I don't know - but if Tor K Karlsen thinks he is a brilliant defender, that is good enough for me. He is a full-time scout who usually knows what he is talking about. He convinced me!
Exactly... Carlsen is pretty straight forward when evaluating players and his testimony on Rojo holds weight.

Sorry about derailing the Rojo discussion but how's Kondogbia getting on anyway? Another for that long list of names we absolutely, positively must buy one summer only for his name to never be repeated in any subsequent transfer windows?

I remember the feeling of depression that resulted from missing out on Lucas and Thiago or even the likes of Ozil (twice). Yet this summer, we could easily pursue Lucas yet have no desire to do so, Thiago has become a sicknote, and we're quite happy with Mata and Kagawa in the number 10 role instead of Ozil.

One transfer window's must-have is the next transfer window's ghost.

Hmm, seems to be a bit of a twat, doesn't he? He's fairly thrown the toys out of the pram if he's gone on strike. I mean I know it benefits us in this case but even still....
But he would be our twat. We need more cnuts to fight the dirty battles on the pitch. someone to get stuck in when a Pepe or costa puts in a ruthless challenge on an adnan or mata.

Anything north of 20m Euros is ridiculous for this guy. Hes not exactly world class.

Yep but we've left ourselves in a bad position for negotiation by leaving so much necessary business to the last few weeks of the window. If clubs know we're desperate...

Tbf, he believes the club treated him badly. They had agreed to sell him for €15m and went back on their word. Not saying I agree with it, but I find it hard to vilify him either. He believes his actions are justified.
I do see your point, I just dont like it.
If he came would he do the same here if the same situation arose?
I just think it is a shitty way to treat the club that pays your wages.

Neither Berbatov nor Evra were angels about how they left their old clubs. Plus if he thinks he has a €15m release clause then he's going to be angry with someone and you can bet his agent is trying to make sure Rojo doesn't blame him.

We don't really know the reason behind it though. Maybe the club DID promise to let him leave should a bid of 15m+ Euro comes in and now are refusing to do so... Clubs are known to act like that sometimes.

This kind of reminds me when Big Bad Berbs wanted to leave Spurs but once he came here, we saw none of that kind of nonsense...

Heinze and Tevez were our twats too, until they weren't. Hopefully Dirty Schwein is right though and we won't see that side of Rojo while he's here.

Still, if it makes signing him a bit easier....

Normally I'd agree about refusing to train, but this perverse third party ownership arrangement has made the player a prisoner to competing interests.

Going on strike is his only option, and even if the agreement requires the club to sell him or buy out the third party, the club can just stall the player's lawyers until the transfer window closes.

I think this third party ownership is responsible for creating the bad behavior which otherwise wouldn't be necessary.

At this rate, the players won't have to worry about that anytime soon except in friendlies.

RVP wasn't an angel either how he left Arsenal.

Looked pretty good in the Emirates Cup FWIW, but hasn't done too well at Monaco from what i've read and seen little bit.

He was always a young, bit raw talent though. Probably will have a real breakthrough in couple of years.

Dunno, why people thought he could come in straight away at this level. He showed glimpses of class but wasn't anything consistently good in La Liga either.

If Lovren can be considered as a good CB after only one good year in the prem, then Rojo can too.

Yep, no reason to think a first choice Argentina defender who made the World Cup team of the tournament would be better than a slightly older guy who can't get into the England team.

England.

He didnt get into the Argentina team at CB. 2 other players did

He's done well in Liga Sagres. So did Bebe

Smalling has been one of the better CBs in the premier league

I thought you had higher standarts than that Ekeke. Didn´t José Fonte had a better year than Smalling in the Premier League? He did. Plenty of portuguese pundits wanted him called up for the World Cup. Well the same José Fonte failed miserably at Paços de Ferreira and Estrela da Amadora. Things aren´t as linear. I don´t consider Smalling one of the best CBs in the Premier League. At least with what he has shown so far

That's mainly because he is the only decent LB in the country after him there is insua , Ansaldi etc... and they are weak players.

Maybe not, but Rojo was the pick of the bunch as they got to the World Cup final, letting in just one goal throughout 450 minutes of the knock-out stages, earning him a place alongside Silva and Hummels in the Castrol Index team of the tournament.

I'm satisfied he's a decent defender, and an upgrade on any of the all-time internationally renowned legends that are Smalling, Evans and Jones.

Ffs.

Rojo played at WB because he has the pace unlike Garay and Demechelis.

No.

Fonte played okay in a well organised team with Lovren standing out and being protected by Schneiderlin

Smalling played well as a CB in the middle of a shitstorm of disorganisation

Yes. Fonte did play better than Smalling. Doesn´t matter the circunstancies. I´m talking performance wise. I´d agree that Smalling has the potencial to become one of the best CB´s in the prem but he isn´t at the moment

Ansaldi did fine for Rubin Kazan, including beating Barcelona at their prime

Well, that doesn't change the fact that most of the time he is shit. And even if you consider him as decent, a CB plays instead of him in his National team.

He really didnt.

He really didnt.

A matter of opinion and although i respect your opinion (as you have seen in our previous exchanges) but i don´t take it as gospel. Fonte did very well and is underrated.

Sure did. And CBs including ones oft critisized on here were selected instead of Rojo at CB

I'm hoping he's good and proves to be perfect for the left of a back 3, but the severe underrating of Smalling continues. His out and out defensive work was bettered by few in the league last season.

Arsenal had one of the best 2 CB pairings last season and Wenger was adament he wanted Smalling in exchange for Vermaelen for a reason. Apparently he might as well have sold us Vermaelen and bought Jose Fonte for £2 million instead

Even if they had a better left back Rojo wouldn't have started in place of either of them.
Garay and Demichelis are more experienced than Rojo as CB's so i'm not gonna argue on that point.

As @Sly pointed out before in his assessment of Rojo about his lapses in concentration, and also others have said he has positional issues. These are issues that Van Gaal will iron out because he's a master of improving players in a positional sense. If our coach was still Moyes i'd be worried but with Van Gaal i'm confident Rojo will be a success with us because he has all the attributes required to be a top CB.

Demichelis wasn't a starter going into the WC, Fernandez was. He was a bit shit, so Demichelis came into the side during the tournament. I'd imagine if they had a proper left back Rojo would be Garay's partner, and indeed will be long term.

Don't get the Smalling hate. Whenever he's played CB for us he's been excellent. I can understand outsiders not understanding how good he is but United supporters should have seen enough of his games a CB to know better. If Rojo is anywhere near as good as him he'd be a terrific signing imo.

Just a little bit over the top, mate. He's not Cannavaro.
