BBC text mentioned Mexes this morning (not sure which rag originated it), but he's 32. Surely that ship has sailed?

Skrtel, Agger, Sakho and Lovren.
Vermaelen is also average and is a crock, I'm glad we have someone who can improve at a higher level and has no injury record to speak of.OK here's the thing...
We needed a defender to play in a back three. Now it seems we've signed one.
But everything about this seems average.
He's hardly a world class defender, never set his old club alight with amazing games. He's had a decent world cup but then again so did half of the Algeria national team.
It's like we've gone "Right, who's available... £16m? Good price. We'll have him."
We've paid average money for an average player, when now more than ever we need quality and in order to get that we need to spend big money.
He may turn out to be great. But he has an equal chance of being absolute crap at the level we need him to be at.
We simply don't have time to get the signings wrong right now. This one reeks of desperation.

This is great to hear indeed. In England a strong defender (which I knew he was as I saw him in the we) who is a brute in the air is a huge asset. That combined with everything else you state, makes for an existing signing. And pretty reasonable as well.Of course. I´ve always said that. I´m counting on Van Gaal to make him evolve to that point. With Van Gaal´s track record with players in terms of influence and improvement, why not? Like i said you just need to watch him play to see the positives of his caractheristics and why he could be suited for the premier league. If he´s physically strong, good pace and decent on the ball why won´t a World Class manager be able to improve him? His negative points such as concentration lapses and positional errors can be diminished by Van Gaal´s work. His disciplinary problems is the same. Mind you in the last year there was some improvement in that aspect. He can´t do the same at England. Refs aren´t as lenient and i´m sure Van Gaal will be as strict as Leonardo Jardim or even more. His good world cup came after a very good campaign for Sporting. Why wouldn´t he keep evolving?

He did say top coach, not imbecile.

No concerns about him going on strike to get his own way? LVG does not seem the type to stand for that kind of thing.
Watch a lot of the Portuguese league?OK here's the thing...

That doesn't even make any sense. So we wanted to get rid of some dead wood this season and were going to sign some more deadwood, wonderful
I thought it had sunk.
He will only make up the numbers in the squad if he's signed. That doesn't even make any sense.
I see so many Liverpool fans rate their defenders as some of the best around yet none have a good reason for why they conceded so many goals last season.
That rumour came & went pretty quickly yesterday, no idea where it came from.
Rojo is deadwood already? So we wanted to get rid of some dead wood this season and were going to sign some more deadwood, wonderful

Are you for fecking real?
Jesus, this forum.
Are you saying he's above average and we don't need quality?Watch a lot of the Portuguese league?
Again, you're another expert on the Portuguese league are you?He will only make up the numbers in the squad if he's signed.
Yeah, it turns into an endless loop. Well, if it's not the defenders fault, is it the keeper? No, Mignolet is wonderful. Is it the midfield? No, best in the league. Is it the manager/tactics? No, Brendan is a genius.Playing Gerrard as their sole defensive cover and hoping for the best might have something to do with it. But try telling that to them. He can do no wrong in their eyes.
Are you saying he's above average and we don't need quality?
I'm going to answer your question with another since you've not focused on the main point of my comment which is that we need quality, proven quality at that.

... the thread title says done dealio.Hang on what makes you all think we're signing him?
Eh? You're the one claiming he's average, not me. Hence I'm asking you how mud you've seem to from this opinion ?Are you saying he's above average and we don't need quality?

Apparently he's deadwood already so we better hope it doesn't actually happen. Hold out for a sexier more expensive purchase. In January.Hang on what makes you all think we're signing him?

There is no "available right now" if the price is right mate.Which proven quality defenders are available right now?
