s right for a player to move on for the good of his career and the good of the club he plays for.
Pretty sure it’s not all as black and white of the club/ manager are saying.
He was bad a long time before Amorim joined the club, you can't use that as an excuse for Rashford.

Everyone here should be rooting for him to kill it at Villa. Because if he doesn’t, there’s no shot we get 40 mil for him in the summer and we have to deal with this headache all over against. Hopefully this is the end of it and really, it’s a shame it’s ending this way. He had all the ability to be a legend at United, but lack of iq on and off the field sunk him. He bought into his own hype.

This is a weird one to analyze.

If you look at Rashford overall stats.for United, they're actually pretty decent: about one goal every three games, a little less than half as much assists for a total production of 0.47 goals per match. Not bad considering he also started more than 1/4 of those games from the bench.

The problem here has been the distribution: apart from his great debut on Van Gaal's last season, in the remaining nine seasons he only produced great numbers in about three (the first two in Ole's tenure and the first one in Ten Hag's). The rest were pretty underwhelming. The overall sum wouldn't be bad for a player who is a squad option with more important and productive strikers ahead of him, but it's definitely not enough for a player that's supposed to be the emblem, poster boy and main star for United. He was expected to be a Cole, Van Nistelrooy or Van Persie but he turned out to be a Solksjaer.

His last seasons being pretty crap, which just coincides with the moment he signed a really generous, superstar kind of contract renovation, just makes the ending bitter. It's really in the best interests of both United and Rashford to go separate ways. Rashford can try and kickstart his career in a new environment and United can go get the striker they really want/need right now.

Glad this is sorted for now. Hopefully he does enough to convince Villa to trigger the buy option, but I'm not holding my breath.

Either way, we really could do with some additional fire power for the rest of the season. Still fail to see where enough goals come from to be competitive in Europe/FA Cup and get into the top half of the league.

That would be insanely bad business for us when selling a 27 year old with 140 career goals to his name. For context - Newcastle signed Vlachodimos, a 30 year old backup GK from Forest for 20m. I know he's on lower wages than Rashford but we've got to stay firm and demand a transfer fee that somewhat reflects his ability/age. Chelsea did something similar with Lukaku - sent him on loan and held out for a decent transfer fee.

I wouldn't pay much attention to that deal (coupled with Anderson going the other way) given the PSR issue they had at the time.

Ability without application is absolutely worthless.

This just feels so strange. Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa just sounds... wrong. Oh well, they have a good manager and a squad that won't have to rely on him as the only output - so he will probably do quite well.

Real shame it’s ending this way. Seeing Dorgu, a danish kid who had played for Lecce for a hot minute and has no connection to the city get a send off from their fans while Rashford, a local boy who’s been at the club for a long time and played 400+ games and scored 130+ goals, leave under a dark cloud and in acrimony like this…it’s just not right.

Hope he reignites his career and gets a permanent transfer in the summer. It’s the best for everyone.
