Marcos Rojo | Manchester United Player Pending Medical

Just so I understand correctly... the reason we're signing the underwhelming / disappointing first choice Argentina defender, fresh from the final of the world cup, in which he was named in the team of the tournament, is because he will only be back-up to Evans, Jones and Smalling?

I love those three as much as anybody, but people need to get a grip - this is a very high level player we're buying here. He's between Jones and Smalling in age, but has more caps for Argentina than both of those two have for England put together... he's got nearly as many caps as Evans has for Northern Ireland, in fact.

[MUPPET]He's not Hummels or Benatia ergo he's gash[/MUPPET]

So i´ve watched our President´s interview and he said that Rojo has a contract and that we aren´t pressured by funds or other interests. Because of Rojo´s unprofessional behaviour in the last two days he will be subjected to a disciplinary procedure (not relegated to the B team like some media outlets said). He also said that Sporting is willing to discuss transfers but in the appropriate terms and not by media, agent or fund pressure. Interest of the club above all. That´s it.
Thanks man, v interesting

How good is Rojo compared to say Benatia? I honestly haven't seen much of him.

If none of them changes clubs - noone cares
If Rojo goes to United and Benatia stays - slightly better
If Rojo goes to United and Benatia to City - a lot better
If Rojo stays and Benatia goes to City - a lot worse
If Rojo stas and Benatia goes to another club than City - noone cares again

A few conflicting reports here. Some posters are saying he's good/better than Benatia and others are saying he's tut and a potentially underwhelming signing. I have only seen him play at the World Cup so I haven't really seen enough to form an opinion.

I'm willing to guess the majority here have only seen him play a handful of times at the World Cup, so most opinions here aren't exactly ironed out.

In no Universe is he currently better than Benatia. He needs to be signed asap with Evans/Shaw and Valencia all picking up injuries.

 This! Absolutely This!

I'm never too bothered about people on here's opinions from having watched players... 90% of it is bravado from people who probably haven't seen as much as they claim and definitely aren't as good at judging players as they claim they are.

Ignoring the odd inexplicable freak like David Luiz, I'm generally happy to base my opinion on things like whether a player is regularly called up for a top international team and whether a manager of LVG's quality is keen to spend good money on bringing him in.

Sportings president is furious with him. LOVE IT!!!

Shows that he wants to come here badly....I think...

This guy was a scout for a European team, if i'm not mistaken?
Yeah he's worked at numerous places, most recently Monaco. Think he's freelance now and writes occasionally for the Guardian.

Well City paid feck loads for Mangala from Porto who came behind Sporting in the league and Sporting conceded less goals.

He's no where near that level.

El Presidente has gone proper crazy. Won't be training with the D team apparently, and saying Sporting won't be helping out agents. Full on Bilbao tactics.

Who do guys think he will be replacing from our current back three, provided he plays there and not LWB since we already have Shaw. I think it's probably going to be Evans. Not just because Rojo is going to take the left centre back position from him, Evans can play centrally or on the right instead of Smalling and Jones. I just prefer Jones and Smalling to Evans.

I think initially he'll have to play his way into the defence, he'll begin behind Smalling, Jones and Evans.

Is his name pronounced Rock-O, yeah? I really hope it is.

To be honest, I have no idea. With him being South American I would imagine so.

They pronounced it 'Roho' on SSN earlier but they don't know their arse from their elbow.

Initially yeah, but can see him having the edge because of LVG preferring a left footer simply to play on the left.

Yeah I've heard both Ro-Ho and Rock-O pronunciations.

We sure know how to pick teams to negotiate with: Sporting, Bilbao, Dortmund, Roma (maybe), Spurs (in the past)...

Heard it pronounced earlier like Ro-cho (with an Irish "ch" sound). I'm gonna go with that until I hear it said properly.

Argentines have a 'ch' in their Spanish but I've never heard 'rojo' pronounced like that. It should be roho and since it means 'red' it seems his move to United is destined.

Wrong. Garay globally was a 6 million deal. Benfica recieved 2,4 million euros for their share of Garay. Benfica fans were/still are extremely upset with this deal. This is the communication for the stock exchange:

You can clearly see the value in the last paragraph, it´s 2.4 millions.

Seems you are right, apologies as I was under impression he was sold for £12m by an incorrect article from the daily mail.

In fairness no player we should be attempting to sign should be an easy purchase. Clubs should want to hold onto players we're interested in.

It just seems lately they're either the types of clubs who say pay the (usually) inflated release clause or bugger off which is the first half of the clubs listed. Or they're financially stable with their eyes on trophies...

Where's anyone said he's better than Benatia?

He's no where near that level.

If he was anywhere near as good as Benatia or Hummels we'd have had a thread on him before Friday.

Personally I didn't hear a single thing from any of us saying we should go for him before now, in fact he was ridiculed on here when Liverpool were linked during the World Cup.

Hoping this getting messy doesn't make their President start being difficult. Heard he can be a ball breaker.

I think he is a decent player my main thing is, I just want an Argentinian in the side, something about them, especially defenders. I know Heinze and Tevez left in shit circumstances but they are players that will die for you out on the pitch.
