We have a left footed CB who can cover LB and has played in the world cup?

Which Winger/Player gave him problems in the world cup?

Im not even a big fan of this guy, but people's opinions are so bad of him.

Don't really remember him coming up against a winger if I'm being honest. He just didn't fill me with confidence. It's not based on much

Didn't really pay much attention to him at the WC, but according to Castarol Index, he was in the team of the tournament.

The signing would certainly make sense anyway, as he can play centre back, left wing back and left back, if/when we revert back to four at the back. Don't think he'd be too pricey neither.

My only memory of him from the WC is that he is a bit of a dirty player, but an athletic future talent.

What would the English equivelant newspapers be for the two?

"A Bola" would probably be "The Sun" or "Daily Mail". "O Jogo" would be a reliable one. Don´t know which ones are in England

Really? How come one was being whored around and the other wasn't?

I believe it´s a matter of agents. Mangala´s agent is Jorge Mendes. I don´t even know who is Rojo´s agent. Rojo had a much better season than Mangala. Even Porto fans would acknowledge that.

What the feck do you mean? You people have turned your nose up at Blind, Vermaelen and now Rojo. He's a youngish CB who had a good year for a European side and played well in the World Cup.
It's Hummels or nothing for the muppets. If Rojo could be loaned to Dortmund for 5 minutes he'd suddenly be desirable.

Mangala was already super hyped up. For some reason he didnt lose that hype despite looking dodgy

Perhaps the more interesting part is Garay who looked a lot better than Mangala, was integral to Benfica's success in europe last season and left for cheap this summer. We didnt go back for him, a left footed CB
Garay is right-footed and more of a rock than a ball-playing CB, but I'm disappointed too, especially for the small fee.

Some mixed views on this lad. I thought he looked good at the World Cup...

He isn't that good, had a solid World Cup to be fair to him but still, we can do better.

Southampton is about his level.

He was solid defensively but didn't look that great to me. Almost seemed sort of Phil Jones playing RB. .

Thought he was average for Argentina at leftback at the world cup. .

I don't even rate Blind as a top class player but I would have him over Rojo. Rojo looked a bit erratic at times.

He was a joke at Spartak Moscow for what I know..

Seems like he's going to Southampton anyway and probably a good job too.

strikes me as a 100% nut-job. And I doubt he will ever improve mentally, because most of them nutters don't. Based on that, I doubt he can be considered a 'Louis van Gaal player' and it would be a pretty big risk. Would surprise me if we signed him.

He's a liability in my opinion.

Euch. Don't think much of Rojo.

17m € already seems a bit over the top for him. I wouldn't pursue with signing him. If we even are in for him.

Was not impressed with this guy at all during the world cup. Thought he was poor.

He's 6'4 according to wiki. It would be absolutely criminal for us to lose the ball in the air with Rojo and Smalling, two 6'4 players at CB. Jones has a big leap and Evans is fairly good in the air as well. Shaw is also tall and good in the air if he's back

That can't be true, he's only about 6'2.

Surely Rojo would replace Smalling though? Jones Evans Rojo?

No, most people don't see him as much of a talent anymore, since he's already 24. It's just that some people think he's still younger.
Think you're wrong there, anyone who's paid any real attention knows he's got a lot of quality attributes and that he could become an excellent centre-half.

I didn't say the opposite, I rate Smalling very high, but people over 23 are generally not described as talents anymore, that's the point.

I just saw that & I honestly thought he was about 5'10 watching the world cup. I'm not saying the wiki entry is wrong i'm just surprised. I hate judging players based on height but it does make me look at him in a completely different light.

He's 6'2 ish not 6'4.

Rojo the left CB, Smalling in the middle and between Evans and Jones for the right spot I'd say.

Evans would play the middle if he doesn't have to play Left, i think.

Jones/Smalling have experience of playing RB as well.

The german, spanish and português Wiki say about 6'2.

He wouldn't be an overwhelming signing but I'd reserve judgement if he did come.

The thing is, we have to buy a CB. It's not an option to wait until January or next summer to see who's available then, because we just can't go into the season with three somewhat injury-prone starters and just two kids from the academy as back-up. Rojo might not be the one we desired but we've painted ourselves into a corner by playing the waiting game, 'assessing the squad'. Who else is there by now that we can realistically get.

Although Jones & Smalling played at RB I think Evans is a lot better with the ball at his feet and his distribution, hence my conclusion.

Well to be fair a World Cup Final playing CB isn't exactly a random lad is he.

Shaw - Rojo - Evans - Smalling - RWB

Rojo would play on the left of the 3, why would he replace Smalling?

I think if LVG gets a left footer to play LCB, he'll play Evans as the central CB and it'll be between Jones and Smalling for the RCB slot.

Yeah, and you'd want the best distributor in the center. Plus Evans is the slowest of this set and you don't want him pulled out wide as much as the others.

He'll just have to get little more aggressive and attack the ball more to play central. Otherwise that's the ideal role for him in this formation.

Which is utterly ridiculous, given that we signed Vidic at 24 and most people hadn't heard of him. Thiago Silva, Carvalho, Benatia, Koscielny didn't make a name for themselves until their mid 20s either. Most centre halves don't set the world alight until much later.

Smalling would be fine if he got a settled injury-free run at CB. He's still only 24.

I'd expect so as well. The central one has to be more comfortable on the ball, so it should be Evans. Whether or not he stays fit or plays well enough is a different matter but if he plays as well as he should do it will be him in the middle.

The times, guardian and telegraph. Cheers, Ive known the names for awhile but never known what type of readership they went for.

Lovren would be more suited to playing center of the 3 from what i've seen of him so far. Isn't the quickest and doesn't particularly like being pulled out wide which is what we need in a LCB.
He would, though I'm not sure we should be limiting ourselves only to left footers. Evans has a great left foot and would be our best bet on that side IMO.

Smalling is 25 in 3 months, doesn't mean he can't develop anymore, that would be bullshit. But I wouldn't regard him as a 'future talent' anymore and I think most people wouldn't. A player of this age is expected to be a grown and known player, not a talent anymore.
