Marcos Rojo | Manchester United Player Pending Medical

OK here's the thing...

We needed a defender to play in a back three. Now it seems we've signed one.

But everything about this seems average.

He's hardly a world class defender, never set his old club alight with amazing games. He's had a decent world cup but then again so did half of the Algeria national team.

It's like we've gone "Right, who's available... £16m? Good price. We'll have him."

We've paid average money for an average player, when now more than ever we need quality and in order to get that we need to spend big money.

He may turn out to be great. But he has an equal chance of being absolute crap at the level we need him to be at.

We simply don't have time to get the signings wrong right now. This one reeks of desperation.
Vermaelen is also average and is a crock, I'm glad we have someone who can improve at a higher level and has no injury record to speak of.

Of course. I´ve always said that. I´m counting on Van Gaal to make him evolve to that point. With Van Gaal´s track record with players in terms of influence and improvement, why not? Like i said you just need to watch him play to see the positives of his caractheristics and why he could be suited for the premier league. If he´s physically strong, good pace and decent on the ball why won´t a World Class manager be able to improve him? His negative points such as concentration lapses and positional errors can be diminished by Van Gaal´s work. His disciplinary problems is the same. Mind you in the last year there was some improvement in that aspect. He can´t do the same at England. Refs aren´t as lenient and i´m sure Van Gaal will be as strict as Leonardo Jardim or even more. His good world cup came after a very good campaign for Sporting. Why wouldn´t he keep evolving?
This is great to hear indeed. In England a strong defender (which I knew he was as I saw him in the we) who is a brute in the air is a huge asset. That combined with everything else you state, makes for an existing signing. And pretty reasonable as well.

Stop moaning, few quality player wants to join us in this state, especially while we're out of the CL.

I'm backing Mark Red!

I don't care that everyone on here is already shitting on him, I think he'll be a fan favourite!

(It must be noted my judgement of players is mixed)

Wasn't aware that Algeria made it to the WC final.

In how many matches have you seen him in Sporting ?

No concerns about him going on strike to get his own way? LVG does not seem the type to stand for that kind of thing.

Nah, not really considering his ownership situation there was probably pressure on him from both sides.

Anyway, i doubt he replicates that stuff at United. In the odd chance he does some years into his deal he would have been worth it anyway probably.

Watch a lot of the Portuguese league?

As long as he isn't the only new arrival this next two weeks I'll be happy. Him alone won't solve sod all though.

I see so many Liverpool fans rate their defenders as some of the best around yet none have a good reason for why they conceded so many goals last season.

Playing Gerrard as their sole defensive cover and hoping for the best might have something to do with it. But try telling that to them. He can do no wrong in their eyes.

So we wanted to get rid of some dead wood this season and were going to sign some more deadwood, wonderful
Rojo is deadwood already?

Are you for fecking real?

Jesus, this forum.

We've bought Rojo over other options basically because he is a left footer comfortable on the ball and that's what LVG wants for his system.

I think we'll go after another defender maybe.

Yeah, it turns into an endless loop. Well, if it's not the defenders fault, is it the keeper? No, Mignolet is wonderful. Is it the midfield? No, best in the league. Is it the manager/tactics? No, Brendan is a genius.

On Rojo...I can't imagine he's anything more than our 3rd choice transfer but so be it. He helps and his versatility is great to have.

But it *seems* like a deal Woody is only getting completed because of external negotiating help (ie Doyen). And of course, there was drama as usual.

Are you saying he's above average and we don't need quality?

I'm going to answer your question with another since you've not focused on the main point of my comment which is that we need quality, proven quality at that.

There aren't many Proven Quality CB's around tbf. And proven quality ones who are left footers and comfortable on the ball even less so.

People moan that we didn't sign Benatia when his thread was started at Udinense etc.. then moan when we make that type of unglamorous bit of a gamble signing as well.

Eh? You're the one claiming he's average, not me. Hence I'm asking you how mud you've seem to from this opinion ?

I have no opinion if him because I've barely seen him and don't judge a player when I've not seen them properly.

I reckon you're actually answering my question with an another question because you want to avoid the question and have actually barely seen rojo.

Which proven quality defenders are available right now?
There is no "available right now" if the price is right mate.

The same way that Real, Barcelona, PSG, Chelsea, City get their defenders when they need one, regardless of price and if they're "available".
