Was not impressed with this guy at all during the world cup. Thought he was poor.
Thought he was really good, personally. Also worth noting that he's more of a CB than a full back (at club level, anyway) so was basically playing out of his preferred position the entire time. Argentina conceded feck all goals throughout and he was a big part of that.

This would be a very good signing, nice to see us making bids!

I thought it was in spite of him to be honest - with Mascherano continually bailing them out.

Yeah I'm not a fan, he's too rash and I wasn't overly pleased at the WC. But it seems clear to me it's either him or Blind to play the role of LCB/LWB. I'd go for Blind too, a more intelligent footballer who already understands the 'philosophy' and can also play in DM. Similar prices too, apparently.

You're entitled to your opinion but that seems crazy to me. Maybe views are clouded by some of the last ditch tackles Masherano made?

Garay in particular was absolutely superb throughout.

Really? I thought all the players in Argentina's defense had a decent world cup. Even the often mocked Demichelis.

I thought he was a bit if a specialist LWB? Where would this leave Shaw? Looked good in the World Cup, going forward anyway.
Plays CB for club.

RE: Philosophy.

Yet Van Gaal, the guy that has trained doesnt agree with your thinking?

He seems a left Footed Jones to me.

Fits the bill though to play left sided in a 3.

Not doubting Garay - he was very good. Just thought Rojo looked a complete liability. Sporting fans I speak to also tell me he is nowhere near Utd level.

The exact type of purchase we need to get used to LVG making. Not the biggest or most obvious name, but young and malleable, possessing a specific skillset necessary to fit into our overall system.

Argentina's defence improved when Fernandez was replaced by Demichelis. Overall they looked like a good unit and Rojo was a part of that.

Is this back again :nervous:

€20m is a lot for a player that I don't think is any better than what we have. Maybe on the last day of the transfer window if we couldn't get anyone else but for now we should try get someone good.

So it seems more a matter of the structure of the deal.

If it's true then we'll get him.

Don't know if it is though. Portuguese press have used our name and Bullshitted a lot. Garay, Gaitan, Carvalho we've bid for all them before according to these papers and even signed a few.

@Sly do you think this is true ?

I don't think I know any Sporting fans so I'll have to take your word on that one.

Sly seems to rate him though, and from what I've seen, he looks good.

Anyway, this 'Utd level' stuff is all a bit grating, you'd swear we were Real with the way people go on.

So we've gone from targeting Hummels>Varmaelan>Blind to Rojos!

Im sorry I do not agree with this - we shop in a different market compared to Sporting so its natural they will have some players that are not of the calibre capable of playing for Utd.

I don't get you here? Players progress from clubs like Sporting to clubs like ours. That's basically how it works. Many top players have been purchased from Sporting, Benfica, and Porto in recent years.

So, you compare this to the from the beginning unattainable Hummels, the totally injury-prone Vermaelen and a player who doesn't even play at CB?
If any, I would be pissed we didn't snap up Garay, but then again he isn't a left-footed CB and if Van Gaal wants Rojo and rates him high enough I don't have a problem in signing him.

I don't follow what you're saying. There's more than enough to suggest we could be bidding for Blind - the comments he has made, the coach, and others connected with the club prove this.

Would be a bit of a meh signing. Typical of us.
No what would be typical of us is to watch him go to Spurs or Roma, play really well and then try (unsuccessfully) get him for £30m next season, while simultaneously beating ourselves up for never spotting these talents when they're affordable.

Of course they do - but they also have plenty who don't. Im simply saying I believe Rojo falls into the latter bracket. Its only my opinion based on what I've seen and taken on board what a few sporting fans have said to me regarding him.

We have a left footed CB who can cover LB and has played in the world cup?

I thought he looked like a bit of a clown at the WC. Bit headless chickenish, bit David Luizish, bit short on defensive nous etc.

Which Winger/Player gave him problems in the world cup?

Im not even a big fan of this guy, but people's opinions are so bad of him.

He didn't impress me at the WC but i guess we have to trust LVG on this (if true).

Strange that he seems to polarise opinions on here. I was rather impressed with him in the WC and thought they missed him when he missed one of the games.

Imagine Rojo, Jones and Rafael in the same defence line... will be madness

Having said that, I think Rojo would be a very good signing under LVG

You must have talked to Sporting fans about two years ago. He was good last year. No doubt about that. You just have to read our forum to understand that. And he was good enough in the World cup to get big praise from Simeone and Maradona. Good enough for me.

Its called the internet mate - people talk on there. Kind of like what we are doing right now

So apart from the one post on this thread from a Sporting fan saying he would be good enough, I'd like to see a link to where your friends said he wasn't.

If that's ok? I mean people talk on the internet, shoudn't be hard to link.

When "O Jogo" starts reporting it then i believe there are negotiations in progress. Most of those Garay and Gaitan rumours came from "A Bola". I think we will do a deal sooner or later. Two or three millions more will be enough for closure.

What the feck do you mean? You people have turned your nose up at Blind, Vermaelen and now Rojo. He's a youngish CB who had a good year for a European side and played well in the World Cup.

Do you even know what my views are on Blind, Vermaelen or this guy? I'm sorry for not getting my knickers in a twist while we beat Southampton to a left back, the last time that happened we ended up with Buttner (Rojo is obviously better than Buttner, having just played in the world cup final). He could turn out to be a good player, he may not (I have only seen him at the world cup and he was okay), but that doesn't change the fact his signing doesn't exactly set the pulses racing. Like many of our signings. So, I don't understand the tone of your post. I said this was a bit of a meh signing, and that is exactly what it will be. Whether it will turn out to be successful or not, only time will tell.

Panic buy? Or the best we could get?
The next versatile left footed centre back on the list after Vermaelen I'd imagine. Not sure why the tabloid-ish labels like "panic buy" are necessary, especially with three weeks to go in the window.
