I remember Heinze being considered utter crap when he was at Sporting

Problem wasn´t Heinze per se. The problem was much broader. We were in turmoil and the quality of defense/defensive organization was very poor. Heinze always looked like a quality player to me and i liked him. Problem he came to our club at the wrong time. It was a shame.

He was a joke at Spartak Moscow for what I know. Though their defense is always ridiculous (Vidic aside), it's a tradition.

First year at Sporting, Rojo also looked out of depth and a liability. Then he started to turn things around and is an important player now. He was good for us last year bar the usual concentration lapses and disciplinary problems. Along William Carvalho, he was the backbone of our defensive stability. In the World Cup, he recieved big praise from Simeone. And that coming from one of the best managers in defensive terms shows his quality.

Yep, I was impressed by him at the WC as well. He strikes to me like one of these new breed of defenders - who has all the physical attributes but isn't up to it mentally/tactically, though when they're having their purple patch, they're almost perfect (Ramos, Luiz etc). When they are not, they're quite bad, almost tragically. Though he could've changed, of course, if you're telling that he is the consistent performer now - he was quite young at Spartak and also distracted by the big city life, understandable.

So how is everyone saying his name?

Ro-jo? Or similar to the way you pronounce the "J" in Jose?
The latter for me.

I might be wrong on this, but isn't there some weird third-party thing about his contract? I seem to remember Sporting fans ranting over how little they'd end up getting for him.

I don't know a lot about him. Looked talented enough at the world cup, but I've never seen him play for Sporting.

Seems like he's going to Southampton anyway and probably a good job too as the last player we snatched from Southampton's grasp was Buttner and we all know how well that turned out.

Looked pretty talented in the World Cup, but like people have pointed out already, he strikes me as a 100% nut-job. And I doubt he will ever improve mentally, because most of them nutters don't. Based on that, I doubt he can be considered a 'Louis van Gaal player' and it would be a pretty big risk. Would surprise me if we signed him.

Yep Sporting only have about 30% of his rights.

His performances in the WC were impressive enough I thought, a fiery and committed enough type of a player and a lad that you can be sure wouldn't go backwards under LvG if he was to come on board.

I really liked this lad in the WC. Kinda like Jones and David Luis - very talented but needs it to be honed. Would love him as he's versatile too

If you think he's more talented than Bernat who has the talent to play on the left wing, unlike Jordi Alba, then you're nuts

Eloquent.

Would be a good signing for wing back position, bring him in.

Didn't rate him when he was linked to Liverpool during the World Cup, I'm not going to change now on the chance that he ends up here, he's not good enough. If we want another left back to help ease Shaw into things then why didn't we go for Ricardo Rodriguez?

Rojo's surely an option for the LCB position, not LWB? Van Gaal wants a proper left-footer.

Has there bee anything to suggest any interest from United aside from the player following a few of our lads on Instagram?

20 millions euros offer from United rejected by our President according to "O Jogo".

Record also reporting it. Two out of three reporting it, so it must be to true

Good signing but they seriously rejected that? Punks!!

The days we were easy to deal with are long gone. Our President is a very good negotiator. The problem here is that we only have 30% of his rights. In my opinion you are going to sign Rojo. You will probably pay two or three million euros more and that´s it. We don´t want to keep an unhappy player but we also have to defend our interests.

So, about 23M Euro? Seems a good price in times of Vermaelen and David Luiz.

I liked him at the world-cup, but Demichelis and Mascherano were beasts too, so not sure how much that's worth.

@Sly You've probably already answered this, if so apologies...how was Rojo done during his time at Sporting? And do you think he can be a good buy for United?

Rojo only played as centerback for Sporting, 25 starts, didn't play at left at all.

He'd make a lot of sense. Young, talented, versatile, somewhat experienced. Go for it, Ed.

@Cina as i´ve said in a previous post, at Sporting he has been better as CB (was one of the best last year along with William Carvalho and was crucial in our defensive stability). When he plays in the Argentina setup, he plays better as LB (several Argentina managers have been playing him there)

@Nickosaur In the previous page, i gave my opinion. He is a talented player with very interesting caractheristics, important for a big club signing. He can play CB/LB with reasonable efficiency, is tall and very strong physically, not injury prone and young (24 years old). The cons, as i´ve also talked about in previous pages, are his concentration lapses and his poor disciplinary record. But like i´ve also said, he has been evolving year by year and last year i consider it a positive year. He needs a manager with a strong caracther and Van Gaal fits the bill. I´d divide Rojo´s time in two periods. Very bad in the first year and good and very encouraging last year (both Sporting and Argentina campaigns). I would consider him a good buy for United because i´m almost certain Van Gaal will have a positive impact in Rojo´s career.

@Johan77 he did play as LB in the beginning of his Sporting career but the results weren´t satisfactory. But i don´t know if it was a problem of our defensive organization since we were struggling in that year.

I thought he was a bit if a specialist LWB? Where would this leave Shaw? Looked good in the World Cup, going forward anyway.
